This Bodhran lesson teaches you the technique needed for playing reels in Irish music sessions from Irish bodhrán maestro Jim Higgins. Start with this funky reel rhythm here then visit the Online Academy of Irish Music's website for a free mp3 of this rhythm and notation of the drum pattern and more info on how to speed up your learning - www.oaim.ie/bo...
Course Synopsis: In this course 'Intermediate Bodhran Technique', maestro percussionist Jim Higgins presents a range of rhythmical accompaniments to cover a variety of tune types - Reels, Jigs, Slipjigs, Slides, Polkas and Hornpipes. Over the course of the13 tutorials, Jim discusses and demonstrates many techniques that the learner Bodhran player can add to his palette of techniques - rolls, backhand motion, the use of syncopation, the 'Bo Diddley Beat', and rim techniques to name but a few. As a drummer, he frequently discusses how to apply what can be done on a drum kit to the Bodhran. The video tutorials are in a split-screen format, so the learner can view the backhand as well as the forehand at all times. Jim Higgins, who hails from Renmore, Galway has been a member of 'The Stunning' and 'The Saw Doctors'. He spent four years touring with 'River Dance' and is a member of 'The Mairtín O'Connor Band' and also of Donegal band Altan. He has also played with Lunasá, Paul Brady and Christy Moore.

Jim plays along with a recording of whistle and flute duo Breda and Cora Smyth 'The Sun Street Shuffle'.

I am an American learning how to play the bodhran. Nothing too complicated yet, but this sounds great. It also sounds like I could have some rapping to it.

Are you using the top of the stick for the roll, or is it all done with the bottom?

Amazing tuition. Unfortunately the volume albeit turned up to full extent, is still too difficult to hear up until 7 minutes in. Otherwise Jimmy, congratulations for a great you tube.

Hi Jerald, Glad you liked the lesson. Here are some places to start looking for a beginner bodhrán - Waltons, Michael Vignoles & Irish Gift Shops. Let us know how you get along, and which drum you buy :)

Hi Dara, It's a Brendan White Drum. Are you looking for a quality bodhrán? I have a Ben March for sale if that interests you?
@HinnerkRue
@HinnerkRue 5 лет назад
That's one of a kind, the "Black Compressor" by Christian Hedwitschak. This drum was an experiment that led to the the development of the "compressor tuning rim". It reduces "unwanted" overtones (as the black tape does) and is now standard for Christian's high end bodhráns. Jim Higgins bought the "Black Compressor" some years ago at the Craiceann Bodhrán Festival on Inis Oirr, Ireland.

Hi Jimmy and thanks for the lesson. I want to see if I'm tracking your rhythm correctly. I get the DD DUDU UDD but as you move along its DD DUDU UDD du (repeat), It seems that the 'du' at the end is a bit softer and transitional, setting up the first DD. Am I hearing/seeing you correctly? One quick side comment: the audio quality (even with my eternal speakers) seem low for your voice in most of the video except for a short stretch Thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback! Follow what Jimmy does with your ear and you'll have that beat in no time.
