What you need to do to be my intro:
Record yourself saying the following things:
"Hallo Leute! Ich bin ___ (You can say whatever you want here - name, (youtube) nickname, where you live, where you're from, why you're learning German, or anything else you'd like, one or more things. It's best if you do this part in German, too, but if you're too shy, English is fine as well - just try to keep the video to roughly 10 seconds or shorter) und ihr seht Deutsch Für Euch!"
Please don't edit your videos; if you'd like something changed (e.g. color correction), let me know in your email. I'll make sure to make you look as good as possible anyway, though ;)
I can use a lot of video formats, but your safest bets are the usual candidates: .avi, .mov, .mp4 - DON'T use .dv, please.
Once you're happy with your video, send it to me via ONE of these channels:
attach the video to an email to dfekontakt@gmail.com
send me a DropBox link/invite me to a folder (also dfekontakt@gmail.com)
send me a link to a the video on RU-vid, also via mail
please title your message "DFE Intro"
There's NO time limit for this, this will be an on-going thing as long as you send me videos.
I'm looking forward to your submissions - feel free to get creative with it! :)

I dont know if any of your other viewers use this, but I use an application called Duolingo, I've found it to be very helpful and it's a great way to apply the rules that I've learned from your lessons, as well as learning some vocabulary at the same time. It's not as good as having the oppertunity to have a German friend but I'd recommend at least having a look at it. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work. ;)

Hey Katja! I love your vids of course, and just wanted to add a little "tip", because im doing an intensive course and learned some stuff that you can also add or explain. For example: why when we have indefinite article we need to add ER or ES to the adjective for Masc and Neutrum nouns? Because that way, you can know the "gender" of the noun! When you have definite article (Der or Das) you already know the "gender" so you add only "E" to the adjective. But "EIN Hund" or "EIN Pferd" - you dont know it unless you have "ER" or "ES" in the adjective. Thats my trick to "remember" or to understand the reason for this rule :) Hope this helps!

When we were learning German in school, the way we learned this was as follows -- and I don't know that it's the best way, but it does stick with me: 1) Learn nominative case endings. Note that masculine and neuter are similar though not identical. Once you've mastered that ... 2) Learn accusative case endings. They're the same as nominative case except for masculine singular. Easy! By now you've mastered half the possibilities, and coincidentally the most common ones. 3) Then on to dative case. Dative plays by its own rules, but notice that masculine and neuter are identical. 4) Finally, on to genitive case. Again, it has its own rules, but masculine and neuter are identical.

For the adjectives, there are many grammar books. I like the Schaum's Outline Notes German Grammar. Interesting table you have. When I studied German(Goethe Institut), the exercise book would display the cases in the following order: 1. Nominative 2. Akkusative 3. Dative 4. Genitive.

@Sarikalol
@Sarikalol 9 лет назад
I thought you were cute when in the end you were sorta justifying declensions by the ability to omit the noun and the word "one", but in my language (portuguese) we don't have anything like declensions, and we still can say "the black" in response to "which one do you prefer"
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 9 лет назад
Portuguese, a Romance language, doesn't decline? Impossiburu :D No seriously, you just blew my mind a little.
@Sarikalol
@Sarikalol 9 лет назад
well. I'm not a grammar expert :P I mean we do have a few different articles for I guess nominative and accusative and genitive? I believe that's it. and even then, if we go back a few hundred years, the articles in themselves are always the same. "a" or "o" for feminine definitive and masculine definitive. but then prepositions come to play and we sorta mixed them with the articles. say , this is the horse. este é "o" cavalo. I feed the horse. eu dou de comer "ao" cavalo, where "ao" is a contraction of "a" and "o", "a" meaning "to". so "to the", "a o", becomes "ao". this is the horse's food. esta é a comida "do" cavalo. again, contraction of "de" and "o". becomes "do". where "de" means "of", so "of the" becomes "de o" which became "do". o, ao, do feminine: a , à, da. yay! but in terms of adjectives (or nouns), there's no declensions at all. adjectives change according to gender (masc or fem) and number. so we can say this horse is black, my horse is black, I killed a black horse, or I prefer the black [one], and the word for black is always the same. and in the last case we don't need the "one" as I said. it's really not needed because in context you would understand what im talking about . like we have a line of horses and you ask me which one I prefer and I say "the black", you're not gonna ask me "the black what?" :P
@gabig3794
@gabig3794 9 лет назад
Dear Katja, thanx for the lectures, for a beginner like me they are extremely helpful; also to let you know, the only Latin language still preserving the declensions is ROMANIAN, which still has 5 cases; while the others French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese have evolved a bit more and gave up on the declensions, making use of prepositions rather than endings.
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 9 лет назад
You're right, I noticed that a few days later, too :D My brain made a pretty big lapse there. But I got a little Portuguese lesson out of it! :D
@hildervitor
@hildervitor 7 лет назад
Gabi is right. Maybe the only declensions we have in Portuguese (Italian, French, Spanish...) occurs with the pronouns: Eu --> means "Ich" me --> accusative mim --> dative in French: je, me, moi... and the only word I remember now that is used to explicitly show the genitive case in Portuguese is "cujo". It works like "whose" in English. "A bola *cujo* preço é 50 euros" --> (translating word per word) --> "The ball whose price is 50 euros".

Finally trying to learn this table, excellent explanations, Katja! I saw a little difference between the video and the downloadable file though, it's in the Plural indef column, Männlich row, Dative case. The video says "schwarz-en Hund-en", but on the file I downloaded I see "schwarz-en Hund-e". Which is the right one? Not sure if this might help others but from your own tips and inspecting the table in detail I came up with the following "algorithm" (I'm a computer guy you might guess) with only four subcases to learn, the 4th being a little table itself: If Plural and Def, then 1) -en else If Plural and Indef, then 2) -e -er -en -e else If Gen or Dat, then 3) -en else 4) the following little table: Nom. Def : -e -e -e (M, F, N genders) Nom. Indef: -er -e -es Akk. Def : -en -e -e Akk. Indef: -en -e -es 1 and 2 cover the entire plural half of the big table; 3 and 4 cover the singular half, where there is some more variation and trouble to learn :)
@DeutschFuerEuch

I'm not sure where to post my question(s) but I always seem to get lost in the grasping of separating German sentences the same way an English sentence would be... i.e. a subject a verb or an adjective and then finishing the statement. Somewhere in how I've learned German I get lost between the first few words and then the (reflexive?? is it called??) verb... Wir haben(?) zu dem Zug gefahrt? The tenses / context / timeline I am perhaps being confused on. I also was going to ask, do you or do people on here recommend or suggest steering clear of using a translator such as Google Translate for learning German better? I have heard many mention Rosetta Stone, but never tried that method either... Though nothing seems to match just plain old conversation with someone to learn a language....

The order of the cases is a bit confusing to me, because I am learning them (at school) as Nominativ, Akkusativ, Dativ, Genetiv. Is this something you've heard of before?
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 7 лет назад
Yeah, nowadays they just sort them by how frequently they occur in German, they've been doing that for a while now - both in other countries and Germany afaik. It doesn't really matter, you just have to be aware of what's what; I use color coding anyway. The reason I put them in this order is because that's still the order that was somehow agreed on once upon a time "internationally", mostly because of Latin; again, there is a lot to be said for the method they are using nowadays, but if you ever want to learn other languages with case systems, you are likely to come across the order I'm using or at least similar ones. For example, this order is also used in Russian and the two additional cases they have were just attached at the end. Ultimately it's just a linguistic decision, it doesn't change anything meaning-wise; you mostly need to be aware that I am using this order, although it rarely becomes relevant. I always mention the relevant case by name (so I don't say stuff like "second case") and consistently use the assigned colors :)
@danlyle531
@danlyle531 7 лет назад
Thanks, colour coding really helps! I think I'll try to colour code them when possible, until I can remember it all. And I'll definitely use the names of the cases instead of the numbering system that I've seen - it seems even more confusing at the moment.
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 7 лет назад
oh yeah, numbering them is completely useless to me unless they are consistent across all languages and teaching materials; which we've already established they aren't. so yeah, bet to go with the terms.

@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 10 лет назад
It doesn't have to have an article, it just has to have a gender; you decline all adjectives when they go with nouns, even if there is no article. That's why it's so important to be aware of genders, not just recognize them when you read the article :)
