a study tip i learned for languages is to put sticky notes of vocab + their translations on the items of those words (like putting a note on the fridge with its translation in the language you're learning), this helped me with french :)

I think a better idea is to get in the habit of recalling the word when you see or use something. Sticky notes did not work for me at all :(

omg she’s so right about just speaking without the idea of perfection. i have a friend that i practice korean with and she had told me that i had made the most improvements when i naturally let myself speak in korean rather than constantly think about the fact that i’m speaking korean lol. kinda just letting the conversation flow for connection to the person you’re talking to rather than filtering everything you’re saying to be perfect because you’re trying to improve. just let yourself make mistakes and improvements will happen naturally, it helps with making the progress more fun and relaxing

Also, native speakers make mistakes all the time in any language! Half of the slang that me and my coworkers use (in English) is incorrectly used Grammer that would make no sense to a non-native speaker

That’s the hardest part to break through & why a lot of people give up. Once u get the momentum going it becomes easier! When I got frustrated or overwhelmed I just moved on to another topic & eventually after so much exposure to the language & repetition it became easier. Taking an online course helps too.

i recently learned that a lot of 1st and 2nd gen immigrants experience something called receptive bilingualism, which means we can understand what's being said to us in our native language but are unable to articulate and answer back in the way we want to out loud. the only way to overcome this is to practice speaking it more ! obvious, but takes a lot of effort. you've encouraged me to start studying again nina! we're in this together 👍🏼

Im Mexican-American. Growing up my dad spoke mostly in English for me too, even though we was fluent in Spanish. He was born and raised in Mexico. The only difference with me is that my mom would not let me speak to her in English. Whenever I spoke to her it had to be in Spanish. Therefore, I am fluent speaking, writing, and reading in Spanish. My mom always knew the importance of me knowing how to speak Spanish. I’m super grateful for her for that 😊

My mom would speak hiligaynon, my dad would reply in tagalog, and we’d reply in english. so having all that jumbled in my head left me feeling sooo so unconfident when i went to the philippines for the first time 🙃 just diaspora things 💘💘

In 2018 i learnt how to write hangeul because i wanted to write in my diary without people knowing what i wrote. I never learnt korean, but i kept writing in "coreañol" (which is spanish written in hangeul). Right now, after years, i got re-obssesed with kpop (special thANKS TO MAMAMOO 🛐🛐), so i decided to try once again after a lot of attempts. I feel i'm going in the right way right now. In 2020 i started learning french and it became my third language. After that experience, i know what things i should do to keep me learning. This time i do think that, because while studying grammar and vocabulary everything seems so clear, i think i just got out of this "it is too difficult" block i had for so many years. Good luck everyone, languages are super awesome

When you say '4 정거장' (16:10), it's not '사' 정거장 but '네' 정거장. 5 정거장, 6 정거장 are also said to be 다섯 정거장, 여섯 정거장(Native Korean number). Two Korean number systems... it can be very confusing but 화이팅!!! that's a really good point to make where you speak from for each language (as someone who used to do musical theater and singing) there is a distinction in singing from your head voice and your chest voice that you use as you move through the octaves/notes. I never thought to apply this to language but it makes so much sense.

I find it so weird that people assume that someone's race means they must know a language. It seems to happen in the Hispanic community a lot with Spanish (and very frequently Hispanic people criticize people who aren't even Hispanic just because they "look like they are"). You grew up in the states, it's ok that you aren't fluent in Korean and it's amazing that you're learning and being able to connect with your culture! I'm currently trying to learn and think anyone learning a language and connecting with a culture is awesome! (I'm just White-America, but I really like Korean culture and the language so I'm learning)

What can mostly relate with what you have with Korean. I have the same with polish. But only my mother is polish and my father is dutch. So I grew up in the netherlands and spoke dutch all the time at home and school. And I really struggle when we go yearly to Poland in the summer and winter. And I am even better in English and German (because I watch english YT all the time and watched German kids-TV-shows) then in Polish. Maybe I also just do some kind of Polish study session before we go back to Poland for the summerholiday.

Can you pls make a video about the whole procedures you have to go through in order to get to Korea? I read that you don’t need to quarantine anymore if you’re fully vaccinated

Hey Nina, I just want to say that I'm in the same position as you. I'm Korean American and never grew up speaking it and barely could conversate until my college years when I decided to learn it myself. I think taking the step to learn a new language is a big achievement and you should be proud of yourself! Your Korean is actually good. Much better than a lot of Korean Americans that I know. Learning a new language is not an easy feat. Even speaking conversationally is not easy especially since in America there's not a whole lot of ways to get immersed in Korean. You are doing a great job, give yourself some credit (:

I'm a Brazilian learning Korean as my 3rd language, and when you said you feel like you're speaking through the head, it was so real! I mean, In Portuguese, we have a ton of nasal sounds, and you feel speaking from your head. (It could definitely be about the intonation of the sentence). Like using the ~은/는 in sentences, for example. In Portuguese, we keep using the ~ão/ões in some words. Both of them are nasal sounds.
