If you're a fan of old vine wines, you're about to find a wine (and a region) that's worth knowing about for great quality and value. Let’s blind an American wine region and one of its most nostalgic grapes.
What are we tasting?
This is the 2016 EASTON Amador County Zinfandel
Amador County is in the Sierra Foothills which is East of Napa and Sonoma. It's a region that has a long history in California wine, starting just after the close of the gold rush in the late 1800s.
The grape is Zinfandel, it's one of America's favorite grapes before Prohibition. Amador County is actually home to many old vineyards planted with Italian-inspired grapes (actually, Zin is technically Croatian... but that's another story for another time) like Barbera (a juicy red) and Vermentino (a green herbal white).

Got this one. The high alcohol was the best clue. Don’t drink these as much, but I might if I could find a higher elevation one with good acidity like Easton! 🍷

I've really gone off supermarket red wines and I don't drink whites... I really need to step-up my game and go to a wine specialist, with a minimum spend of £35 a bottle. What do you think?

I think you can do great for around £16-£20 - for great quality red wines. Maybe not the most famous crus and producers, but there are so many underrated great producers out there. :)

I went to a wine specialist in Manchester UK. Spent £35 for VERGELEGEN CABERNET SAUVIGNON SOUTH AFRICA 2005. They over charged me, It retails for about £26. The colour was a light red, I like my wine dark red. Was no aroma apart from alcohol. It was thin like water and tasted like water. That’s it, I’m done with wine. Sorry ❤️.

What a pity to give up.. try drinking merlot.. it's the forgiving wine..the wine you can offer guests whether they like wine or not and won't be offended.. here's to you picking up where you dropped off..buy wines from inside a store away from windows..sunlight can destroy the flavour..😌👌

Got it wrong.... i chose cabernet...but interesting enough..if I am not mistaken then this grape variety came from Croatian old vines a long long time ago.
