Learn online, design it yourself and have 130nm fabrication done, all from your console at home. Just a hobbiest here but- thats amazing :)

yes! It's easy for me to get complacent about it, but when I pause and step back it continues to strike me as an amazing opportunity for 'normal people' to get an opportunity to make silicon at the nm level!

Hi can I ask where do you learn it from? I'm having trouble on where to start since you actually need to design your own RTL before the rest in OpenRoad. I was looking for something simple and easy to fabricate like a chip in a toy etc
@_azaad_
@_azaad_ 2 года назад
I am seriously considering it. The only reason I'm hesitant is because I am very intimidated by analog hardware. Still, I'm quite comfortable with digital design and I'm desperate to make my own IC, that sounds like the coolest thing ever!

Then use off the shelf ADC and DAC ? Or are you on a 20$ budget and in a country with embargo like every second commenter on RU-vid? Why not start with FPGA?

I'm currently studying in the domain of electronic at college ("cegep" where I live), but recently I've failed one class that will delay my graduation of one year. So I'm thinking of using that extra time to gain more experience while working part-time. Recently I got curious in the restoration of retro consoles, but obviously many parts are no onger made. Through this course, can I learn on how to recreate some of these parts if I can't find an modern equivalent that is compatible.
@ZeroToASICcourse
@ZeroToASICcourse Год назад
I don't cover much mixed signal or analog design, so as long as the chips you want to recreate are digital then it should be no problem.

There is some course that does not start from scratch, for which we already have experience with IC and RTL. maybe one that covers openlane, related opensource tools (simulation) and the caravel usage and simulation environment for the shuttles?

I believe there is a short version, it was mentioned in one of his earlier videos
@ZeroToASICcourse

I did run a short course that covered just part 4 & 5, but it was much harder to sell tickets for. I'm not sure if I'll run it again. So I would recommend you go on the normal course and just skip part 2 if you already know RTL. Tickets will be available next week from the website.

Hello sir, I was wondering if I could possibly make an intercom with a trimline phone to a speaker aux output and when you dial a certain number it plays a tone and when you dial another nm it plays a tone and your voice comes over the speaker?
@ZeroToASICcourse
@ZeroToASICcourse 4 месяца назад
Probably, you'd most likely want to use external ADC and DAC

As of today there are only 32000 people that are curious about designing DIY chips, maybe the other numbers to have at least 50000 are not yet informed.

Can I design LCoS chip? Liquid crystal on silicon. Used for small displays for wearable devices.
@ZeroToASICcourse
@ZeroToASICcourse 5 месяцев назад
You might be able to design it but we currently only have a 130nm cmos process to actually fab the chips

How long would it take to make a Micro Chip without laser machinery? Like only Hand Tools used.
@ZeroToASICcourse
@ZeroToASICcourse Год назад
The transistors only work at a very small scale, so hand tools isn't really an option. But you could build a cpu out of discrete transistors. Check my recent monster 6502 interview for an example
@ArneChristianRosenfeldt
@ArneChristianRosenfeldt 8 месяцев назад
People used hands to build the tools for the tools. Just read any Time Machine thread. There is not much to cut short. Though I think you can avoid the invention of the laser. They use electron lithography for masks. They had used Hg gas discharge lamps for lithography.

I may not be very tech-savvy, but I'm prepared to invest in my students for this course. Can you clarify whether the curriculum covers the creation of custom microchips for electronics or focuses on chip design? I'd appreciate a detailed response. Thanks!
