I like the way you illustrate cold what you are going to do before you forge hot. makes things a lot clearer

Thank you, that was actually suggested by my nephew who has recently got into tong making and said that really helped him out.

Ya he's pretty infatuated with tools already! He has a mechanical mind already, there isn't a door knob or any kind of latch that is safe around him 🙂

Just found your video and subscribed! I am fairly new to blacksmithing. I have been a woodworker/carver/carpenter most of my life always wanted to try my hand in blacksmithing, I just never had the right place to set up shop. But I do now, Just finished building my shop this past march and have been hard at it ever since. I will keep an eye out for future videos from you as I am constant in my quest for knowledge. Learning is my number one passion in life, with such little time in this world, time is precious and should be spent sparingly!!

Congrats on your new shop, that is exciting! I hope to get back to videos this winter, but I am having trouble with carpal tunnel right now, potentially looking at my second surgery for it. I think that is more due to horseshoeing than blacksmithing, but I have to take it easy on my hands nonetheless for the time being. I do have quite a few other tong videos though if you are interested. Thanks for watching!

@@FarmsteadForge I know all about it as I also have it. I wear large leather bracelets on both my wrists. I am scared to get the surgery as I am also a vary talented guitar player. I have a few friends who have has the surgery and lost dexterity in there fingers. For me, it's not worth the risk. Thank you kindly for your reply. I wish you well and look forward to future videos.

@@briantremblay9157 I know what you mean, I used to be a pretty good fiddle player but I'm pretty rusty these days.

@@FarmsteadForge Oh sweet! Hope you find your way back to playing. For me, No matter what I do in a day, I have to play, even if it is for 20 mins or so. I just upgraded to a new 66lbs Vevor cast steel anvil yesterday. I built a new stand out of 2x10s and used a chain to secure it down. I was using a homemade RailRoad track anvil equipped with a hardy hole, pritchers hole and a horn. It worked great! I have well over 200 hours on it. However, I got a few large orders this week for some work, I needed a larger work face and a better horn then what I had. It's sure not my dream anvil but I am happy with it for now. I will always keep my eye open for a better one. But they are quite costly here in Canada. I Am kinda thinking about going to my local farms to ask if they may have one in a corner somewhere for sale... Hope you heal soon and get back to what you love!

What steel did you use for your handled punch used in this video?
@FarmsteadForge

Great job Jayce on the tongs and video. Your apprentice at the end needs to help more I see,,,LOL. I think he was saying the quench bucket water was low. Glad you're back in the shop and I know you can't wait to get more done in the new addition. Looking good and keep it up!!!!~

Very good video, I'm gonna have to give this one a crack and replace some of the other crappier v-bit tongs I've made!

I too have some tongs that need replaced - it's fun to get a nicer set on the rack! Thanks for watching.

Thanks! My goal with these tutorials is that someone with minimal experience could take their phone out to the shop and watch it step by step and then have a set of tongs by the end.
