A quick cheat: Whereas the key of F only had 1 flat, (B flat), in the key of F#, B is the only note NOT sharped. Then, whereas the key of B flat had 2 flats, (B flat & E flat), now in the key of B, they are all sharps EXCEPT these two! This pattern follows through the rest of the keys. Learn the flat keys, & you automatically know the sharp keys! ♡
@@Somanybeats its a trick to learn only 6 lines here instead of all 13. Highly recommend having the videos chart handy for this . First compare lines of F vs F# but ignore whether its a flat or sharp. Its all the same order of notes. F G A B C D E. what this guy is saying is if F has one flat, F# is opposite, it has 1 normal note( rest are sharp). In other words, if one scale has 4 sharps, the other will have 4 regular notes. Or if 2 flats, its other scale will have 2 regular notes. Compare B vs B flat, E vs E flat etc.
I've been a musician for over thirty years, and I've never seen major scales explained so well. Great job, sir! I intend to show this to my daughter. :-)
Kudos for the video content! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Rozardner Inspiring Chord Reality (probably on Google)? It is a smashing exclusive product for how to play guitar scales without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my old buddy Taylor at last got amazing results with it.
Thank you Scott! drop in the form at ernestchapman.com and I'll give you guys free access to one of my courses at magic-music-method.teachable.com/p/learn-scales-fast
I have been struggling to learn scales for 4 years. I don’t know why I’ve never thought about it like this before? You have made the whole concept so simple. Thank you.
Another great thing about this chart, column 6 holds all the relative minor scales. (minor scale that uses exactly the notes but starts on a different one to major) e.g. C Major > Relative minor = Am F Major > Relative minor = Dm and so on! Very useful for composition and writing songs. Amazing video, thank you 🙏🏽
It might be obvious to some but for those wondering, the scale names for each row are as follows: C maj F maj Bb maj / A# maj Eb maj / D# maj Ab maj / G# maj Db maj / C# maj Gb maj / F# maj F# maj / Gb maj B maj E maj A maj D maj G maj C maj
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about play best piano online course try Dalz Perfect Play Discovery (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my brother in law got cool results with it.
I got half way through with understanding then got lost! I will come back to this and thank you for posting it! I am just a slow learner but appreciate your efforts!
I'm preparing for my ABRSM exams after 20+ years of playing the piano without music theory. You, Sir, saved me a great deal of headache. Simply awesome, thank you 💙💙
I’m a complete beginner at piano but at 62 I now have the time and willingness to practice. I’ve come a long way in just 2 months but still didn’t have a clue on scales. This lesson was terrific for me at this early stage. Thank you!
Omg thank you, it’s always the most simple advice that’s the most helpful. Like literally, “I have to use all the letters and can’t reuse them” just made everything click. I also noticed instead of traveling in fourths through the scales, you can travel in fifths and isolate the 7. Thanks again!
Thank you. I appreciate you sharing for talent, art, knowledge, and tips. I am looking forward to downloading, printing, and getting to the fun part Thanks again!! Blessings of this day to you!
Never learned this way, just learned from muscle memory but I really liked your explanation! Mainly because it gave me a fresh perspective on the scales.
I “get” all this because in my journey to understanding music theory I’ve written this down myself, but I never saw the “magic 4th column”-AND you explained it in 10 minutes! AWESOMENESS! I will be sharing this video with any music beginner I have the privilege to work with. THANK YOU!
Been a musician for close to two years now and I’ve never really learned theory cuz it was always so hard and confusing but the way you explained this now makes everything I play have more sense to it 👍🏼and know where and why I play certain things
fantastically helpful vid, ernest - thanks so much!! i watched it a couple of days ago, and i've drawn the chart a half dozen times to fix it in my head. i agree with you - memorising without seeing the underlying logic of the scale progression (something i doubt i noticed before) is so much more difficult and confusing!!
Three million cheers for Ernest Chapman! An absolutely, stupendously simple way to demystify the very foundation of music theory, that is, the major scale in every possible key. You have definitely earned a like, a subcriber, and some shares from me brother!
I stopped about halfway in the video since I only needed to know the circle of 4ths. However, just from what I watched this video is so helpful. I learned that trick in no time. I got it like that. What a great teacher.
Wow. Merci beaucoup for this. I've been a musician almost all my life. Well actually, I started piano 2 weeks ago after my retirement. I've been watching videos, and saw one on the Circle of Fifths, so I had a nice drawing, but you explained everything about that drawing. You bet I'll be coming back to this. Invaluable.
I'm doing a Music ATAR and I know the very basics of notation but one of the requirements is to memorize scales. I've been having a lot of trouble with this and omg you just made it so simple. I kid you not my jaw dropped all throughout this video as I was shocked how simple it is. 😂😅 Thankyou so much!!
I've been stuck on that circle of 5ths for 3 weeks and couldnt figure out anything... few minutes on your video, boom eureka! Thank u so much, I can finally move on to the next step in playing piano
