Learn French Fast! Meet my French professor and hear about a plan that we've devised to achieve French fluency in a matter of months :) I know how hard it can be learning French as an adult and although everyone has their learning French story, I think mine could be one of the messiest!
As I prepare to sit my DELF B2 exam in July this year, it's time to get serious!! I want to go from intermediate French to fluent and ACE my exam! I know people are always looking for quick tricks and hacks when it comes to how to become fluent in French. I'm not gonna lie - this French Fluency action plan takes some work! But the concept is really about weaving French into your every day life in a range of engaging formats.

More ideas to integrate French into your everyday life for folks living outside of France: A. Change the language of your social media account(s) to French B. Change the language of your smartphone and tablet to French C. Change the language of your laptop or desktop computer to French. Also, don't forget to use a French keyboard if possible. D. If you use modern day washing machine, clothes dryer, and/or dishwasher, change their language settings to French E. If you drive a modern day car with infotainment system, GPS SAT-NAV, Heads-Up Display, etc... change the language setting of the car to French. Don't forgot to switch it back to English before bringing it back to the dealership for scheduled maintenance service as the technician(s) at the workshop may get confused and misdiagnose the car.

Good advice, except for the keyboard I would say. At least I wouldn't recommend it if you're used to typing with ten fingers. I'm Dutch (where we use QWERTY) and all the times I've ever tried to use a computer in Belgium (where they use AZERTY) I've only been able to type complete gibberish. :D

As a French man, I can confirm this method also worked for me the other way around when I was a kid. I started learning English around 7-8 by listening to training tapes. It came with a book where you had to click the answers as the tape was talking about certain topics. It gave me an edge very early, and as other kids were barely starting to understand how to say their names and locate a cat in a house, I was already able to form full sentences describing a scene. In the following years that knowledge kept increasing faster and faster, to the point I wasn't learning anything new in class because I was already watching movies in English with subs at that point. One thing that is very valuable in learning from movies (and video games too, don't forget them!), is the ability to learn phrases and get used to accents. That's something you'll probably never learn in French classes, yet is very useful on a daily basis. And trust me, some accents in France are going to put your skills to the test! :D

5BX Official Channel you can play the same games but switch the settings around or if your into online games and have good internet you can go into French/euro servers to talk to more French speakers online

@5BX Official Channel Sorry for the late answer, I didn't get a notification until just now... I'd check for games made by French developers, chances are playing these games with French audio and subtitles will let you learn a few things that you won't find in academic books. Notorious companies like Ubisoft, Focus Home or Quantic Dream have story-driven games in their catalog, but I'm pretty sure any game (even from indie studios like Motion Twins) would help as long as you're able to switch audio to French and have subtitles enabled.

I was born in a French speaking country but then my Mum brought me to the UK and I had to speak English so I resent that in a way and I want to reacquire what I should know. Ideally I would like to know a native speaker who could help but I don’t know how feasible that’d be, what would you suggest? Any tips/advice would be really appreciated and helpful, thanks.

@@stevenrobinson7722 Have you ever heard of Urbeez? It's basically a website where you can join/create events based on your interests, allowing you to meet people sharing that interest with you. I don't know if that website is much of a thing in the UK, but for all I know, I've been using Urbeez every time I had to move to a new city. Among all the events available, sometimes you will find events to improve your level in another language (whether around drinks, board games, or even picnics in summer). If you're not quite ready for that though (understandable with spoken French, knowning how difficult it can be), maybe starting with mobile apps like Babbel or Duolingo will help. Last but not least, I would look for private schools where French is the main language (again, not sure it exists in the UK but we have the equivalent with English as the main language here): maybe they'll have some contacts or can at least help you find a private teacher if you're that serious about it. I'm also pretty sure you can meet French people anywhere in the UK, if not at work. We're basically neighbors after all! :)

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but the RU-vid channel SARA’H is by a French singer who translates famous English-speaking songs into French so that they rhyme and everything. Her voice is beautiful, and her channel has helped me learn SO MUCH! One of the best parts is that she puts the French lyrics on-screen too, so you don’t have to put the RU-vid subtitles on (those are SCARILY inaccurate)! On a related note, I can now sing ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU in French, and I’m working on MY HEART WILL GO ON 😂😂

This video literally changed my life! I come back and watch it every once in a while. Your tips are really simple and straightforward, but they never really crossed my mind before this video. I created a French routine, only 10 hours a week, but I couldn't stick to it. For months I tried to adjust it and find something I could stick to but it didn't work! I took a break, watched the video again, and then I did it! A super simple and easy routine that I can actually stick to, using resources I love! Now, I study ~20 hours a week! (I'm on vacation, I'll reduce the number of hours when school comes around). I hope to keep implementing such a routine in the future, and learn French the right way, and possibly even other languages! I don't know why I didn't subscribe before, but I did now! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! 💖💖💖💖

Aussie here. I studied French in high school and was conversational ... and then didn't use it, so it pretty much lapsed. Now as an adult working in travel, I've done "refresher" courses to try and bring it back. It does work ... somewhat. It seems I remember more than I actually think I do, and a recent trip to Nouvelle Caledonie showed me that I remember more vocabulary than I thought I did (I was able to understand pretty much everything I saw written, eg: signs, advertising, etc). In a fit of crazy last year, I launched into learning Italian, which is going well. A few things I've learned from that is: 1. Immersion helps immensely. Listen to songs with lyrics in the language you're learning, watch tv (especially children's programmes) or movies, or even watch the news. Movies you know in English, watch them in the language you're learning. You already know the story, so you can focus on what they're saying and more importantly, HOW they're saying it. Which brings me to ... 2. The things that helped me the most in accelerating my learning - pronunciation and vocabulary. Once you have the pronunciation down, you're more than halfway there. In order to learn the pronunciation, you learn words. 2000 words is high level conversational. 3. To avoid doing the whole "translating in my head", don't do the chien = dog method. If you're doing flash cards or word lists, use a picture. Find a picture of a dog and label it chien. When you bypass the translation, it becomes automatic so much faster.

I use Babbel. Yes I am paying for it, but it is only 90 AUD for the full year. I've been using it since February this year and I absolutely love using it, I am learning quickly and, unexpectedly, my two year old son has started learning and he is actually communicating more in broken Franglish as well. His first clearly comprehensible sentence was in French. (Qu'est-ce que tu fais dans la vie) he was parroting me when he said it.

Hi! if your french lessons in university looks like our english lessons in france I can understand that you are far from fluent level. when I got away from school, my english level was not bad (B-)regarding the test i sat, in an Irish english school. First I spent 2 mounth in Ireland to reach B+ and I finnaly worked for an ammerican company in germany. that was the boost up I was waiting. more important than learning is to communicate with other people. I learned more in one year in germany than my 8 or 10 years of english lessons during school. french grammar is hard we know it, but when you understand the keys (some exception exist) it become automatics.

Guillaume MEFFRE yes definitely going to hone my grammar skills so that I know it instinctively! And then the other step is definitely to overcome the fear of being wrong and to try and speak the language!

It actually helped me so much, about a year ago I changed schools and all the students there had a much higher niveau and much more knowledge and answered the questions of the teachers in whole sentences. Honestly it shocked me so much and I was so afraid to take this class cause everyone was so advanced. But this video ( and some of the comments ) helped me a lot and I feel much more confident. Thank you :)

Hahaha!! "Speak to French boyfriend" ...I missed the instructions on how to get one ;) Although, when I was new in France and didn't know anyone I just used tinder to speak to people in French :) Also when watching stuff in French, I always watch with the French subtitles on, otherwise I struggle to pick out and learn new words.

Very good tips, this helps a lot, merci! I’m just at the end of A2 and I’ve been trying to find ways to expose myself more with the french language and now I’m glad I won’t only be stuck with watching series and movies. And I totally agree with you, learning with a French teacher is definitely a must-they do monitor your progress and you can expect to at least learn french the right way starting from the basics. I’ll definitely start with a “french routine” per week starting today.😊

Hi Rosie!!!! Very good Video as usually! nowaday concerns is people relationship about foreign language! from my personnal experience people don't like critics from an other person! Critics are howover essential to improve yourself! More you fail more you improve it's mathematical. each time I try to correct someone about a french misstake I feel bad about that and I never know if the person front to me is receptive or negative about that! Critics can only come from a teacher or a professor for people, it's a pity !! IMO everybody can become a teacher of a day and permit to succeed together. So continue, stay as you are. Salut !!!

Hi Rosie! another interesting way to learn french if you have recently moved to France, is for example attending to free F.L.E courses at places like intercultural associations, or even public libraries, where you can look up for excercises on those grammar books too. That courses might not be very academic, but I´ve found that they helped me a lot to start speaking in french, and it's also an awesome way to meet people from all over the world. Thank you for all your reccomendations! I´ll check them out About movies, one of them easy to understand (for adults) is "I am not an easy man", it's a satire/comic film about feminism stereotypes/changing roles. Interesting to improve vocabulary skills

This was extremely helpful I have a very important exam in 2 years(so I have plenty of time) this exam is extremely important to me as I need atleast 80% in my French exam as I want to study Veterinary Medicine , I’ve been learning french for 2 years but never focused on it because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it for this important exam but now I have committed !!!!

I'm in the early stages, I've been on Duolingo for almost one month now daily, Memrise and I listen to a lot of music. I practice saying syllables, words and small phrases. My pronunciation is still far off but I can see a little improvement. At the moment I say things quite slow and I kind of stop to try and pronounce certain words correctly. It's kind of discouraging but I'm still in the early stages and I won't give up lol

I did 12 years of French in school, plus another maybe 140 h of French individual lessons during the years. At the end my level was A2 with no chance of increasing. When I started to actually speak, it was a breakthrough for me. It was like someone opened my brain for some light to enter. Even though I’ve been living in France for more than one year, I couldn’t speak with the natives in the beginning because of fear of making mistakes. So I started with skype conversations with natives. There is this site, italki.com which I think is great! You can book lessons with natives and the prices are quite good (for instance I pay between 8 and 11 euros per hour). So I invested each month about 120 euros meaning around 11-12 h of French. It’s been 4 months already and I already have a B1 level (I also started to write and read in French). I don’t think someone can become fluent in 3 months, maybe fluent for a job interview with some standard vocabulary but not in general. It takes at least 2 years of heavy practice, speaking, reading, exercises to have a B2…

Enhance yourself through learning, hobbies, fixing any attachment style issues, learn how to communicate superbly, improve your emotional intelligence. All these things make you more well rounded, less desperate, happier, balanced...and able to ascertain good relationships with anyone, based on you being secure and knowing your worth. Learning French is one of the hardest things my brain can comprehend the difference between masculine and feminine words, different words can mean the same thing, getting down the accent. It’s going to be the death of me

i have a question. how do you start picking it up? i’m english so french just sounds like gibberish to me but i think it’s such a beautiful and romantic language and i want to learn it. i am so down to put time into this but i just don’t know how i am suppose to pick something up whenever i am listening or watching a video if i do not understand?

I know that this is two years later, but someone esle could be helped by this answer. Your brain will automatically start seeing patterns and you will start to distinguish between words and understand what they mean from context only. I learnt German as a child this way and it's basically how babies start to learn their first language/s as well. If you try to find a source for basic french grammar and a frequency word list to study, this will make the progress faster. Watching a childrens show, maybe one you used to like as a child would be a good start because the vocab is slightly easier, but you could probably go cold turkey and watch a show for adults or youtube videos about a subject you are interested in if you have the patience for that. For tv shows you can turn on subs either french or english, just make sure to listen.

I grew up being a bit familiar with French since it's my country's secondary language but i went to the U.S before I even got the chance to learn french at school, so it was really hard for me when I came back to my birth country and had to keep my English fluent whilst I learned French at school And my country's language at home and elsewhere. Thru out the years I haven't had much luck with landing on a half descent French teacher, and even when I did, our school system wasn't built to teach you how to be a fluent french speaker but rather a repertoire for random words. I've tried to practice my French with my bsf who is originally from France but he's very stubborn and says he also has to learn our country's native tongue so I haven't had much luck with him either, that's why I'm taking a last resort in hopes of finally sealing the gigantic hole in my french created by our education system!

I have been learning French for three months now. I think easiest way to learn French is to write down all the words that we use daily and learn how to use them in present, past, and future. However, as it is mentioned in this video, practicing is very important.

TuneIn radio is a another great asset to improve listening comprehension and learn new expressions. There are numerous French language stations covering just about every format from news to comedy to music, including FranceInfo, FranceInter and RFI Monde, to name just a few. I stream these stations in my car as I drive around for work during the day. In 18 months, I’ve gone from understanding 25% to nearly 100% of what is said. Just to expand on what you said about Netflix, nearly every Netflix original series is available in French, regardless of the original language. I’ve watched American series in French such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and many others, as well as French series, Scandinavian series, etc. There’s so much choice that I find myself watching almost no television in English anymore. For speaking, I bought into the concept that you simply have to speak regularly in order to improve. I started with teachers I found through the site italki and met several correspondents on francaisfacile.com that I speak with via Skype. They have become good friends and I even met some of them during a recent trip to France.
