Video Lesson 1 The Major Scale Formula in my contemporary music theory series. Facebook.com/kennisrussell Twitter.com/kennisrussell ~-~~-~~~-~~-~ ~-~~-~~~-~~-~
Kennis Russell it's the BEST. I just can't thank you enough for taking the time and explaining it so thoroughly and not making my head spin or making me feel overwhelmed. THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you! I've been through this before but it was always rushed and I didn't fully understand it, but the way you explained it and gave numerous examples has helped me to memorise it!
I agree with another reviewer, the best video I have seen in the explanation of this. The writing it down and diagramming it out for us is extremely helpful and not giving us fancy stuff and jargon beginners cannot grasp. Thank you very much for sharing.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Kennis! For years, I have been noodling around on guitar and taken several lessons, but have always stumbled into areas of confusion. After watching this video, you give the basic fundamentals their due attention. I realized that my previous teachers or personal study had glossed over this very basic, but crucial step of properly understanding the mechanics of the Major Scale. Now, the fog is starting to clear. It was also really helpful to see this laid out on the piano instead of the guitar fretboard (which adds quite a bit of complexity). Cheers!
I agree with all the comments on the beauty of your simple explanation of keys. I am a guitarist who has played for nearly 50 years and yet my mind goes fuzzy when musicians speak of keys and 2 flats and 3 sharps and whatever. I never had any idea how they knew that or its importance. Now, in the span of a few minutes, I get it. I'm going back and re-watch and listen. Hated being an illiterate musician.
I was in a crunch this morning having to memorize and perform all of the major scales on the keyboard this afternoon and this was the best this has been explained to me. Thanks so much!
I just remember that 3 and 7 are half steps in every major scale. Thank you. this was good for the details, especially on sharps and flats being consistent in the scale.
I have a test today on major scales, and all that jazz. And I would like to personally thank you for helping me on this test i am about to ace. My teacher is brilliant, but he has an issue with portraying the subject material in a way us beginners can easily grasp. You just saved me. Thank you.
By far the best explanation of this. I have watched many others trying to figure this out but you explain it perfectly and I can't believe how simple it really is!!
I've read several articles and have viewed several videos and tutorials of basic music theory and Not once,(until this video) have i seen somebody speak on the differential place of sharps and flats as to where they fall on a major scale. Much appreciated.
Not sure if this helps anyone, but a mnemonic device that might help to remember the intervals of a major scale: "We Walked Home, While We Walked Home" or WWHWWWH -- where W = a whole step, and H = a half step. Dunno, but this seemed to help me a bit in music theory
Adambomb9069 thanks. Doesn’t make that much sense to me, but I guess it’s a good pace to start and can be altered to suit ones needs. I guess I’ll use ... We walked home with what we had. Cheers.
For years I struggled trying to understand the concept of the major scales. For this reason I became musically stagnant. I started playing by ear as a child but that can only get you so far. This video helped me fully understand how the major scales are written and how to use them. Thank you so much!! 👏
Thank you so much, for ages I've been trying to visualize this formula in my mind but it's never quite settled, this really helped. Looking forward to watching the rest of your lessons :)
I dont know how anyone coukd not like this. You taught it perfectly. Im trying to refresh my memory, and you brought the major scales to my mind quickly.
Hey thanks so much man I've struggled with this for years but the way you explained it just clicked with me. Really goes to show that explaining something different ways is necessary to actually get through to the whole audience
Wow, excellent explanation and visualization! Thanks to your method of visually writing things down I understand this quickly. Thank you for taking the time in making these videos.
Super well done. I had a handle on this for the most part before the vid but watched out of curiosity. Learned several 'key' things via this simple and effective lesson. Thank you !
Thank you so much for this class. I am in college taking music class, and the lessons from my teacher are very vague, but after watching this video you helped me so much to understand everything in less than 20 minutes while I have been trying to figure this out for the past 2 days. Thank you again
really you can't imagine how much this video has helped me and I really don't know how to thank you enough , before this I had no idea what those major and minor scales are , and hope you make another minor scale video
Sharing this method with my sharing. Still hands down the most helpful example of this formula, awesome to refresh my memory as I watch too! Awesome stuff @Kennis Russell
Thank god... This was something i struggling to understand till now... May god bless you Kennis.... having knowledge is one thing and the ability to express is a totally different thing.... and you have both....
the very first video I've found that's actually good for beginners.. a lot of other videos on RU-vid we find is not for beginners.. thank you sir..for such a nice explanation..
Holy crap, what an eye opener. Some of this stuff was hard to wrap my head around and you explained it so well. As a ukulele beginner, what really helped me was having another tab open with an ukulele fretboard diagram. Now I understand so many things that I've been told - something like "the strings are tuned to G,C,E,A". It never occurred to me that the fretboard is simply a layout of half steps all the way down, beginning with that note on the open string. Also, I learned the C Major scale by memorizing where to put my fingers on the frets, based on a video, but I wondered how I could continue into the next octave(s). Now I get it. It's absurdly obvious now LOL Thank you! :)
I am a vocalist and started music with a recorder and trumpet as a child. I taught myself piano and upon gaining a piano teacher they always thought I knew more than I really did. Hence the reason for the major gaps in my theory knowledge. Hence, here I am attempting to teach my son basic piano but knowing I need to start with theory first and particularly the formulas....great explanation! Thank you..... I'm relearning piano the right way....hopefully an old dog can learn new tricks! Thanks. I'm a visual learner so this really helped me!
This is VERY helpful as I am just beginning to seriously study music theory and learning guitar and piano!!! Much thanks to you for this video lesson!!!
Just came here to refresh my memory as I am planning to take up piano again. So good you can find these tutorial these days. Was playing piano during my childhood, and I'm definitely not an expert, but I remember we learnt music in the Kodály system... you know, 'The sound of music' kind of stuff... (do re mi fa so la ti) Once you learn and understand that, all this becomes clear. It's abstract, but you can base everything else on it, as it's not directly connected to the actual notes. You can easily move melodies up or down once you learnt them in the "do re mi" structure. We used to have to figure out the scales on our own on paper based on this, like a math exercise. I really don't want to be a know-it-all, but it might really help ppl understand scales if you have problems.
Thank you for simplifying this lesson for me / us. I like your style of teaching - visual plus narrative. But the most important aspect for me is you went straight to the point and nailed it. Before watching this I found it all rather confusing. This has really helped me and I am going to watch your other videos as I am studying music so it is a serious learning tool for me. Once again - thank you. :)
Thank you for this. I loved how you explained the whole/half step! Im currently at a University, and you explained major scales better than my instructor did.
Your lesson was extremely helpful! It was easy to understand and I learned a lot today!! Thank you for helping me through my journey, keep up the great work!
I've been singing publicly for more than 25 years. Yep, I've had lessons. But I've never had someone instruct on music as succinctly as you! I'm absolutely downloading the notes for these lessons!
I am a freshman and doing pit. Although I'm doing auxiliary percussion I was told to memorize the scales for mallet percussion. This video was so helpful in helping me memorize the scales.
This was so informative! I have never understood this concept and your explanation was so clear. I am 55 an learning how to play the violin and really want to understand the theory behind scales. I subscribed because I appreciated your explanation.
Thank you, I am a beginner, but I am very much interested in understanding the theory to learn the right way. This has been extremely useful for my scales practice.
I understood what the easy key of C scale was but was wondering what all the other scales were so I could try and practice them. What a find this video is. Can’t wait to work on it. Thank you.
Hi Kennis. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and explain the major scales clearly. I wrote down everything you pretty much wrote (I felt like I was in high school again). Lol. I will continue to follow your teachings. I have liked 👍🏼 , subscribed ✅ and hit the little bell. 🔔 Thank you again.
