Although I’m not Puerto Rican, I’ve lived in PR for three years, and appreciate all food types. Hola Marta! Excellent video and beautiful touching story especially regarding your mom. You sure have accomplished a lot from raising homeschooling twins, doing it solo at times and missing your husband when he got deployed..not an easy childhood either. Yet you have a fighter fearless spirit. You took on each challenge and camoe out a warrior. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful video. What touched me most was how you and your family took care of your mom. ❤😢 I loved the pictures of you reading by her bedside ❤. God blessed you with a beautiful heart. I have a mom with dementia and that runs in our family tree. Its brutal to watch anyone let alone a loved one fade away. Shes still alive at 86 but I mourn her every day. I miss her laugh, her jokes, her spirit. We grew up in LES so i am familiar with PR Adelas . Mom and her were friends and went to PR together. Adela was golden! Loved her food. I have yet to taste a PR meal as good! I started cooking as a new mom.. i ruined so many meals as my mom wasn't a fan of cooking so i rarely watched her cook. She threw together whatever she had to feed 7 kids. I thank God daily for videos like yours and other cuisines that have helped me develop into a decent cook. I love feeding people too. Hi Malta, I'm a 65 year old Puerto Rican male from Bronx, New York, I've cooked basically all my life for my family, I learned cooking from my mom who never allowed anyone in her kitchen while she was cooking but as a young child I was very quiet and still so she allowed me to watch her cooking from the farthest chair in here kitchen. I, too, took care of my mom until she passed at the age of 92 on December 1st, 2014 . I love your culinary knowledge and the intelligent way of expression. Your recipes and skills are the bomb. Marta, I fell in love with your vibrant personality the moment I watched your video "Let's Make Pernil". I fell out when you tapped the pernil with the knife and said "that's it". I have been following you ever since and am enamored by your take on food, cooking, family and life. It doesn't have to be that dramatic, we just gotta treat each other right, do right by each other and ourselves and have a good filling meal in the process. When people are eating they aren't being mean, talking smack or arguing. Like you and your, I'm sure amazing husband, Hector; I too am a US ARMY veteran. I spent 10 years (1981-1991) mostly in Infantry Units. So a huge HOOAH from me to you both. You made me home sick for NYC with your mannerisms and speech. I was born and raised on the LES (Lower East Side) so I'm very familiar with Adela's and try to get back as often as I can. Unfortunately my mobility isn't as great as it used to be but other than my diabetes my health is pretty solid. I miss the cuchifrito, real avocadoes (haas will do, but not even close), culantro, piragua in the summer, a knish, a bialy from Essex street, anything from Katz Deli, but mostly though just a good old street waterdog with mustard and onions. I loved NYC for the same reasons you mentioned. I could travel and taste the world's cuisine all in one place because the neighborhood's were so immersed in their respective cultures. You have come to embody every woman in my life (Mom, Tia's, girlfriend's) that I have spent time in the kitchen with prepping and cooking great food while having a great time laughing our butts off in the process. The last part probably due to all the coquito and rum that was consumed. LOL So thank you for all the content, for just being you and representing all the amazing sides of yourself. Mostly for for triggering those awesome memories all the beloved and fun women I have had in my life. I wish you and your family much health, wealth and success. keep it up, cause I'll definitely be watching. Sorry for writing a book. It all just spilled out as soon as I started.

I came across your Cooking Channel and fell in love with the authenticity and the realistic scenery of your studio. Most people view cooking shows that showcase an unrealistic kitchen and a show that's overly scripted. That can lead to a total chaos when they try to prepare any recipe they recently viewed. Thank you for that. Also as a Rican myself...(not trying to show any favoritism because of that), I am amazed by your experiences and your history that brought you to this place of "Becoming a Chef". I also am so grateful that you showcase PRIDE in both of your ethical backgrounds and most of all...being a human and an American. You touched on Military background and that of MS and of course...being a mom. I hope you can do episodes on each such as Latin or Ethnic foods for MS, an easy to prepare meal for your kids, a typical military mean - Latin style. As for The Military portion...there is a huge population of Military vets who can't afford to barely eat or suffer from PTSD so easy, simple, inexpensive meals are hard to find that are not only Latin based, but are healthy and has that home feeling. OMG thanks for giving us more insight about you and your family Marta. This sounds crazy, but I served in the Army with your husband when I was stationed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. At the time I was SPC Rivera and your husband was SFC Rivera, the NCOIC of Operations. Wow! I became the Hospital's CSM driver/assistant because Mr. Rivera recommended me to our leadership and Chain of Command. He would always tell me to get a haircut because I would use gel in my hair all of the time LOL. I never forgot Mr. Rivera throughout my Army career. I think when your husband found out that I was a nuyorican he took a liking to me and helped progress my career while I served at Ft. Bliss. God Bless both you and your family. I’m not a nutritionist, so I don’t have the medical credentials to make a cookbook based on dietary supplements or restrictions. I do believe in cooking and baking from scratch as much as possible, but I don’t ascribe to the whole “healthy” eating concept. I believe food should be enjoyed in moderation and without guilt. I would do a cookbook , though, yes.

I loved this video and learned so much about who you are. Such a beautifully done video. I did almost 20 years in the Navy and raised two boys by myself. That is what I’m most proud of, raising my kids while simultaneously raising my kids BY MYSELF! Women are so strong and determined. You’ve accomplished so much in your life and you are still young. Thank you so much! I'm doing surprisingly well with my MS. I'm currently having an issue, but it's not too serious. Just the stress of working through the holidays I think. It was really hard for me to be diagnosed at 32, but oddly, I wasn't shocked since I was now the 4th person in the family to be diagnosed with it. I'll add shepherd's pie to my list, though. I'm 26 and I gotta say, I love your back story. I like that you don't mind answering these questions! too many people don't like sharing, which is understandable. I applaud you and your husband on the very long marriage as it very rare for that long of a marriage, in today's age 2 hours of marriage isn't even possible lol!
It wasn't a great time for people serving in the military back then. They didn't have the same support that service members do today. I'm grateful for their service.
One of my biggest challenge with cooking, or at least experimenting and trying new things, is the fear of failure resulting in food waste, especially with rising costs of groceries. How do you handle that?
I have to admit that my answer is biased because I usually know what I need to do to fix a recipe to salvage it. I think that, with very few exceptions, failing at a recipe is usually the result of not reading the recipe thoroughly and getting a feel for what you're about to make before even gathering the ingredients. I always tell my friends and family to read a recipe at least 3 times before even starting it. It will get you familiar with what's to come, enable you to make sure you have everything you need to make the recipe, and allow you to circumvent issues that may arise because you missed a step. Always follow the instructions given in the recipe. All to often, I have people say they decided not to do something and it caused their recipe to come out badly. Lastly, things happen and sometimes recipes are poorly researched, tested, or written. Because I grew up with food insecurities, a recipe has to be damn near poison for us not to eat it. I just explain it to the family and we eat it anyway. In the end, dousing something in ketchup always helps.
great advice about reading a recipe at least 3x and I also replay different variations of the same recipe on RU-vid to see what changes I would like to make to make it my own.@@SenseandEdibility

I went to the black part of Puerto Rico. So when you say you black and puerto rican? Do you think that puerto rican Aint black? And there are light skin puerto rican. And dark skin puerto rican you know from the slavery era
(21:52) I took care of my sister for over a year till she past away of cancer. It was one of the most toughest times in my entire life. (emotionally, physically, spiritually) The experience taught me so about myself, about love, about compassion, about life general! I didn't know I even had it with in me to do so !!! If I had to do again, in the beat of a heart I'd be there! No regrets at all !!! Thank you for reminding me of all the lessons I've learned through out that time !!!🥲
