How to change your own motorcycle oil and filter.
As the season comes to a close I thought I would put together a how to video for a DIY Oil change on my Triumph America. I am a motorcycle instructor but I am not a mechanic, so I want to make clear that although I am showing you step-by-step how I change my motorcycle oil and filter your motorcycle owner's manual and service manual should be your bible when it comes to how or when to service your motorcycle. That said, knowing how to change your own oil and filter will not only save you money, but also precious time since you no longer have to wait for an appointment at your local bike shop!
If you choose to go more by the book on torque settings for your oil filter and drain plug, consult your owners manual for the torque settings. Most importantly...always use motorcycle specific oil! It is designed specifically for motorcycles!
One clarification. Check your oil level after you have started your motorcycle. In particular, if you did not fill your oil filter with oil before installing it your oil level will drop a bit as it fills the oil filter!
Things that you will or may need to change your oil and filter:
Motorcycle Oil
Motorcycle Oil Filter
Crush Washer
Oil funnel

Oil filter wrench or cap (especially if the filter was previously overtightened)
Motorcycle jack (optional)
Wrench or socket to fit your oil drain plug
Tool to remove and tighten your oil cap
Torque wrench for those who want to do it by the book and not by feel (check your owner's manual for proper torque settings)

8:42 if you don't have any friends (like me) pick up a mirror on a telescoping handle. Bought 1 from amazon for $4. Mine even came with lights! Sit on your back, stand up it off the kickstand and extend the mirror. I don't know WHY makers won't just install a freaking dipstick on the filler cap.....

You can use a quarter for the fuel cap

@@CharlesC.-ii9wc A Canadian quarter was a bit thin for the oil cap…also tried a loonie (Canadian dollar). Basically you just need something thick enough to fit the slot where you can make it work and a bit of leverage. Sounds like you made the quarter work. Thanks for commenting.

Don't forget to check the oil again after the engines reached running temperature and then allowed to stand for a couple of minutes. Great video Thanks

2:33 I've run into similar situations and? a LOONEY fits perfect with a pair of channel lock pliers. I've also used quarters and vice grips from time to time.

A little ingenuity goes a long way sometimes. Sometimes it seems like the engineers are just messing with us 😀

@@CaledoniaKeys I know right? I had to change the clutch plates on my 1975 honda 400/4 and it used a special socket that had 6 prongs sticking out and the "nut" had 6 indents. Me talking to a honda mech: why wouldn't they just use a hex nut? Him: I dunno, there's no reason not to. You must be old enough to remember McBride Cycle in Toronto? I lived just north of there, spent many an hour in that place.

You get a thumbs up for no "old man" groans kneeling down to reach the drain plug or filter hehehe. If I made a video like this first it would be the rifle snaps from my knees, then the groan as I got down, then? "someone help me up" hahahaha. When I drop something in my shop I pause "how bad do I want it"? 🙂

when we have to change the engine oil? after 3000km/ or 2000 km?

Check your owner’s manual for the official service interval. Generally if it is not the first service you do the oil every 10,000 km or year (whatever comes first). @@CaledoniaKeys 10K is pushing it, imo. Changing your oil is the cheapest insurance on keeping your engine running trouble free. Yours was nice n clean coming out so you're doing something right.

Never had to lift my 2016, the spot to lift it is sketchy. Be careful with the slippery synthetic, I used racing oil once and the clutch screamed nooo. I use Delo like the gold wing dudes use.

If you use AMSOIL motorcycle oil, you can extend the drain interval to TWICE the manufacture’s recommended mileage or one year (whatever comes first).
