My goodness after watching this I was way to hard on my 18 week puppy and wondering why the walks were frustrating. I did the training in this video and it was WORLDS better!! I stopped focusing on the destination of the walk and more on the loose leash and us sticking together. Did lots of circles in the driveway 😀
I understland you. I even had dog trainers advising me to just drag the dog on the leash if he was fighting the leash. I could not do this. It felt so much like abuse to me. When he fight the leash, what works better for me and my puppy, is to stop walking, pull a bit on the leash to give a loose leash and wait…… wait….. and wait until he calms down. He always does and goes further with me with much less fear.
please more puppy videos my staff is full of energy mental and physical. Can you make a video on how to calm down a overly excited dog after player / walking. if this is possible. i would be forever greatful.
At least 2 hours a day of hard exercise (running, fetching, etc), plus daily walks & leash work. Puppies need to be drained of energy, not just given a short play or walk session.
Try keeping a leash/collar on during play sessions and start incorporating speratic, short obedience sessions lasting 5-30 sec. For young puppies, I'd recommend mainly working on responsiveness to their name utilizing a higher value food reward. For a bit older pups, make them actually think by alternating between 3+ commands and be sure these aren't given in the same order, randomness is key. After play, see if they need to go to the bathroom - going to a separate area can sometimes help signal playtime is over. Next, try doing a positive crate session with a longer lasting treat (ex: filled frozen Kong toys). For high energy older dogs, you can switch from using a crate to doing a "climb", "bed", "place" or (whatever you want to call it).

Subs ... Not funny ... training treats need to be a quick reward ... some dogs can make a meal out of one piece of kibble... you need to learn which treats are effective rewards.
@@JC-sf2qm Pup was getting used to a new treat - she's a smart girl and was giving it an investigate before crunching and swallowing. Once it received the Loopy seal of approval she was much quicker afterwards.
WOW!!! I tried this with my very strong 4 month old lab/pit mix and it’s WORKING!!! She needs constant reminders but that’s fine, I know she’s a puppy! I’m just happy she’s no longer threatening to pull my arm out of its socket! She’s even starting to respond to me when I call her away from stimuli. I’m floored. Thank you Joel!!!
Best method I've tried for puppy walking is go the opposite direction of the one they want. It makes them aware of what you are doing. Right out of the door if they go right you go left. Also, to get them to follow, get their attention, say "let's go" just start walking without looking back at them. The second you feel slack in the leash, turn, praise and then treat them.
@@equinoxproject2284 I am going to use LET'S GO with my 4 month old Golden Retriever... I like your idea about you feeling the loose leash and then turning back to praise/reward.
Darn it, I correct my puppies... They are so strong they pull hard, but the correction worked and they pulled less now and can walk loose leash most of the time.
I agree that these puppy videos are great and has enabled me to lower my expectations of my 3 month old non-littermate boxers and enjoy this stage more. It would be helpful for those of us with two puppies to get some advice on how to get puppies to stop fighting/wrestling so much. When they are out of their crate together, they spend 90% of their time in vigorous (non-aggressive) fighting. They are oblivious to anything else going on around them. They feed off each other’s energy. On the other hand when they are out alone, they are very sweet calm puppies.
Your videos have helped me so much. I have a 2yo Boxer Mix and an 8mo Lab Mix. I have just started walking them together. The Boxer is awesome. The puppy pulls constantly and is all over the place. When the pup and I walk alone he does much better. I have been working with him for awhile on keeping the leash loose by pulling back on the leash everytime he tightens it up. Your video reminded me that he is still young and I need to be patient with him. Thank you for your amazing videos. Training a dog can be overwhelming. Without your videos I would have no clue. So thank you. Your training methods are the best I have seen on RU-vid.

This is exactly what I was looking for Joel. Thank you. I was getting so frustrated with the “look at me” then give a treat on walks. I found that my pup only learned the cycle of how to get a treat with no improvement at all in the pulling. The release of pressure as a reward is also the foundation of horse training.
I have taught my pup to come back, turn inward, and heel when he gets too far ahead and I stop walking. Which I then treat. Works pretty well and a good method for correcting pulling while staying fun and positive. Other things that worked for me was sometimes turning around unexpectedly, and asking my dog to "look at me" sometimes when he walks. I also typically take a long leash for him to do his thing when we are not walking. He knows the difference between the leashes because it changes his behavior immediately (he knows it is longer and he is allowed to go further away from me).
ur method is so effective yet so simple. all u have to do is lay the foundation of "ur not walking anywhere unless youre walking WITH me" and boom, they figure it out fast.
This was great. Suggestions for a 6 yo dog that constantly stops on walks, opposite of leash pulling. She just started doing this in the past year - even at the beginning of a walk vs. stopping bc she doesn’t want to go in.

The loud sound you talked about that I use for my dogs when I am saying “I am serious, stop that right now” is a loud “Aaaaa!” sound and for mine it works.
I watched your video on developmental goals for puppies between 2 and 18 months last night and it was extremely helpful, as have been other training videos you’ve done. Thank you. I’ve recommended these to other people. It’s been 30 years since I’ve had a puppy as my last 2 rescues were older, so at 70 I definitely need re-training! I need a well behaved dog at my age and my new girl is responding well.
My wife and I are in the same boat, i.e., first puppy (golden-doodle) in about 30 years. Other dogs the last 30 years have all been rescues or rehomes. Since it has been 9 months since you posted, how are things with your pup now?

Just love your training videos helped me so much with my 4 month old mini poople she is very smart i use a harness she just started jumping on me an biteing leash dont no what started this as few days ago she walked great on leash,feels like retraining again guess not jus for her me too haha
I've watched quite a few different dog training videos and I like these best. I like that he has different expectations for pups, doesn't make treats the end goal for the dogs, and I've had real success with his methods. Thank you for putting these out for us to learn.
Agree just a little knee to correct them but remind people that it has to be gently, but from my other post I pointed out you can hurt a dog if they run at you full speed and you put a knee up, thank you again for all the videos, I have learned a lot from your approach.

Wish I would’ve found these videos when I first got my puppy. I watched another popular guy with the slip leash, it would constantly go back on his neck, and they say to keep it behind the jawline but it wouldn’t stay(so frustrating)and I never could figure that thing out my puppy would literally choke himself and constantly pull, he still pulls some but our walks are so much better thanks Joel please make more small breed puppy videos
I have 2 french bulldog puppies and my sciatica was not letting me treat and walk them so I taught my 8 and 6 year old how to loose leash walk the dogs in the house. They were much closer to the ground. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Once the puppies got the hang of it I took over. The 8 year old still helps. There are 2 puppies after all. ☺
Thanks for the puppy video….good reminder that they are babies but need the consistent training…not too harsh but consistent. My 3 month old Golden retriever goes from 100 mph to sound asleep…..not much in between. We are both learning from your videos. Thanks so much.
I have a black standard poodle that is somewhere between 1y/1y and 2 months, and he looks so much like this puppy. I recently adopted him from a family with a little child, a wife that didn't wanted it, and a husband who loved him but wasn't at home to dedicate any time at all. You can imagine how well "educated" my dog was. So I received a dog that wights 10 kilograms, wearing a choke collar because he wouldn't stop pulling. 10 kilograms, and a freaking choke collar/leash. He was a disaster: wouldn't stop pulling, barely socialized at all (didn't have a walk until he was 6 months old), freaking out every time he saw another dog while being on the leash, yet acting not interested in playing or running when being loose in the dogs park. He still doesn't know how to play with other dogs, if that tells you something about how sad his previous life was. I've been watching this channel for the past month and he's made HUGE improvement. Walks are almost perfect now, he's starting to get that I won't allow him going nuts every time he sees a dog, and I keep learning how to help our walks being so much better. Yesterday I learned the flip-butt move, and I applied today 😊 Poodles are really smart, I hadn't noticed that he was doing the butt thing to me, exactly like you described: when getting corrected, he won't turn his head anymore, he'll go like "yeh yeh I heard you, now I'll just keep staring that dog until he's close enough to jump on him". So today I was like "nope, no sir. You're looking right into my face and you'll sit or I won't release you" Anyways, thank you. I truly believe in this process and I'm confident that I will be able to fully trust Kiwi wherever we go 🙏🥰
@@jennymunday7913 this puppy takes after his husky dad! The mom is actually half poodle-half pitty. My cousin got two puppies from the same litter, and one of them looks more like a pit, and the other looks like pit poodle
@@allenrulz101 Mine takes after his husky parent too! So I can give you a few tips maybe that will help. 1. Huskies are smart. Like crazy smart, but they hate being told what to do. You have to be really in charge and let them know you're the boss or they won't listen to you. You don't need to be mean or angry, just very clear on who the boss is. 2. They will eat all sorts of things they aren't supposed to, so be prepared to really work on that. 3. Exercise the heck out of him. They need to run. I ended up getting a bike and a harness for mine. He will seriously run for a mile just pulling me behind him. It took him less than 5 minutes to figure out which side I wanted him on and how to avoid getting rolled over.
@@jennymunday7913 thanks Jenny, I already see a lot of those things in Luca(the puppy’s name) it’s never a dull moment My Gf will tell him to sit, and he’ll do it, but sometimes if she tells him down right after, he’ll bark back at her and reluctantly do it haha
In this video, the puppy is motivated by treats outside the house. Mine is not. You can put a hand full of his favorite treats outside the house that he won’t even touch it. So i treat him with affection and love when he does good outside the house.

That's the dog I have and same age. I was questioning using the loose leash method. Glad you made it. I'll be more patient outside. She gets really stimulated. So it seemed to much. I'll work on it
Very handy seeing this right now. We have a 14 week old cockapoo and she (Pickle) needs a little guidance as to how to get the best out of her walks. This will help greatly. At the moment she gets tangled up in the lead she sniffs the floor constantly and she is over interested in every leaf, bit of litter, in fact everything around. When we get her attention she responds well. But as you say in video she is still very young. When would be best age, week wise, to start training her more and expecting more from her in terms of attention and positive outcomes ? Love all your videos. Especially these puppy ones you do now. It's all helping support our efforts to help our puppy get the best from walks and play etc. In fact nearly any new behaviour that she (Pickle) comes up with has us checking out what Beckman says. Absolutely LOVE this! Great timing, too - have just found out my time on a waiting list for a fantastically-bred black male Lab pup has been successful: 6 of the 13 born last night were black males (whoop!). I will be stepping up my BDT-watching even more now, that's for sure.
I used to do this same method on my puppy at 4.5 months when it was when I adopted him. It would take a lot to walk one block but he was doing pretty good until my dad started walking him and not correcting his pulls, frustrating when all the hard work just disintegrates. Now at 10 months I am using the leash walking correction methods.
Thank you so much for the puppy vids! As someone with a new puppy, these are really helpful. My 12 week old GSD is already a great walker. The leash is loose and he's walking right beside me really well (most of the time). I even stop and he stops and turns and looks at me already. Might not stay that way but it's a good start. I will definitely start with this method in a couple weeks to ease him into the real deal. Love the channel!
Your dog sounds amazing ... BUT be vigilant with your training as puppies go through many developmental stages / fear periods and can forget everything they know🤔🙄😉
awesome! The pull back into a loose leash is what I was missing! We stop until he sits and pays attention but I didn't know about the leash. 4 month beagle.

I would love to see a video on this also! I have a 4 month blue heeler, and while I know nipping is in their DNA, I'm getting biting on the hand that breaks skin. Also, he is pretty good at loose leash walking until all of sudden sometimes he pulls to the end of the leash and runs circles around me thrashing and bites when I go to grab his collar.
@@christga100 Yes! I have holes in almost every cardigan I wear…😕😕😕 I have tried standing on the leash and it works to an extent so maybe I just have him trail a leash around in the house until he finally realizes I MEAN BUSINESS 🤣
@@christga100 I actually tried this yesterday and it worked..well kind of. My pup definitely hated being in the room with the door closed but he got his feelings hurt pretty bad so not sure that's the best course to take at this young age or not. He definitely took me seriously though! I do agree that most of the craziness is excitement but I also notice him doing it when I tell him to do something he doesn't want to do i.e. come inside if he wants to stay plopped on the yard. It's like he's talking back...little stinker. He's a boxer so he is most definitely a high-energy breed. I just hope the behavior stops over time. You've given me some hope that it will. Thank you!

Love watching your videos! This method for loose-leash has been working so well for my 4-month-old GSD! But, she will often just sit and refuse to walk (usually happens a few times at the start of our walk). I’ve just been waiting her out and trying to get her interested to get up. Eventually, she continues walking. Do you have a method for this?

I have an 11 month old Australian Shepard who's well trained so far in the house and in our own yard where he listens well and stays by my side on and off leash, VERY attentive. But I'm struggling with walks away from the house, on the sidewalk, going someplace unfamiliar it's totally different. He smells every spot and blade of grass, totally distracted, pulling ahead or to the side. I keep the leash short and tug back when he pulls, I allow slack so he feels it's nicer if he doesn't pull, he's good for about 5 to 10 steps but then repeats it. I'll turn into him and make a figure 8 and he follows by my side, I'll walk the other way on a dime and he turns and follows, I keep him guessing by turning often to go back the other direction and he follows me, he looks up at me and follows, even senses me stopping and he stops just before the leash tugs, but again after 5 or 10 steps going forward again he's right back to pulling and doing what he wants, smelling the side of the sidewalk and pulling ahead. I just want him to slow down, relax and STAY consistent by my side. Is he too young? It's so frustrating. I know he can do it, he does it at home in the yard like a champ.
I’m binge watching your videos! I have my first puppy and sometimes it can be overwhelming! Can you do a video about if and how to discipline a puppy when they do something they are not supposed to, like chewing on furniture or going potty in the house? I try to watch as much as I can and we have tons of chew toys but I’m running into the issue of giving him the chew toys he can eat and then makes him have soft poos that we have to constantly watch every move he makes to take him outside…. Ugh! Who knew a puppy would be this much work? Hahaha
Joel advocates Kongs filled with appropriate wet food and then frozen, every night. Also frozen marrow bones. These should be better for the tummy issues. Are you crating the puppy?
@@TalkShowKelly hey! So thankfully the puppy phase is over, well the potty training phase anyway. My little guy is a little over a year old. He’s the potty master! Goes potty outside like a champ! Now… the issue is him being terrified of everything! I don’t understand it. Boxes, bags, even dog bones… he wants nothing to do with anything until it’s been sitting there for a good while and he’s sure it isn’t going to eat him… or something like that… idk
