Our sounds are pretty hardcore. So hard core that we need a specific term such as Auslautverhärtung to describe that plosives (p,b,d,t,g,k) do NOT get to be soft at the end of words. NO! YOU are HARD, verdammt!
This phenomenon is a big part of why many people might think German sounds "choppy", by the way :)

What you need to do to be my intro:
Record yourself saying the following things:
"Hallo Leute! Ich bin ___ (You can say whatever you want here - name, (youtube) nickname, where you live, where you're from, why you're learning German, or anything else you'd like, one or more things. It's best if you do this part in German, too, but if you're too shy, English is fine as well - just try to keep the video to roughly 10 seconds or shorter) und ihr seht Deutsch Für Euch!"
Please don't edit your videos; if you'd like something changed (e.g. color correction), let me know in your email. I'll make sure to make you look as good as possible anyway, though ;)
I can use a lot of video formats, but your safest bets are the usual candidates: .avi, .mov, .mp4 - DON'T use .dv, please.
Once you're happy with your video, send it to me via ONE of these channels:
- attach the video to an email to dfekontakt@gmail.com
- send me a DropBox link/invite me to a folder (also dfekontakt@gmail.com)
- send me a link to a the video on RU-vid, also via mail
- please title your message "DFE Intro"
There's NO time limit for this, this will be an on-going thing as long as you send me videos.

We have that soft/hard concept for the consonants in our language too (Macednian). But what I found interesting from this lesson is that in our language it is the opposite. Those letters you classified as soft are called hard in our language and vice versus.

Yes, yes,yes! I was just waiting for you to mention "vibration of the vocal chord"! In my English ESL teachers' manual, the term they used was "voiced"=vibration of vocal chord, "unvoiced"= no vibration of vocal chord. Cheers.

Hm, I don't know if you have covered this in a different video, but this is actually also important, if you know how the word is pronounced but not spelled. I notice this now when I help my son with his homework and have to explain him, that it helps to pronounce the plural of a word in order to find out whether it's "Tag" or "Tak" (Tag -> Tage, so no "k" in the end).

Aaah dammit, I completely forgot about that. And to make matters worse I even know that method, so I can't even hide behind ignorance... meeeeh. On the other hand, I'm not too sure if this helps if you don't already know the language/the word in question (since you need to know the plural and be able to recognize what sounds correct).

This semester I enrolled in a linguistics course for teachers in English. We're starting on phonology now, and I think it would be interesting to compare your version of an IPA consonants and vowels chart for German with an analogous one for English. Would you delight and inform us by preparing the German version of such a video? Thanks!

Funny I never noticed this. One of the reasons I can never quite explain German to others is because I sucked it in with my mother's milk. I noticed a similar effect that might be related. English speaking people tend to drop vowels at the end of German words. Or if they don't, they tend to draw them out. I wonder if there is a similar kind of mechanism in English that tends to turn vowels at the end of words into long vowels?

Thank you, DfE, If a little technical against what friends I know use, this has helped me understand more that I didn't know- and understand what I did know better and more confidently. More vocabulary with genders would be so useful. A neuter girl sitting at Mr table usw is such an odd thing,

Hehe thank you :) A little tip: Don't say "gnädiges Fräulein" or "Fräulein" at all, it's horribly outdated and makes the average German cringe because it's become such a cliche. I get you were just trying to be polite, though :)

@John Litzenberger If there's an "ig" at the end, sometimes we pronounce it like "ik" but mostly like "ich". For example the word "vierzig" (=40) should be pronounced like "vierzik" but nearly everybody says "vierzich". Off-Topic: Why can't I comment your comment directly?

John Litzenberger "-ich" is the correct way. Slipping in an "-ig" now and then doesn't hurt, it's just not regarded as perfectly correct. It won't make you sound un-Hochdeutsch in most people's eyes, though. Happens to me all the time :P So: Just go for "-ich". I think that's what Simon was trying to say, too.

Theoretically 6 - realistically, I'd say about 3 or 4. I feel very comfortable in German and English, my French isn't great but I manage, I took Latin in school and I can survive in Japanese and Russian. Currently studying the latter.

Nope, since there the change happens at the beginning, not the end. That's just an idividual thing for this specific verb. You're right though, we do pronounce it like it was a "k" :)

Deutsch für Euch I remember from your recommendation video, you wrote "was kuckst du?" So I memorized "kucken" as "to watch" A few weeks ago I was watching some youtube videos in german, and heard "kucken" many times, and the way the word was used, it translated well with "to watch". I found out though, that they were actually saying "gucken" in the videos. So I'm having some trouble differentiating the two words. They seem to mean the same thing. The way I understand is that kucken is used only for tv and movies, and gucken means "watch" in general. Is that right?

Oh. That clears that up. It was really confusing me. When I looked up the words, kucken wasn't listed in the dictionary, but gucken was. They sound exactly the same when spoken anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter that much. Thanks!

The "ig" at the end of a word sound like "ich" to me rather than "isch". Am I hearing it right?

Hey Katja, you're sure "orange" is a good example for the "Auslautverhärtung"? Isn't it simply spelled that way because it was "imported" from French? Did you study German in university? After all, your knowledge about the theoretical parts of the language is quite advanced, which is not often the case with native speakers.

Fairly certain, yes - the fact that it's imported doesn't stand in the way of which sound it ends in, after all (quite the contrary, actually). You won't find a French person who says "orangsch", because that just doesn't coincide with their phonetics - and for the same reason, you will find plenty of German people who do. I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across here, but... it doesn't matter whether it's "originally German" or not - the demonstration was for how we pronounce it, not for how it should be pronounced in its native language. No, I didn't. Studying German in Germany won't teach you a lot of the things I discuss in my videos - some, but not much. You can get a degree in teaching German as a second language, though, which is something I'd like to tackle in the future.

Deutsch für Euch Hey Katja, ich weiß nicht, warum ich so blöd war, dir zuerst auf Englisch zu antworten... Wahrscheinlich war ich irgendwie so drin, dass ich es gar nicht mehr gemerkt habe... Die Kritik an der Wahl "orange" bezog sich nicht nur auf den Fakt, dass das Wort ein Lehnwort aus dem Französischen ist, sondern auch darauf, dass im Deutschen an und für sich allgemein keinem Plosiv+Frikativ entspricht. Schließlich sprechen wir es normalerweise als [ge], [gə] oder [gɛ] aus und weder als [kʃ] noch als [gʒ] bzw. in diesem Fall [ɳʒ]. Deshalb dachte ich jetzt, dass das eine Besonderheit des Wortes sei - basierend auf der ursprünglichen französischen Aussprache - und es zu Verwirrung führen könnte hinsichtlich anderer Worte, die auf auslauten. Anyways, bin wirklich begeistert von deinen Videos. Ich habe Germanistik an der Uni studiert und abgebrochen - genau deshalb, weil mir der sprachwissenschaftliche Anteil im Studium viel zu gering war. Tatsächlich lernt man einiges von dem, was du hier darstellst, aber einerseits nicht so schön ausführlich und andererseits ist nach dem ersten Semester dann auch bald Schluss damit und man muss sich mit literaturwissenschaftlichem Gedöns zufriedengeben. Schade... Wahrscheinlich hätte ich wirklich DaF studieren sollen, wäre wohl um einiges interessanter gewesen. Jedenfalls nochmals: Hut ab! Ich wünschte, ich wäre an der Uni auf mehr Leute deines Schlages getroffen. Mach weiter so!

Richtig! Deswegen wars auch so problematisch ein Beispiel dafür zu finden. Aber bei den Lehnworten, die wir eben mit diesem Laut haben, wenden wir auch die Auslautverhärtung an - das war der Punkt. Wäre mir was Deutscheres eingefallen, das auf [ʒ] eindet, hätte ich das genommen - aber wir haben den Laut ja nicht mal ursprünglich. Ist etwas doof, da dieser Lautwechsel im Deutschen eigentlich gar nicht anfällt, aber trotzdem beachtet werden muss, dadurch dass wir eben französische Leihworte haben. Danke! :) Ja, die Germanistik ist glaube ich sehr missverstanden :D "Ah, ich kann ja schon Deutsch, dann studier ich das mal!" Ich bin auch kein großer Literaturmensch... wäre also definitiv nichts für mich. Aber genau, DaF ist schon eher was. Ich hoffe wirklich, dass ich das in späteren Studienjahren noch unterkriege...

Deutsch für Euch Ja.... Leider... Auch sehr beliebt: "Ich wusste halt nicht, was ich sonst machen sollte..." An meiner alten Uni war es sogar so, dass die Linguistik-Dozenten ihren eigenen Fachbereich m.E. hinsichtlich der Lehre irgendwann selbst nicht mehr ganz ernst genommen haben, da es eh niemanden interessierte, und versucht haben, überwiegend Seminare zu Teilbereichen der Linguistik anzubieten, die den literaturwissenschaftlichen Anteilen am meisten ähneln, d.h. Diskursanalyse, Textlinguistik, Gesprächsanalyse... Es gibt ja z.B. in Berlin den BA-Studiengang "Germanistische Linguistik". Rein sprachwissenschaftlich, keine Literatur. Das ist dann natürlich auch echt genial, zumal es wirklich noch so viele faszinierende Aspekte der (deutschen) Sprache gibt, die man außerhalb der Uni gar nicht kennenlernt. (Ich hatte jedenfalls noch nie davon gehört.) Bin damals leider zu spät darauf aufmerksam geworden, wäre womöglich auch noch eine Alternative zu DaF. So oder so, freut mich wirklich, auf deinen Kanal gestoßen zu sein. War ein wenig resigniert wegen der universitären Erfahrungen mit der Sprachwissenschaft und habe mich durch deinen Kanal darin bestätigt gesehen, dass es durchaus eine Nische für selbige gibt - sogar auf RU-vid ^^. Weiterhin alles Gute. Ich werd immer mal wieder vorbeischauen ^^.

Eeeh, less even. It's really just about aspiration, so how much air you "push out" along with/right after the sound. I'm aware - now think about whether or not that term would really help you if you didn't already know something about phonetics ;)
