Jo Sarojed my 20 year old daughter also started sewing this month since we have so much more time at home with the quarantine. She has made ten masks for friends and family using fabric her grandmother mailed to her. (All of the 100% cotton was sold out at Walmart! Lol) BEST WISHES to you! Just wanted you to know another young person was learning a new skill. You’ll be so glad you know how to sew for the rest of your life! Great job!
I have a vintage dressmaker model number f a v 900 I want to know how to thread the bobbin that goes in the front under the foot anyone can tell me that
I'm a 14 year old girl and I really want to start sewing my own clothes and sewing things for my family. Tomorrow I'm going to try it out for the first time and I'm really excited! Hope everything will go great :'D Wish me luck and thank you~!
Just wanted to say a big thanks! 52 year old male... never sewed a day on my life... finally bit the bullet and started learning, with this video. Made my first napkin tonight and couldn't be prouder. There's going to be lots more of those to come! Thanks again for the great instructional video.

What I love about growing up in this digital age is the ability to learn anything whenever you want. Obviously I can buy a book which I enjoy a lot, but there’s nothing like being able to watch a video or find a course online whenever I want.
I get distracted by all her tattoos wondering how painful they were all. Those heels also look painful to me. those socks are so cute, yet I would never were them with heels. que sera, sera.
Who new a video from 4 years ago would have a quarantined desperate mask maker excited to sew! Beginner here 🙋🏻♀️ the very first video that ACTUALLY explains things we can understand all around! Thank you Gretchen!
62 yr old Married Man who has ALWAYS had to hand stitch everything I've ever mended and taught by my Mom (she raised 7 of us on her own!) I recently acquired an older desk sewing machine (Janome Harmony 8080) that did not come with directions or power cord (given to me and didn't know what I was getting when received!). I have since located an aftermarket power cord and downloaded the manual for the machine! I will be coming back to your video to hopefully get me through the beginning stages to start getting my various projects completed!! Thank you in advance!!
I just have to say that I am so enamored with her hair and her overall look. Very pretty. Plus I love how detailed she is with her descriptions. Best beginner video I've found so far. :-)
Thank you for this comprehensive introduction. My great-grandmother was a seamstress for Judy Garland (Dorthy in The Wizard of OZ) but she passed away in 2008, what I wouldn't give to hear her sewing tips. 🥺😭 Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
This is the best how-to video I've found. I had ZERO sewing machine experience before watching this. Thanks to this video, I was able to sew some curtains for our pop-up tent trailer just a few days before leaving on a 3500 mile road trip. Thanks so much for a concise and easy to follow video.
kaitlyn chan I love it. That whole era. I hope Gretchen teaches us how to see those dresses and zuit suit's! I hope I spelled that right. I love her style of teaching!!
My mother passed away three years ago in May and she left me her sewing machine. I knew a few tricks from watching her but this has helped so much in a time where an indoor weekend hobby is needed. Thank you for being detailed about the machine and the sewing process in general ❤️. Btw love your pinup model style 😍 it gives this important trade a lovely vintage flare.
Did anyone noticed her matching floral print high heels 👠... I jst love ur style Gretchen...and ths is the best beginners guide..i really dnt even know the abcd of sewing machines bt after watching ths nw i hve understood a little step by step😘😘😘😘
I’m a 12 year old girl and i’m trying to start a business and instead of having someone sew the clothes I designed, I want to sew it myself. I really hope my plan works out and i’m so nervous to start this business.
I hope everything is gone well for you!! It’s always a bit scary to start a business, especially so young and something new, but I am so sure that if you keep at it for a long time that you will become very successful ❤️❤️💙💙
48 year old fella here, just did my first cushion cover after i dug out our old 1950s Brother machine. t-shirt next, i'm hooked. This is what lock down has done to me!
I'm genuinely impressed with just how helpful this video is. Found almost the same machine that you are using by Kenmore at a thrift store for $20, didn't know how to use it. This helped me a lot and now I'm confident to tailor my clothes with my machine. Thank you so much!!! Makes buying clothes a lot easier when you know you have backup!
I’m excited to start learning how to use the sewing machine. 58-year-old male, never Sewed anything before but I’m willing to learn and excited to get started. New subscriber.
Enexaya, I'm sewing masks to help protect (at least a little) against COVID19. Not what I thought I'd be making, but I'm learning quickly. Thank you for asking. Also, I can make a scrunchie in five minutes or less now. 😁
Your video is right on time. You caused me to think about my mom, who sewed too. The times that we received new clothing that she made for us to wear are some of the brightest moments that I can recall of being with her when she was alive. You are giving others a tool that they can use to create bright moments with their friends and family. What a wonderful thing to be doing for people. The soft whirring of that machine is like music to my ears.
Great video! Retired welder learning to sew...to say I'm out of my comfort zone is an understatement. But, the other day I managed to thread my machine and wind a bobbin, and, today I learned how to pivot when running a seam. Never know, if I live long enough, I just may get good at this! Thanks again.
Thank you for the fabulous introduction with excellent command of the language and use of analogies to everyday tasks (driving a car, flossing teeth, etc.). You have inspired confidence for me to take the new machine out of the box!
I’d like to see the traditional singer sewing machine... My grandma used to have one and she is such an expert at sewing!!! Watching this makes me miss her a whole lot. 🤎
Slow clap at 6:18 when she defines the often-debated ideal direction of a toilet paper roll all nonchalant like this hasn't been a common fight in families since the beginning of TP time...
Today I bought my elna explore 340. Very excited to start stitching. Thank you for your presentation that convinced me to buy an new elna machine. Greetings margje from South Africa
This was one of the best video ever. I finally learned what I was doing wrong with my bobbin. She is so precise in her teaching. I was wishing the video would never end. Thank you
I have long thought it would be interesting, rewarding, and fun to learn to sew with a machine, but I didn't know where to begin. Your video is awesome. I'm both a teacher and a filmmaker, so in both of those areas I salute you for making such a pleasant, informative, and easy-to-follow lesson. You are very impressive! You have inspired me for sure!
I’m a mom and clothes are so expensive especially for my husband so I wanted to learn so we can wear what we want without spending ridiculous amounts of money
I do a lot of sewing, reproduction vintage project videos and always love to see others encouraging new (and not so new) seamstresses/seamsters(? lol). Great channel!
I already know most of this but my mom hasn't explained all of the basic parts I've just seen her do this before! This really helped me understand the mechanics of it!! I've been sewing awhile and I'm planning on finally making a dress that's Captain Marvel themed!!😁
Im 17 and have been hand sewing since I was 12 but not a single drop of machine experience but now I get to learn because my grandmother left me her sewing machine from 1942 :)
I bought a new sewing machine 6 years ago, and it's never been taken out of the box. I had no idea how to sew. I read the instruction manual, but still couldn't figure out how to start. This video was SO helpful! Thank you!
Here I am, 13, homeschooled and bored all of the time ! I thought that I would try to learn as many things as possible before I go into high school!I decided that I would use the old sewing machine that my sister had and learn how to do that ! If I have time to waste I will saw !
I'm 13 and I use cosplay as a way to deal with my mental health so I need to learn something quicker than hand-stitching and I'm happy to see someone else doing it too :)
I've watched quite a few beginner sewing guides and this one has really made the most sense, even though I have a different machine. Thank you for explaining why/how the little things are supposed to work not just "do this, do that".
Good on you :-) I saw this Video and it really helped to just learn the basics of the sewing machine as well. I saw this other video and I got really mixed up at this one bit because she just said: "Turn This Thingamabob" And I was super mixed up by this, but I agree with you. :-)
My mom taught me how to sew when I was little. I learned on a very old school machine she purchased in the 60’s 😳. Time for me to get back to the basics 😃
I just bought my sewing machine today, I have trouble setting it up, after I watched you video, my set up went so smooth now, thank you so much, love to watch your videos, you are such a good teacher, every steps are so clear ❤️
Havent finish watching this video but i want to say THANK YOU for uploading this, so far this has been really HELPFUL, dont want to say a lot, I've been trying to find a video to help and but this is the only one thats gotten me to understand so far
I want to thank you for taking the fear of learning to sew, for me at 72 years old to start and I will be watching your videos because your videos are easy to understand.
This is hands down the best video for beginners!!!! I have had a sewing machine for years and never had the time to sit down to learn how to use it. This video has me sewing and making a difference during this pandemic! THANK YOU!!!!!
I love Gretchen's instructions. I am an absolute beginner and have followed this tutorial faithfully - now a few weeks in, making pretty napkins in French floral cotton for my daughter's engagement dinner party, which the guests will take home as a keepsake from the night!
This is the most basic instructional video I've seen and EXACTLY what i needed, since I've never sewn and i know absolutely nothing. Thank you so much 💞💞💞💞💞💞
Yes i really think, if you want to sew, she is the one that can really make you feel confortable enough to sew anything, so lets get this sew along done. Helen Harris
As many Americans, we find ourselves locked in at home with a lot of idle time. I had purchased a gently used sewing machine about 3 years ago, and my wife “suggested” that it was time to figure out how to use it. I started out by reading the manual, always a good place to start, but am now looking to fill the gaps between the particulars of my machine, and what to do. I love your instruction style, your calm manner, your camera positioning, and a simple project to allow a beginner like me build confidence. I do hope that you have a kitchen curtain video, as that is the project that my wife has charged me with tackling, and it’s actually a bit terrifying. Thanks for showing me how to sew a straight hem...hopefully I can replicate it in due course.
I'm watching this 7 years later, what an awesome video for beginners like myself. I makes wreaths in my spare time and want to start making wreath attachments some very creative ladies have shared. This was a tremendous help and so precise! Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I used to see everything by hand because I was too afraid to even touch a sewing machine but it takes so long so eventually sewing things for fun wasn't fun anymore. My friend bought me a sewing machine for Christmas one year in an attempt to help me get back into hobbies I had long forgotten but whenever I'd look up tutorials, they were all with different sewing machines and had parts that I didn't have or didn't have parts that I had so it was intimidating. My friend has asked me to make some clothes for her new baby and I'm honored by the request but I don't want to hand sew. Now I can finally take it out of the closet and try again ☺️. Thank you!!!
@@BJGvideos Aw this comment brought back memories, thank you. I actually ended up knitting all the clothes because I still couldn't manage the sewing machine 😂
Subscribed!! You are awesome!! I just saved myself $45 from going to Joannes' Fabrics and taking that sewing class! Thank you so much! My ten year old even enjoyed watching you and is going to also subscribe from her channel.
+Katherine Sillaman EVERYONE clearly understood what the OP said, gaijin was just being sarcastic saying that "defiantly attending" sounds "aggressive"
Thank you a million times!!! I am considering buying my first ever sewing machine. I'm a Granny ''New Bee''...no experience with a machine at all. I felt intimidated so, I just hand sewed everything. Now with this crazy Pandemic I find my hands don't hold onto a needle as well as they used to. Although, I have been getting by and have made quite a few masks, I feel all would be quicker (along with better stitching) if I switched to a machine. Thank you for the info about finding a mentor...never thought of that. I like the way you explained and demonstrated your instructions, your voice was very calming and inspiring. New subscriber!! Update: Well it is June 11th...today my sewing machine arrived. I am looking forward to learning how to use it all because, of this video that has been such an inspiration.
Hi, Mandy. I’m a granny too, and aside from poor sewing my freshman year of high school, I did no sewing except a few lessons I took last year. I have 2 experienced seamstresses willing to help me learn. I have a pattern, fabric and thread to make a pillow. I wish us many hours of happy sewing!
Fabulous tutorial 🎀 thank heaven for you! I cannot even count how many AWFUL sewing tutorials I have had the excruciating privilege of watching on RU-vid this morning.. XoXo Sarah
Omg I'm must be stupid because everyone is commenting how easy it is by watching her. I'm so lost. I probably need to watch this like 20 more times. I want to learn.
Thank you for this awesome how-to vid! I tried and failed at setting up my machine a few years ago. With your incredible detailed instructions, I am going to try again!
In high school I opted to take shop class instead of home ec because I thought I would always have a chance to learn to cook and sew, but when would I have the opportunity to spot weld something? Well, fast forward 30 years and I still have not learned to sew. I found your video, got out the sewing machine that I bought but never had used, and got started. This video is so easy to follow - thanks so much for making this fun! I can't wait to move on to the next video!
I can’t stop staring at that pin cushion, it looks so neat and needles looks sharp. Also, doesn’t show any holes through the fabric. Can we have a tutorial?
I watched this video something like 4 months ago right before I got my machine (from family) and then never took the time to use it. Came back to it today because I knew it would be easy to understand! My machine is quite different but I was still able to get going thank to this video :)
Even though I’ve been sewing for 64 years I would recommend your videos to anyone who is interested in the art of sewing I learned by watching my mom when I was 6 and have been sewing ever since you make it very easy for the beginners who are interested in sewing I came across this video by accident but even thought I’ve been doing it for years it was very refreshing love your look your style is beautiful and you have your shot together and I love it keep doing what you’re doing and happy sewing
