Listen to Rachmaninoff and then Lang, then fast forward to 16:05 where Nick plays it, and then start from the beginning. I transcribed this and could play it, 20 years ago. In retirement, I'm learning it again! Fabulous! And a great sounding guitar for it to.

Nick, whom we know by now as both a superb and versatile guitarist and a scholar of jazz history and its participants, gives us a beautiful demonstration and nuanced explanation of Eddie's famous arrangement. That guitar is gorgeous -- sonically and visually!

Thank you SO very much for those very kind words. Your appreciation means a lot to me. Ain't that Galiano something? It's also a very smooth playing instrument. Now if I could just get used to the lack of fret markers 😉

Fantastic lesson. Alway wanted to learn this thrilling number. Hope it's not a blasphemy to play it electric.

You could be a much better player if you used all four fingers p, i ,m and a (not your pinky ) of your right hand.

Thanks for the advice! I am plectrist, not a fingerstyle player and am always learning how to better my technique. All said, I was trying to emulate, to a great degree, what my ears suggest Lang was doing on the original sound recording referenced. It's quite likely he was not well tutored in classical technique either, although he handles the middle section with a lot of authority and consistency.

No, he’d be a different player, one who sounded less like Eddie Lang and some of the other plectrum greats. This is like telling jazz and blues players “you should play a nylon string guitar instead of a steel string”. This is a tradition that is just as valid as classical guitar, and over a century old at this point, and this is a great lesson in that style.
