In Music Theory, Interval awareness and understanding is the most important foundation that you need in order to understand how scales and chords work together. If you're not familiar with words like "Perfect Fifth, Minor Third, Augmented Fourth, or Major Seven" then listen up! In this lesson I will teach you Simple Intervals, and then for you keen learners I also talk about Compound Intervals which are intervals that extend beyond the first 7 or Octave.

It's not boring at all, infact you are doing a wonderful job catering towards intermediate guitarists. Very useful stuff if you want to take it to the next level. Keep it up with awesome lessons like these. Would be great if you could make a follow up lesson on applying the intervals to create poetic melodies. (Mateus style)

Brilliant stuff. I've been playing for some time now, and have always wanted to understand music intervals. I've searched far and wide to know what you have shared, and the way you have explained it, definitely made sense to me.

wow can it be true? a video of theory that is actualy well done and easy to get while teaching intervals and what is minor, major, and the numbers etc... all in one video why has no one done this before? lol

Great video Darryl! I had a question. Is there a difference between octaves and registers? If so, what is/are the difference(s)?

Thanks! From my understanding, "an octave" is referring to a specific note, "within an octave range" is an alternative way of saying "within this register of notes". Think of a school classroom where you have to tick your name on the register. We'll only select students were on that register. Same principle with notes. It's not a words that I use often since it's not a very specific term

It'll make more when you apply it to chords...such as 1, 3, b7, #9 On a guitar,...there;s only so many ways to can make that chord becuase you only have so many fingers. Dont try to play the guitar like a piano,,,These instruments are designed different. They both can do different things ..the other one can't. Both make limitatations....pro and cons...advantage and disadvantage, The #9 is in the second octive It's easier in E...because you can let the two side strings ring You basically want to play the lower three notes...and play the note in the second octive with you pinky..or shuffle with your pinky.. b2 ,9, #9, 10, 11...ect You can hit the 13th on the E string (C#) E............................. B..........,............#9 G.................b7 D ............3...... A.................R E..................... You need to learn the intervals and shift accordingly. example....Harmonic MAJOR = b6.....shift the 6th down 1/2 1.........2........3..........4..........5..........6...........7..8 1........2.........3..........4..........5.b6..................7..8 or Lydian #2 1.............#2..3.................#4..5.........6..........7..8 lydian b3 1.......2...b3.......................#4.5........6...........7..8 lydian dominant 1........2........3...................#4............6..b7........8 mix #2, #4 or lydian dominant #2 1..............#23..................#4.5.........6..b7.........8 lydian dominant b2 1 b2.............3..................#4 5..........6.b7..........8 Phrygian dominant 1.b2.............3....4..............5..b6..........b7.........8 phrygian b4 1.b2........b3..b4................5...b6.........b7..........8 loc b4 1.b2.......b3...b4........b5........b6.........b7..........8 loc b4, bb6 1.b2......b3..b4..........b5.bb6..............b7.........8 lydian augmented 1........2........3..........#4...........#5..6...........7..8 lydiian augmented #2 1.............#2.3..........#4.............#5.6.........7..8 lydian augmented #3 1.........2..........#3........#4..........#5.6.........7..8 These modes derive from the other 8 diatonic parallel scales.

Here's the list of those 9 parallel scales Pusing down from MAJOR to min... You wanna grasp it or get used to it in ONE KEY at first becuase you can push DOWN from MAJOR to minor..visa versa. in other words...from C MAJOR to C min AND from Amin to A MAJOR at the same time....You'll simply have MORE OPTIONS to modulate. shift Keys,...ect....It's just getting FAMILAR with different sounds and INTERVALS....They all work other. It;s actaully EASIER to PLAY and write music ...once you know these scales... KEYS are JUST PITCH....you can use the fretboard like a SLIDE RULER. You cant do that on a piano..... If you can play in C MAJOR/Amin....YOu can play in ANY KEYS. Those cool sounding movements or Intervals you played.(without know music theory) that were OUTSIDE of the MAJOR scale will make more sense...or you'll know you can do it and identify them for what they are... Or...you might just need to shift a note ON PAPER...not what you played of DIFFERENT SOUNDS you created. Plus it's EASIER to EXPERIMENT... becuase you'll have the different INTERVALS...FORMULA. as a TOOL to help GUIDE YOU..... Mix/ blend....DO ANYTHING YOU WANT... The MAJOR scale is just the first one...and used as a REFERENCE. 0 scales....7 modes each. You dont have to learn them over might,...as long you know these scales exist. You'll learn them as you go...if you run out of ideas get stuck in a rut or...get bored of playing the same old stuff. b6 = Harmonic MAJOR b3 = Melodic min b3, b6 = Harmonic min b2, b3= melodic min b2 (N6) b2, b3, b6 = Harmonic min b2 ( N6) b3 , b5 = melodic minor b5 b3, b5, b6 = Harmonic min b5......( III of Hungarian MAJOR) b3 #4 melodic min #4.......( Lydian b3 = IV of Harmonic MAJOR) b3, #4, b6 = Harmonic min #4......aka Hungerian min You can reverse the process from A min to A MAJOR b3, b6, b7 b3, b6 b3 b6 Hope that makes sense. Modes/chords will INTERSECT in MORE PLACES...make its SMOOTHER to SHIFT KEYS..easier...( to Multiple keys and back) Or you can play just the notes/mode.chords in each scale by themselves...They all sound DIFFERENT...resolves DIFFERENT. They're SUPPOSE TOO. CANT get different results by playing the samething over and over again...You'll go NUTZ if you do.lol

Because they don't have a major or minor character, they are simply perfect 🙂

@@DarrylSyms does that mean that they are not sharpened or flattened for use in any other chords? And, why the word perfect? Wikipedia says: “In music theory, a perfect fifth is the musical interval corresponding to a pair of pitches with a frequency ratio of 3:2, or very nearly so.” If it’s “very nearly so” it’s not exact, which wouldn’t fit my definition of perfect.

Oh they can be sharpened or flattened, but they’re still not maj or min when you do that. The whole ratio thing is a bit too nerdy for my understanding, but often you’ll find in music that certain aspects are “very nearly so” to accommodate for a better/western understanding 💁‍♂️🙂
