In this tutorial I take you through the steps on how to forge old school bolt jaw tongs. On these particular tongs I made the jaws V-bit style but I also show how to make them round as well.

I really liked this video. I am just getting started. I use a coal forge I can use as much advice on using a coal forge as I can get

I'm glad you liked it! I took my coal forge out of my shop several years ago and I haven't had a chance to get it plumbed back in yet. I haven't forged with coal too much, since I'm a farrier I've mostly used coke - it's a little different ball game than coal. Thanks for watching!

Greetings Jayce. Thank you for your excellent videos/tutorials. Never seen you using a flypress in your videos. Out of curiosity, do you intend to get one? I like to see how you restore and put back to service your blacksmith vices. It is cool to see you approach the pile of vices and pick one to repair 😎! When do you plan to show us the next blacksmith vice repair video? Cheers

Thank you, I enjoy putting out helpful tutorials. I don't have a flypress but I would love to get one! I have my eye out for an old one but just haven't searched real hard yet. The next vise I want to do is the one with crooked and uneven jaws. It will be a time consuming fix so I'm hoping my schedule will open up in January and I'll be able to get it done. Thanks for watching!

Very nice pair of tongs Jayce, I also struggle with bolt jaw tongs. I'm gonna try your method though. Merry Christmas!

Why would you choose to use a bolt jaw versus the v tong?
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge 7 месяцев назад
The bolt jaws are designed to hold something with a large end while working the opposite end (like the thumbnail picture shows); whereas the V-bits wouldn't be able to grasp that same material. I do prefer the V-bits for most things, but the bolt jaws do have their place for certain things. I hope that makes sense!

..they'll do the job. is that first pair you showed at the end made from a pair of nippers?
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge 7 месяцев назад
The antique ones are Heller bolt jaws. The other pair are ones I hand forged, I like to make mine from scratch.

I always get worn out drawing out reins by hand, and my tong projects stall out.
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge 7 месяцев назад
Ya that was me too, that is why I built my power hammer! Maybe I should do a video on old school tongs with jump welded reins?
@Vikingwerk
@Vikingwerk 7 месяцев назад
@@FarmsteadForge actually, the one i’d like to see is the split reins, where the two working ends are formed on opposite ends a piece of flat bar, which is split length-wise at an angle to separate the two tong halves and form the reins. I’ve seen diagrams in books and a few photos of the steps, but never seen that one done.
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge 7 месяцев назад
@@VikingwerkThat's a great idea - I have done that but it has been a long time! I might have to try my hand at it again at some point.
