Great Martial artist. It takes a lot of training & when execute, a lot of 120 % concentration in double sword, very dangerous to both the artist & the person standing by

I barely know katana, but I don't think you're supposed to dual wield them. Just like every other long swords, you don't use two long swords together. If you want to dual wield, use a long sword (preferably a bastard sword) and a dagger. Or another way is to use two short swords together. For example, I heard that in japan, there is a martial art where it uses two short swords together to dual wield.

Also, each style have their own techniques called "koryu" (old school). Which could go from 30 kata to even 100 kata. But watch "the samurai workshop"'s setei videos (Mae, ushiro , ukenagashi, tsuka ate, kesa giri etc). Another note (really important)!!!!: In every samurai martial arts they use hakama and a gi. There are no belts which indicates your grade! The hakama is also supposed to be worn in a specific way. When a person weres the hakama there should always be a plus looking thing at the persons stomach (Like this: +)

This is an insult to Japanese martial artists. He is a dancer and amateur in martial arts. In the first place, the katana is never rotated, and two katanas of the same length are never used.

?.... Good Stage Craft or Stage Swordplay, I imagine. But not really martial art.

His right hand grips the sword wrong. Obviously not traditionally trained in Katana in any koryu, while he is talented, he doesn't know katana.
@GoodwillWright
@GoodwillWright 8 лет назад
+Shane Muir His grip seems to be emphasizing control rather than cutting technique. It's just simply how he adjusted to ensure effectiveness for his particular "style". His strikes also emphasize more power than it does technique. Regardless though, if you told this guy to start doing things traditionally, if he so chose, he'd probably pick it up in a heartbeat.

+GoodwillWright I wasn't critiquing him, it was more pointing these things out so that people new to learning the sword understand there are differences between show and koryu. I did compliment him in my first post for his skill. Just to assume that since he is good at this, he would be good at a koryu is not correct. I've met many skilled gymnast type martial artists who couldn't fight and took a very long time for them to learn combat.

lalala100 Fair point. I just also like to point out for others that just because someone doesn't practice traditional styles, doesn't mean they are a lost cause and should be belittled, or underestimated for it. And, he may know katana. But he can't use traditional stances or grips due to the differences in achievements. Just because I like to twirl around a hockey stick, doesn't mean I don't know how to play hockey. Point is, you can't assume someone "doesn't" know something just because they don't show it. Okay, I digress, you can assume it, but it doesn't mean it is true. I personally, think what he does is cool and all, and shows great control, coordination, and motor skills. Something that even some martial arts can't teach. But personally, and practically, I prefer speed, and technique over flashiness. AKA, what you'd probably learn in Kendo and Iaido. Now I don't mention Kenjutsu because I don't have experience in that. Finally, before you assume that I may be "attacking" you or anything, I'm not. Just bringing up general points on the subject and are not necessarily directed at your comment. Because quite frankly, there was nothing wrong with your original comment.
@lalala100
@lalala100 8 лет назад
+GoodwillWright I get what you are saying, but I'm coming from a Koryu Kenjutsu background in Kukishin Ryu. I used to do this kind of stuff also, but I wanted to learn an actual katana or tachi based school. I just want newbies looking into learning sword to understand that this isn't how a katana is used and there is too much telegraphing and openings to what he is doing to be useful against someone that only trains how to use it to kill with.
