I have a close friend that wanted to learn how to quilt and I've been doing this quilt with her. It's been such a positive experience that she's excited about the 'next quilt'. I really believe that having a good quilting experience is key to someone learning to love our chosen hobby/craft/art. Thank you Fat Quarter Shop for this series!
I really like the idea of the little planning board, it makes you do everything before sewing. I like how you position your pins. I am a self taught sewer as being left handed the old day school teachers didn’t like us lefties. I always pin when I sew but In was tiresome as I realise I was doing this in a very awkward way. You are my saviour. It’s been over twelve years since I sat at a Michener, but seeing you teach in thieve tutorials I’m going to quilt for the first time I love how the back of work is just as nice as the front. I am happy to see you see like this as I was told by my sewing friends I am too pedantic and that’s the reason why it took me three times as long as them. I think I will stick to being me 😀
Another great video Kimberly. So glad I'm doing the Ultimate Beginner quilt even though I've been sewing for a number of years. The hardest part now for me is choosing the 8 fabrics to use in this block.
Story! I'm using scraps leftover from another quilt for this sew along. I made today's block and decided one of these things was not like the others. The 6 1/2 inch squares were all flowers, but one was just too different to fit in. I had another print that I thought would "even" it out, but I didn't have enough to cut a six inch square, so, I made a template of the one I wanted to change onto the fabric I wanted to use instead. It was just barely wide enough to allow a seam and then I re-cut the 3 1/2 inch snowball squares, and sewed them on. Lo and behold, it all fit! Diagonal seams all matched and center seam matched! At this point, I'm not even sure I remember how I did it.....
Thank you, Kimberly! This series is so informative and fun! I have been quilting for two years and have learned some very good habits and skills watching your tutorials (how to follow a pattern was huge for me). I also corrected the mistakes of rocking the iron back and forth so I don't stretch or warp my block and pressing with my fingers first and then ironing to avoid duck or puckered pleats! You are a great instructor. Thank you!
I am making a baby quilt using this block (36 blocks). It’s all cut out and ready to sew. Thank you for the great tips on pinning, sewing and ironing. Thanks Kimberly and FQS!!!
You always do a great with your videos. Enjoy watching even though I've been quilting for along time but I do pick up new tips from watching. You can say I'm old school quilter . That's how I had learned.
Great video! Looking forward to making this block. I am enjoying this series and all the tips I am learning and doing. My sewing has improved immensely. Thank you!
great tips Kimberly! With snowballed corners this big I like to sew another line 1/2" from the sew line so when I cut the corners off I have a new 1/2 square triangle.
Hi Lynn, yes you can join the quilt along whenever you like, the videos and blog posts that go with them will be here forever for you to watch and enjoy!
Anyone else have this problem? I am completely new to quilting and had to flip the blues around bc I did not have enough of the dark blue to get a 6.5 square. I wish the previous videos would have made me more aware of where I cut so that the kit worked for the whole quilt. Now I am worried about the last blocks. :(
Hi Andy, we recommend reaching out to our Customer Service, they'll be able to help you out with both advice on cutting and helping you get more fabric if you need. You can reach them at service@fatquartershop.com or Toll Free: 1-866-826-2069.
Hey, Andy! Welcome to the quilting world...you’ll love it. As a beginner there is no way for you to know but it helps to go through the entire quilt pattern to note fabrics and sizes. Lots of kits come with a cutting guide that actually shows you what and where to cut on each fabric which is extremely helpful. I’m pretty new as well and in my experience most DO NOT have a cutting guide. Unless you are doing a HUGE kit (Lori Holt!) it’s pretty easy to figure out though. For the larger kits I enter everything into a spreadsheet and then sort it by fabric/sizes needed. Sometimes you have just one little piece from a fabric and a whole ton left over. One thing I have learned is you have to improvise… Pick another color and go with it! It will be beautiful!
@@FatQuarterShopTX thanks for replying, i just swapped the 2 blue colors and that worked for me. i am loving all the experience i am getting from doing this quilt. NOT a flying geese fan, lol!😕
It would be helpful at the beginning of the series to have a diagram of each cut within each fabric piece. It doesn't matter in the beginning of the quilt blocks on how you cut as it was not shown, but it could potentially set you up for failure in the cutting later in the quilt. I am working on this quilt with my mom, and both of us are not beginner quilters, and still is frustrating to not have a map of the cuts. We can't substitute any of the fabrics because we don't know in the future what the cuts will be and how it will be affected. Can this be changed for the future to help future quilters?
Could you add the blog post/map diagram into the kit when you buy it? I’m a beginner quilter and I’m finding this now that it’s too late and I’ve already made bad cuts, resulting in not enough fabric for the pieces. :( Thanks
I was thinking the same thing Norma. I always keep my needle in the down position when I raise the pressure foot, otherwise I could possibly skip a stitch.
I was late starting to jump into this project and didn’t start until you hit block 4 and I love participating. The only thing I wish I had done is start by ordering the kit. You always have a knack for putting together the cutest fabrics. Will you be doing a Christmas sew a long?
Kimberly does have a Merry Mini Christmas Quilt she did in July. You can still find it on the Jolly Jabber blog. I got the supplies, but I’m waiting until mid October/early November until I start on it. You might still be able to see the videos on you tube😊
I just have to ask, how many bottles of nail polish do you own? Do you just paint over the colors or do you re-do your nails like every day? I do love your quilting, and this is a great series for all quilters.
Getting ready to do this block tonight! 🥰 I still really don’t understand the labeling. Is it by the size of the cut or the fabric? Just when I think I have it down I confuse the crap out of myself
Hi Laurie, the alphabet fabric labeling is by the cut of fabric, per fabric. The same size cut may also be a different letter because it’s used in a different spot in the block. As an example, if you need (3) - 2” squares, 2 may be used for star points and would be labeled (A). The other 2” square might be used for another unit in the block, and it would be labeled (B). If those same cuts are needed on a different color fabric, it would repeat those same letters. Hope that makes sense!
I am a new quilter and I wish this tutorial had included how to face your fabric if you had a pattern. I ended up having all my fabric facing in the wrong direction and having to cut off the wrong seams.
I could never get away with drawing the lines while on the design board, they'd be a mess. Most beginners probably would need to move to the mat for that step
Question. I recently purchased a Creative Grids Folded Corner Clipper and it looks like I could use it on the B pieces in this block, correct? (instead of drawing the diagonal lines)
The ruler I had to purchase during this Pandemic is only 6 inches wide. How do I make adjustments when trimming? You refer when trimming to that particular ruler that is 6 and 1/2 inches. By the way, this has really been fun to do. My first quilt and it is keeping me busy with all of this quarentene time!!
Hello Gayle! The pattern is available in the description box underneath the video. Here is a link to the pattern: www.fatquartershop.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/UBQ-BlockSix-Pattern.pdf
