Welcome to Elite Athletes TV. I'm Mike Pawlawski, former 11 year pro quarterback and quarterbacks coach. As many of you know I am also a college football analyst. So I get to see college football all the time. I love watching new schemes. Coach Jay Norvell has been really good up at Nevada. He has a great quarterback in Carson strong, who can absolutely deal from the pocket, he's got a big time arm, he's got some good receivers to throw the ball to and they run an air raid style of system. They have a lot of really good concepts to drive the ball down the field. One of the defensive coverages that you get when you run that air raid system, or if you run a spread system, oftentimes is cover 4. And so we're going to look at a play today that I love. It's got a couple different pieces to it that are different in cov. 4. Beating cover 4 so many times, you end up having to dump that ball off underneath and taking the flat and taking the flat and taking the flat and it gets boring. Eventually teams can start to squat. This play design gives you a way to push the ball vertically with cover four.
Anytime we're talking about defensive coverage schemes, you have to think about what am I trying to beat? You're trying to beat the technique of the coverage. What does that mean in cover 4? The safeties, if you get a vertical route, anything that presses at him, once you get past 9-12 yards, any vertical route that presses at him, he's got to cover it. He also has to protect the backside safety. So any route that goes across the field he's going to have to cut as well. So those are two techniques that that safety has as rules and techniques for. By attacking both of the rules on the play side safety in this case, Nevada is taking advantage of all coverage rules in this play.

So this play is a wonderful piece of offense. If you want to learn how to beat cover 4 that's another piece in your arsenal you can always run that curl post over the top. Then once they've seen that enough run inside stem with the bench over the top and that gives you that scissors concept. Now that you pushed that cover 4 deep you've got those guys thinking about the deep ball, you can attack the flat again and so you've got to play this little game of taking the flat then hitting one over the top and going high with the ball and then hit the flat again. The key is always on offense take what they give you and this play gives you a another tool in your arsenal to attack cover 4. Absolutely love it! Jay Norvell is doing a great job and Carson strong is a guy who is a potential high round NFL draft pick there in Nevada. They are playing at a high level right now.
I love seeing great offensive play design and I wanted to show you some cov 4 beaters to help you beat cover 4.

Old TCU (Gary Patterson) Cov 4 rule: If he is vertical at LB depth (around 5 yards) he is yours for the rest of the play. The scissors used to kill us. I got this from Youngstown St: When #1 runs at #2 the CB yells "Frame" and this alerts the Safety and they just wait for those two receivers to come to them. Even if the CB is wrong and there is no scissors look we are still sound on the back end.. Norvell's play is a good variation of 4 verts. And I don't care what you call the defense, if you get 4 verts you are playing man. One question about Norvell's play: who is hot? If the RB is only pass pro I guess there are some sight adjusts for blitzes. Great analysis. I am seeing this play a lot at the HS level.

UW plays some. You can't live in it or teams will run the ball up and down the field.
