As a kid that always drew alone and had relatives and friends look over and say how cool it looked, but never knowing anyone else that liked drawing as much, ego can creep in in a really pesky way in which you didn't even realize you had it. This is golden advice Brookes! It's very liberating going into an open and less defensive mindset when in class, getting critique, or in your own work in small ways like using less layers or erasing big chunks of it (the old 'hold on, I can still make this work even though I know right now it looks funny, I can fix it'). Keeping that nasty little overly-art-protective gremlin at bay by going out of your comfort. My own story with art ego I can't know it's something other artists relate to, but the mannerisms are easy to spot on others once you've realized you have the same issue and started working on it.

When I was a freshmen in highschool, I decided that it would be in my better interest to take the more advanced art class, (it was 2d art studio to be more specific) the course description said that we would mostly be utilizing charcoal, pencil, and basic essentials, along with studying models. I ended up doing none of that, in fact I remember we only worked with models near the end of the unit and did no prior muscle studies or anatomy studies. My art teacher for this class looked at my work (it was mostly of basic cartoons and animals) and said,”This would look better as a painting.” Which I did not know how to do, nor was he going to teach me. So I ended up doing three paintings that I hated. We were supposed to present it for critique, my teacher told me,”You have character in all of these...drawings, but no professionalism, you will never be an artist.” Granted I was pretty worked up at the time, I ended up chucking most of my work from that class in the garbage. I took a year off of art to avoid taking this class again (he was the main art teacher for all of the art subjects). I’m taking his most basic art course this year as a junior, and he constantly belittles me. My art has improved, at least I think it has. I still don’t know what his deal is but I definitely think that his constant bitterness fuels my desire to learn more about art. Spite is an excellent motivator, so I’ve learned.

Lucky Bebop Stop listening to that teacher :/ From where I come from, the ed system is the same, one teacher for the entire extracurricular subject, and they were usually not as passionate abour the subject. You should try getting advice/learning from someone else outside the educational system. It usually helps :3

Sometimes when I feel really worn out, like I don't improve at all and just got no motivation left in me, RU-vid is coming right in time and smashed my face with brooo's videos, and those kind of videos really make me feel like I can do it, and be an artist like I want to. So yeah, no jokes here this time, brook - thank you

3:15 yea, i used to draw heads by drawing a circle, drawing those construction lines for volume and then drawing a face on it, then i saw someone draw a line down from the circle, and that became the chin, and i like that better, so ive been doing it ever since.

this is a very interesting talk, and I totally agree. how do you deal with people that you wouldn't consider masters that try to assert themselves over you by saying "you do this wrong"? is there ever a moment, where you would say that "no, I'm fine, thanks."? because I totally can see that this is also a problem with some companies and teams, sadly.
@CharacterDesignForge
@CharacterDesignForge 6 лет назад
Yeah- as a rule I just don't accept criticism that comes unsolicited or from random RU-vid commenters. Often times, their advice is simply a personal opinion or an un-constructive attempt to tear me or my work down. Plus, it's often work that I've long moved on from, and I'm worried about the next thing. When it is solicited, or offered from a source that one trusts, being open to considering it is different than blindly accepting everything. What's most important is that you're humble in order to enable personal growth, and not simply trying to please every person with an opinion. It's a tricky situation in companies, where some people's role is only to give an opinion, so they feel a need to add one even when unnecessary. It's a talk you have to have and a balance to strike, for sure. It's hard to work for someone that doesn't trust you.

4:43 I've seen that so many times. And not just in Art, but in 3D animation too. "You've got some pretty flat lighting" will be responded to with "B-b-but that's just my style! And so is the jerky animation".
@CharacterDesignForge

Yep! Style is often intentional mistakes. People try to pass unintentional or unexperienced mistakes as intentional, and that really just doesnt work!

8:27 i think this is a fact of life, you should be receptive to ideas, because even if the person is objectively wrong, that misconception came from somewhere, and those words should not be disregarded.

The information is pretty good, but his skill isn't professional. He might be marketing himself well, making him a good salesman, but he's not a very good draftsman. I can understand why someone might ignore what he's saying when his fundamentals are kind of screwy. I don't mean to offend, I even agree with his teaching, but it's like with Jazza. The position of "fake authority", professional looking production value of the videos and theoretical knowledge of the art + philosophical principles makes a lot of people look to them for advice or direction. Even if their basic art skills are lacking, it's not like they can't teach (his basic shapes are not even in the right perspective on these otherwise simple forms). Teachers never need to be the most skilled in their subject, but they need the theoretical knowledge of the subject and the objectivity to see mistakes in others work. I'm not going to dislike this video, that's absurd. Maybe the 16 year old prodigy that was miles ahead watched this and wondered how someone like him could dare even speak about "how to learn" when he's so far behind. And that's just it, that person didn't understand why it's a silly invalid argument. This comment is not to offend anyone, they're clearly successful in what they're doing but they're not immune to criticism and when you put yourself out there you will meet people who don't agree. Not sure what you get out of the comment, seem like a self-reassuring thing. It's all good, but there you go.

all good words. I had a artist comment to me " Don't tell me any thing if your not better then me!" Sad that they have yet to grow up. So many art rendering methods and styles. Any one can be better then that artist. I wonder if they will ever be successful?
@CharacterDesignForge
@CharacterDesignForge 6 лет назад
Yeah, that response seems a bit defensive for sure. I do personally feel like critiques are best from qualified sources, and shouldn't come unsolicited. For example, I could open a random piece of art of mine up to critique from RU-vid comments, and get a hundred notes on what to change. But how can I tell which are legitimate or not, especially if I wasn't experienced myself? It takes some judgement to figure out who to listen to, but also humility to really listen when they respond.

It's just my style is my motto in a way... but sometimes it actually is since my style is cartoony since I want to do that in the future, of course... sometimes it isn't my style and just a mistake, or I was trying something new... or just wrong in it's own way.
@Peteru69
@Peteru69 6 лет назад
There's a difference between style and simply having flawed fundamentals. You have to learn the rules before you can break them properly. Sometimes as simple as truly understanding shapes in three dimensional space is vastly underrated and misunderstood by new artists. I can only advice you to ignore unnecessarily harsh criticism when you're still trying things out and then try and focus on the fundamentals in art. Anatomy, basic perspective and shape(this is huge), silhouettes and composition. I think a lot of people get caught in the social media trap too, so if you're posting your art online and getting critiques already it might be a good idea to focus more on learning the basics instead of worrying about how the next piece will be received on instagram (what do I know). With that said, discouraging yourself from drawing because others can't see what you're trying to do is a pretty common pitfall. If you want to make a career out of art, you gotta make drawing into a daily routine. The more time you can spend learning the faster you'll be good enough to take jobs left and right. If animation is the field you want to get into, all the fundamentals will come in super handy because it'll likely be what you're going to spend your time learning if you find a school that teaches animation. I know some a couple of friends who got into an animation school in Denmark (scholarships and all) and I've been to their campus a couple of times, and the school focuses a lot of teaching new students the fundamentals first. What I'm trying to convey is that fundamentals are *so* important no matter what "style" you want to use in the end.

Hi, so my main goal to my dream in my career of animation is to be a master. A master to me is when I have the capability to do I want to animate without to much help. So, essentially a person who done so much that they don't have to go to videos and tutorials to understand something. However I do understand I won't know everything because there are so many things to know. For example, how comic book artist would ask someone to do a pose because they are fighting with a certain shot. Do you think this conflicts with what you said to never stride to be a master? thanks for your time!
@CharacterDesignForge
@CharacterDesignForge 6 лет назад
Are you talking about using reference? All artists use reference. New, old, good, inexperienced, use reference. It's not some kind of cheat. It's smart. Also, like I said in the video, try not to focus on the master side of things. Master means hardened brain, unable and unwilling to learn more.

Hello there. I don’t want to break the fourth rule, but when you said in another video about not needing to draw picture perfect to develop shorthands (from drawing heads and faces videos), but after you said #3, I’m just a little confused on whether learning exactly life drawing quality is necessary or not. Also, would it be okay to focus my learning on drawing bodies the way you taught us only in order to have some basis for us to change or build upon later?

i have gotten critiqued before and all the times that i have it is always something like "you should practice anatomy" and i ask the question well "where do i start" they never answer this and i try to anatomy and just don;t have any fun learning that kind of stuff because i have to find everything myself. I don't know i always try to at least give it a shot but it has gotten to the point i just tune out advice like that because i never feel like it helps me :/

A great way to get started with anatomy is drawing simple volumetric shapes over photos of nude models. Get comfortable drawing cylinders, spheres, and prisms within the contours of photos, then move on to using the same shapes on a separate page to construct from observation. Don't go for detail immediately, get the general ideas right first.
