They say don’t start chest compressions if you are alone because it is very physically taxing. Its better with two people, so you can swap over every minute or so. After 2 minutes of proper good compressions, you will be tired and that will affect the effectiveness of the coming compressions & ineffective compressions are futile. But I do agree. I’m an RN & I would always start compressions if a person is not breathing, even if I’m alone. Like, just imagining if it was my mum, I’m not following the guidelines and I would do compressions until my arm falls off 😂

Yes... but if the heart is beating again, you may continue to provide them with oxygen (as you've been doing b4)... someone's heart can be beating but there might still be too little oxygen in their blood...

okay but won't the victim run out of oxygen? also what if there are multiple people present, can one of them breathe into the mouth while the other one continues with the pumps?

Understandable but you see the case at hand right? Imagine being in a forrest or other remote area. Once you start compressions, you should not stop until professional help is on site. This can result in you, being all alone with no one to call help to, doing compressions for hours. I don't know about you but even trained paramedic's can't do that for much longer then 30min In A Proper manner. Most civilians can't do it for longer then 8 minutes. It is incredibly exhausting and straining on the body and being able to do it properly for longer then 8 minutes is almost not do able for most people so then what? After those 8 minutes if you have no cellphone and no other person to hear your call's around? You can't do anything for the person anyway and are putting yourself at risk for god knows what, even a heart attack yourself due to the intensity on your own body. That is what they mean to tell you here. Ofcourse you need to get someone as fast as possible, everyone knows that. And in a crowded place you can ofcourse start right away and ask for help when someone passes by, but you should never do that on your own in a remote place.

This is one situation where Dr. Mike's advice won't help. If you're alone, you can't just do chest compressions. First you call 911. Then, if you are alone, and know for a fact that there is an AED nearby, quickly get it and use it as instructed. Then, in between the shocks and AED monitoring whether it needs to administer said shock, is when you do chest compressions. This only applies to if you are alone and you know there is an AED nearby. No matter how strong you are, most people can't do chest compressions for upwards of 20 minutes while waiting for an ambulance. They are very strenuous

@@andylenz6246 Like I said; NO ONE can do cpr for hours. Even half an hour is extensive for 1 person to do compressions for and do them well. If there is, Like the situation at hand I explained, No way to call for help; There is also no way to help that person by only doing cpr since you will come to a point where you have to stop simply out of your own body's exhaustion. Come on man, it's literally worst case scenario I described. It will almost never happen. Chances of getting a heart attack all alone in the forest with no one to even do cpr and die on the spot for lack of help is 10 times more likely then someone finding that heart attack patient and not being able to call for help. It's a fact; CPR is HARD. It's Exhausting. No one can do it well for a long amount of time. And again; Worst case scenario that will almost never happen. So don't come at me with "obviously not paramedic, you have to do cpr right away no matter what" ... No. Not in the case I described. That way, one can easily compromise their own health -like I said.. I literally said it all in the comment but ok - and what is number 1 rule of giving help? (even after calling 911, since that's not even a rule but a known fact , I'd say 'lol' if it wasn't this serious) Repeat after me; Always make sure your own safety is not compromised. And just so you know, I have a close friend who once at a saturday afternoon was the last person to leave the footy field and he found a man on the floor having a heart attack. His cellphone was in his car. Instead of getting it, he did what you said; Started cpr right away with no one or no way to call for help. No ambulances, no assistances, nothing. Just him and the guy far to heavy for him to lift (eventhough my friend can easily pick me up with my 75kilo's) doing cpr on a freaking footy club. You know how long it took before someone came close enough for them to hear his yell's? 46minutes. And this is a top fit young bloke. He was exhausted. Took him 2 full weeks to recover from that 'excersize' and what did they tell him? It was good that his own health was thát good, otherwise -and for most- that kind of effort can compromise their own health in a just as dangerous way as the person he was trying to help was in. They told him to next time, go and get his phone first. They being.. the paramedic's... in case that wasn't clear. But for those in the back, let's repeat it one more time (since YOU are obviously not even trained in any way on this subject) ; The number 1 rule of giving help; Out loud this time; "Always make sure your own safety is not compromised".

Ya don’t need rescue breaths. Chest compressions are fine on their own. I’m not a professional but doctor mike is, check his RU-vid channel!

Rescue breaths aren't mandatory, but if you can you should. But chest compressions are #1 priority.

@@ByT1mothy Good to know! I always learned in courses you needed to do compressions switched off with breaths. Good to know you can fully focus on compressions the first 10/15min (to be safe I guess from 10 to 20min) without hurting to much. I mean with Covid19 around... I have this little package called LIPS that you can use if ever needed to place on a person's mouth to sort of give breath to them "clean" instead of straight mouth to mouth, but in these times it's extra good to know you can get by for a while with compressions only. I was actually trying to say that checking for a pulse likely isn't necessary if you aren't breathing, because if you aren't breathing you would be dying or dead.

An AED is very important to know how to use. If you have an AED close you should know how to use it.

Um you do know lots of supermarkets have them? This is a UK video so I suspect it's same in more European countries, if not I'm sorry but in my country LOTS of AED's are in regular access places; Like supermarkets! We have them all around, even on or in people's houses. And everyone who lists themselves as helpers will get a call when a cardiac arrest is happening nearby your house and when you respond to it that you will go there, you'll get send the code to open the AED locked box right away. So yes dude you should go get one in the nearest supermarket or where ever.

Only if you are trained to do rescue breaths if not do compressions

If someone had a cardiac related emergency (ie heart attack or stroke) then rescue breaths are not necessary.

Not if you are in a remote place. Which is what they show here. If there are people around that's fine yes but if you are all alone and no one near you that can hear your calls, you should never start compressions on your own. You will wear out, risk of fainting and risk getting a heart attack yourself even if you start it alone. Most untrained people will not be able to do compressions for longer then 8 minutes, did you know? Even professionals or maybe athletes can max do it for 30min. And then what? You can only help someone else properly if you are safe yourself. And doing compressions all alone with no one in calling distance is not safe.
