So happy I found your video. I rescued a 7 month old Cane Corso, and I didn't want to add to her anxiety by pushing the crate training. I wanted her to feel safe and build he confidence before demanding too much from her. Her training is going amazing and I figure she can handle trying crate training. Love your ideas on the frozen kongs and bones with marrow. I know she will be successful. Thank you
The most helpful tip i got was to not be too tough with a puppy and focus mainly on potty training. Especially the advice how long a puppy can hold its bladder (2 month 2 hours, 3 month 3 hours, 4 month 4 hours) and that you should give huuuge amounts of treats when the puppy completes the potty outside.
Great series. A word of caution about the raw marrow bones. Before filling them - take your finger and run it all inside the hollow part. Check to see if there are any sharp protrusions that would be hard on the dog's tongue. If it scratches your finger - imagine what it does to their tongues. We usually take a Dremel and grind it smooth before re-using.
When I first got my bully she was only a couple of months old.... We would go on long walks and when we get back I would stick her in her crate and she would pass out. Within a couple of days she was going in there herself when she is tired and when I wanted her to. I’m glad I took a week of work to get her adjusted to her new home.
Oh my god I HAVE to know more about this comment!? 😆 It's a joke right?! Either that or I'd hope you were well crate trained yourself by the end of that 4 years!!!
Seeing you grow makes me happy man. I have helped tons of people man around my apartment complex, fixing dog pulling is a breeze and they are so shocked and ask where I get it from and I grab the persons phone and open up RU-vid and sub for them lol. The only issue is they don’t have the “boss” mindset. That’s where a lot of people fall short when I help.
Tried a crate w my goldenshepherd puppy until about 3.5 months and it was a nightmare - barked for hours in a complete panic. Never slept.Tried all the tricks. Ditched the crate and he's been great.
Hello just wanted to know that I enjoy your videos and appreciate you being down to earth and being honest with people about training their dogs. I love my dogs, but I don’t like any dog jumping up on me or pulling me along while on walks. I have two strong huskies and they walk good on the leash. However, they will test me every now and then. I use your technique; even if I have to do it 10 times or more, they understand and get the message. I also don’t let them meet every dog that they see on walks. I pay very close attention to other dog’s body language. So many people come up to me to say that my dogs are so well behaved and can’t believe that I can walk two huskies at the same time and not being dragged down the street. I tell them lots of training and patience and correcting your dog when he/she does something that is inappropriate.
i love your videos im writing everything down for when i get my second dog and hope to train them to the level that they can walk free with me and trust me fully thanks joel youre the best!
Our Shep likes his crate covered with a fan blowing on him. Happened upon it by chance but boy did it make a difference!!! He also will sit in front of a fan now outside of his crate...
Great instructive video. For my puppy people with tiny puppies (mine are toy and mini pups so they go home very small around 5 pounds or less) I recommend for them an exercise pen with a plastic crate (more like a den) with the door off so they can go in and out. Then they can use pee pads and eat and drink at they need. They can also entertain themselves. As they grow and age they can graduate to a large crate or no crate at all.
That's what I have been doing with my 9 week old French Bulldog puppy. He's not even 5lbs and I tried recreating similar set up to what his breeder had. It's been working. He goes on the pee pads and not his crate.
My wife and I recently got a new puppy (8wks old). We also have a 6yo dog (SPCA and came house and kennel trained so we just had to do a refresher). Anyway I have no idea how to train the puppy… house training, kennel training, no biting…shoot I am 63 and probably not the wisest decision to add a new puppy. Could definitely use guidance as I need as much training as the puppy…this video is nice and some things I have tried. No matter the time I go to bed she will wake up and whine around 5am…I will take her outside…bring her back in but she starts whining again maybe 30 min later. I am rambling just getting desperate for suggestions so I can get sleep (on and off 5 and a half hours of interrupted sleep isn’t good for me or my patience.
We just got our new 8 week old Weimaraner. We are in our 70s! I have crate trained dogs since 1975. Never an issue. This boy however is giving me a run for my money!! He howls and whines every time I put him in his crate...drama king! I'm hoping he improves in the next week!! Good luck!
Thanks for the video. What should I do if my dog always chooses jumping on the sofa and sleeping on me, rather than using her crate voluntarily? Should I continually pick her up when she falls asleep on me and lock her in the crate with a good toy? She's generally fine when she's in the crate and definitely isn't scared of it. If she does go in there, she'll sit down for 30 seconds then decide she wants to sleep on me instead.
I know 2 people who's dogs have died by leaving their collars on in the kennel. My own best friends husky got his collar stuck in the metal bars and luckily he managed to slip out of it, but it could have hurt him. My dog is kennel trained and as a dog groomer it's really important that dogs are ok in a kennel. That being said, no collars and nothing that they can ingest that isn't supposed to be ingested. All the things he said to give to the dog is right, but no rope toys (groomed a puppy that had part of one hanging out of its butt and could have been killed by one) and no fabric/stuffing/squeaker/soft toys. I also don't put beds or blankets in there because too many dogs rip them up and it's just turned into expensive shreds of fabric that the dog can swallow.
Unfortunately Costco has changed their Bully Stick provider. They have replaced it with a different brand which we are now trying out. Stock up if you can still get the one Joel has recommended.
@@saramarie8596 It has Cadet prominently across the front of the product. 9-12" Bull Stick 12 pack, 1.32 lbs. My dog is fine gnawing on the replacement but doesn't finish them with the same enthusiasm as the Cadet.
Hi Joel, how do you address whining in the crate? I know it's a state of mind in the dog, but should I try address it in the same way as you address barking, by tapping the crate for example? Or do I simply ignore and wait for a sufficient time gap? Thank you for your guidance! You've been a great help!
How's it going since you wrote this? I would wait it out. I would completely ignore. Only when quiet would I make eye contact, praise, and/or treat. I've seen Joel bang a door to stop a dog barking/whining from the other side but I'm not sure I'd do that when using a crate since you want to associate the crate with calmness and rest. A long walk before working on crate training should be helpful. If the dog's brain is zoned out and not even focused on getting your attention, try a loud noise like a whistle or air horn loud enough to stop the brain.
Thanks for the informative video! Love your channel! Question - how did you train your puppy to walk right into the crate on his own without resisting? Will the tips you shared get our puppy to that point where we don't need to coerce him to get in?
My dog was 6 months old when I adopted her. She is now 8mo. She chews on her crate bedding. She’s a lab mix and I think she needs thicker padding; I try to accommodate but this issue continues.
I honestly thought you was so arrogant past couple months while watching your training videos but the more I watch the videos of you just speaking I actually think your a really decent person..just shows you shouldn't ever judge anyone before you actually know them..not that I actually know you lol but you get my point
We've tried all that with our 10 month old Whippet but he just refuses to be left alone in his crate. He cries and scratches endlessly. However when he has the house he's perfectly behaved and never messes anything. How do we get him crate trained so we can leave him at boarding places?
Hey Joel. Can you address overnights while in the crate? Should we expect to have to get up every 2 to 3 hours for a three month old puppy given how long the young ones can hold their bladder?
I feel lots of info is being missed here. Separation anxiety, beds being chewed up and ingested, how to get a dog to stop “digging” at his bed, feeding normal meals in the crate. And telling people to just hit the crate to stop barking? That might work for a very short time and even can cause anxiety in certain dogs and reverse the positive feeling of being in the crate.
@@johnolsen394I buy marrow bones from a meat market. She licks and nibbles the marrow out of the inside of the bone in one sitting. When she's done with it, , I take it and stuff it full with wet dog food, then freeze it. When I leave the house for a while, she gets the frozen bone to chew and nibble on. That's what Joel is talking about. I hope that helps.
You are definitely the best dog trainer. I do have a question…… my puppy is 8 weeks old. We collected him yesterday. Is this too young to crate train him? Many of the treats I’ve tried to buy aren’t suitable for puppies under 12 weeks. Thank you
How do you train a dog who is not treat / food oriented? I have a very picky Alaskan Malamute puppy who will not eat treats at all. She only eats her morning and evening meals and, for the rest of the day, ignores food altogether. The cow bone marrow is just ignored, as is all the other chew toy options you mentioned. I have already waisted so much money in different training treats that she completely ignores.
Funny enough it is now illegal here in Sweden to even have a door mounted on a crate indoors, so if you have a crate indoors you have to remove the door, absurd.
My 10 week old boston terrier will pee or poop in her crate even if i know she has been out and peed etc . How do i stop this? The crate is not too big but she does not seem to care !!
about bully sticks....my neighbor threw a very large one over the fence for my small shitzu. She loved it and I thought it would be safe because it was so large. Not so...after chewing on it and getting it soft, she swallowed the entire thing whole. She was choking on it..it was lodged in her trachea. I drove like a maniac to the vet and by the time we got it somehow worked it's way down into her gut, but she was injured from it . I felt lucky it didn't kill her. I never used bully sticks again.
Great video to home a 6 month old female shepherd who is exhibiting excitement or submissive peeing ... starting crate training as well as keeping interactions calm and consistent. I take her out side and she waits until she comes in to pee. Maybe a video with a lil on this would be great..
I have the same issues with my 9 month old German Shepherd/ Husky mix, just picked up a crate today, hoping she will pee outside when I take her out in the morning
Question - we have 14 mo. medium super people lover pitbull rescue - has been sleeping in crate for 2 months (a few days after adopting). Want to train her for time in crate during day so we can be out for an hour or two at a time and also to prep her for boarding for 5 days in a kennel. She's a MAJOR chewer, (bully sticks do not last 45 min...) will try these methods. Any other suggestions? Appreciate your knowledge/videos immensely.
I have my puppy a week now and I've slept on the couch with her a mistake I know but she was poorly with diarrhoea so now I need to crate train her for night time so my older dog can get back her routine of sleeping in her bed under my bed . Please help I'm not consistent when I hear the puppy cry while inside the crate I feel guilty so let her out and go back to sleeping on the couch with her .
Be the most exciting thing in the room. Pat your legs, make your voice a higher pitch, have treats as a reward, etc. Recall them randomly until you can fade out the treats and be more calm with the recall. The main thing is just to be as rewarding as possible when the dog comes to you. Pets, treats, tug, whatever their favorite thing is. It might help to start on a leash and give them a little pull towards you to get them going but puppies learn pretty fast and you shouldn’t have to have the leash for long. I hope this helps a little bit :)
I just got my puppy 2 days ago, he whine and howls all night its so fustrating and i dont know how to train him not to whine. Even after a walk i wil l put him in there and he just whines and im so tired from it and i want him to go in there when i tell him but he dosent.
I have a 12mo old Shiba. Are these items safe for her at this age? thank you. Have really learned a lot from your videos and look forward to a well adjusted shiba.
When a 3 month old standard poodle growls barks during playtime with another dog, should I be concerned. Is this a puppy phase or do they grow out of it?
Do you have any advice on handling a 7 month old pup barking at the vac and swifter floor duster. He even barks at the ironing board or a step ladder. I even try to introduce him to the item, let him touch it, talk to him calmly and he will stop barking and then start up again. I have started to remove him from the area to vac. Thank you for all your help from your advice and help.
What if you’re trying to prevent the puppy from chewing bedding? Does this slow the process when it isn’t as comfortable because there isn’t a soft surface?
My Golden at around 6 mos hated Pasta crate where he would growl and snap at us if we tried getting him in it. It wasnt worth the stress , we stopped using it and he never wrecked the house ever. Not sure why he hated it .
Can I apply this to using let's say a bathroom as a crate? And if so is it best to do it with a grated toddler door or is it possible to close the actual bathroom door.
Hi, Joel, we make all of those things. He loves his crate, he is there almost all of the day when we are home. When we leave, we give him something to chew and he is done almost in 20 min. after that he he starts whining, he sticks out his tongue and start drooling. We watch him though a camera. We return to the house, we wait for him to calm down and open the crate. He doesnt want to leave and fall asleep in the crate. How can we manage that?
I haven't been able to find the marrow bones anywhere - can anyone give advice? Also - can we talk about how the puppy just walked in there? Mine won't do that.
I would add I also think of the crate as the puppies 'safe space' so i try to disturb them as little as possible when they are in it, this especially applies if there are young children around as even puppies sometimes need a break from play and cuddles!
