How to Change Oil Properly

Today’s video subject will be proper oil change procedure. Despite the fact that oil change on the majority of motorcycles is a VERY simple process that takes about fifteen minutes, with breaks included, the internet, and RU-vid in particular, is filled with guides that offer all sorts of strange and often bizarre advice. My video won't include any extravagant practices - it will simply demonstrate a regular, proper oil change without any hocus-pocus. At most, maybe there will be a couple of important points that many people tend to overlook during the process, but nothing more than that.

On Moto Control channel you will find videos about motorcycles, motorcycle riding techniques, tips & tricks and online motorcycle training for beginner and advanced riders!
A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). My advanced training course makes emphasis on slow speed riding techniques at first (such as good clutch and throttle control, proper riding posture, proper use of vision, etc.), then proceeds to more advanced techniques (such as aggressive braking, trail braking, maximal lean angle). The course incorporates a lot of exercises from DOSAF slow speed riding (similar to police rodeo like motorcycle training in USA), braking and cornering exercises and motogymkhana style riding. And now, since I actively learn English - I decided to post some useful videos for both your and mine practice!😉
🏍️🏍️🏍️
Since everyone writes this, it's necessary, I suppose 🤷, so here we go. Disclaimer: Ride at your own risk, you are responsible for your own safety. Me, Andrey Bodrov and my channel, Moto Control disclaim any liability incurred in connection with the use of riding techniques from this channel. Use common sense, wear full protective gear and ride in a safe and predictable manner!

I found a good trick to get that last bit of oil out is using a long straw and suck the rest out like a milkshake. The oil is full of vitamins and minerals and goes great with whip cream.😮

When draining old oil out I take off the cap where I pour new oil in, makes the old oil drain out easier.

One problem people often have is accidentally putting in too much oil. I find that it doesn't take much oil to make a big change in the level in the sight window. To avoid that problem, I put in say 100ml less than I think I need, and then check the level, and put the rest in slowly as needed. I don't think that slightly overfilling is a big deal however. Every time a mechanic has changed the oil on my bikes, they have overfilled them slightly.

I usually wait for ten minutes after stopping the engine, and then check the level. Thanks for another good video.

Nice and simple. And although you show it, i don't think you specifically said to hold the bike upright when checking the proper level. Makes a big difference!

Yes, there IS harm in pre-filling the filter. You can EASILY get shit on the clean side. Besides, there's still oil coating the insides of the engine. It's fine.

Awesome video, as always! Something that could be added, is that at least here in Argentina, some mechanics will have proper ways to dispose of the old oil, so sometimes you can take it to them to get rid of. Just don't throw it in any random place that's not meant for it.

Good advice. Every mechanic should keep the exhausted oil and follow specific rules for waste treatment.

Спасибо за совет о наполнении фильтра маслом перед установкой. Хоть и не критично. Но какое это удовольствие первый раз заводить свой байк после замены масла с мыслями о его неполебимом здоровье. Нельзя лишать себя этого)) chiao

I think, as we can pour oil to a new filter oil so just do it. Even in very short time oil always late to lubricant all moving engine parts.

What drives me mad is the fact that you can't find torque values in some manuals. Instead you see: visit a dealer (F9 joke: Ducati Dealer X)

Finally some RU-vidr that is 100% right about the proper procedure to change the oil, everything else is just BS…
@David-uk7sm
@David-uk7sm 9 месяцев назад
Very true, I think I know the RU-vidr who he mentioned. This guy says we need to rev the shit out of the bike before an oil change!. That is nuts given the oil is old and giving you the least amount of protection.

@AdrianWahyu-cw2hy
@AdrianWahyu-cw2hy Год назад
2 stroke still need motor oil and procedure same as video explained. Other oil is "2T oil" . 2T oil use for lubricant crankshaft con rod, which cause of sistem 2stroke engine not allowed motor oil reach conrod.

You don’t need to fill filter with oil, even on some oil filters is image that you don’t need to fill it with oil… The best advice is to use just simple motorcycle manual for this work and I haven’t seen in any that you need to fill up filter with oil, some bikes requires crushers to be replaced.

Use a magnet to pull the filter out. Not a knife lol. Absolutely under no circumstance should you use a steel screwdriver to put your filter out against your aluminum block. Ever.
