Dan, I'm a Physio in the NHS and have been struggling with communicating with an increasing number of patients who are hard of hearing while wearing PPE. I've seen your face mask video but I was wondering if you can do a video specifically for NHS staff to communicate things like titles (Docter, Nurse, Physio etc), reasons for seeing patients, reassurances, safety instructions etc? I think it would be really useful! Thanks for this great resource.

I'm loving the break down of these signs! I did a brief online course in the lockdown but the two issues I had was the hand shapes not being explained, and sometimes hard to see, and not showing or saying the individual words. This made it very tricky for me as I'm struggling with the syntax of BSL and am finding sign assisted english much easier to grasp.

Have just discovered Dan, and loving the "refresher". I had been waiting for over 45 years to find an opportunity to learn some sign language (and also took in a bit of Makaton) - having marvelled at the work of Pat Keysell on "Vision On" in the early 1970s ! It seemed a logical step for someone who can converse in three foreign languages and dabbles in four more. I finally got on board just three weeks ago with a free taster day at one of our marvellous sister colleges (South Thames Group). It was quite hard work but great fun and, having not practised it since, I have just picked up the alphabet again (and now some more !) thanks to your marvellous, clear videos - thank you ! I will now try to keep it up !

This is so interesting, because in the 'old' days, sign language was taught following Sign Supported English, which followed standard English syntax. This is how I started, rather than how signing using BSL is now taught (and rightly so). Unfortunately, over the years I've forgotten a lot of signs,so these programmes remind me of what the signs I used to know and to now move further on. What I would like urge for hearing people is the importance of face and body signalling; these are fundamental to communication. Some British people might have a problem with that!

Hello!! I’ve been learning BSL for just a few weeks (and making good progress so far!), and something I really have a problem with is grammar and phrase structure; what ‘word’ (sign) comes first, and what one should sign when saying something or making a point (or what is not necessary). I thought it’d be interesting if you’d made a video on the subject! Thank you so much for these videos, they really have been helpful to me :)

thanks for showing it multiple times and from multiple angles and explaining it clearly, it really helps :) i like how intuitive this language is and the different ways you can express yourself. is it helpful to mouth how you speak normally or to emphasise your words a bit more? i just wonder if that’s helpful because it makes lip reading easier or it’s unhelpful because people are used to reading “normal” lip movements. i’m aware it might be different for different people i just wondered what’s best practice :) thanks for your videos i really like how you lay them out and explain everything really well!

Thank you for another AMAZING 😉 video Question: do you have to raise your eyebrows Thanks
@CommandingHands
@CommandingHands 3 года назад
Thanks for watching :) Eyebrow movement is a really important part of asking questions, you can raise or furrow (lower) them to show you're asking a question. Facial expressions in BSL are linked with what you are saying, therefore it may help if you exaggerate your natural expressions. E.g. if you ask a question because you're puzzled, lower your eyebrows and tilt your head to one side. Hope this helps! Thanks again.

A question - there are many words in BSL that involve a circular motion e.g. 'who', 'video', 'pizza', does it matter which direction the circular motion is, clockwise or anticlockwise?
@CommandingHands
@CommandingHands 3 года назад
Good question! With signs such as "who", the circle is motioning inwards so depending on your dominant hand it would be clockwise or anticlockwise. Some signs require specific direction on the circular motion, for example the sign for "well done" is two thumbs up and forwards motioning alternating circles towards the person you're signing well done to. To change the direction would change the meaning. With objects (e.g. pizza), your sign is often reflective of the shape, so the direction of the circle wouldn't matter as long as you formed the circular motion. Hope this helps :) Thanks for watching.
@nigel4782
@nigel4782 3 года назад
@@CommandingHands a very comprehensive answer, thanks for taking the time. You using the word 'inwards' rather than my clock/anticlockwise really helps when I think about the sign. A great help, thanks again.

Awesome video, thanks for explaining. As BSL uses a different word/sign order, do you mouth the words as you say them? Or do you mouth them as if you were saying it in English? Eg, do you mouth "name you what?" or do you mouth "what's your name?" Thanks

Hello. I am just trying to begin learning BSL. I've had a brain injury and am confused by the word "toilet", as I've seen it signed in this video with an open hand to the chin but I've also seen toilet signed by using an up and down motion on the opposite shoulder? Also... "Prefer" and "Use" appear to be the same sign? Have I missed something please or is this because the signs change depending on the sentence structure? Thank you.

You can indeed use the same signs for both words. In that case, the lip pattern and context would help you distinguish the signs. Toilet is a sign that has many variations, for example many people tap the letter T twice. I tend to use a flat hand and tap the side of my index finger against my chin.
