Wait a minute... Let me say "Wow" right back at you :-) 7 languages?!! Really?!! Speak, read & write?. I need to know more how you did that. Feel free to get in touch with me on my blog. Thanks for your comment.
O wow ....I heard Sinhalese for the first time and I could understand so much of it. There is so much of Sanskrit in the language. I have started to like it and will learn it soon.
Rajesh Khilari True. Similarly I understand many "proper" words in Hindi (like what's used in Bahubali) because of the Sanskrit base. Here are more Sinhala phrases for your new interest. Enjoy: lazybutsmartsinhala.com/freebook
Dilshan - I discovered your blog when planning to go to Sri Lanka on honeymoon. Now Mrs D and I are actually here on our honeymoon and practising using bits of the language. It even raised a smile from the immigration official at Colombo earlier today when I thanked him in Sinhala 😀 Thanks for making the language so accessible. Belated congratulations on your recent-ish nuptials too!
Thanks buddy and congratulations to you and Mrs. D too. Very happy to hear that you put those words to good use. Or else, what's the point, right? Thanks for sharing that. See you again on the blog.
Bro no offence or anything but he might have smiled because you pronounced it wrong or differently with a weird accent (this is why im scared to talk to locals at my new school my family moved to lanka) i wont speak to them but at least i know what they are saying
Its not Arayan Language. but some words are close to sanskrit or from sanskrit. it's much older than sanskrit. its purely originated in the island. www.thetoptens.com/best-languages/sinhalese-805842.asp
@@lazybutsmartuniverse yeahhh...quite a few. Namå is Nam. Karannå is Kariye Kaamårå is Kamrā Næ is Nahi Karunaa is Karunā Samaa is Kshamaa Isthoothi is stuti (with slightly different meaning) Subå is Shubh In Hindi
I am from Maldives and we have gdh atoll and most words are every similar.... my name is shairaf we say it ma namaku shairaf it's the same kinda.... our islanders say our atoll language originated from sri Lanka.... wat we speak are same to wat Sri Lankan spoke a long time ago
It is a bliss to listen to Singhala. It is so much like Sanskrit because obviously there is an overlapping of cultures, but Singhala is closer to Sanskrit than many SI languages! A little bit of Malyali accent/tone could be noticed and some words which are similar to Kannada and even Hindi. The script looks like Kannada/Telugu script. I am digging this.
amith0tube i feel the accent is similar to Malayalam. The writing does not look so much like it. I feel it looks more like Kannada since it is more round( Sinhala ). I am from Mexico, so my native language is Spanish. If I did not know the difference between Sinhala and Malayalam I would surely confuse them. At least for us foreigners, those two are the languages that sound more similar.
Why is it so different from Tamil? Is Sinhala based off Sanskrit? The words are completely different. I speak Malayalam and it is somewhat similar to Tamil so hearing sinhalese was so surprising for me. If anyone knows pls comment
sinhalese originated initially from the Bengali Migrant prince called Vijaya and later the Pali(Magadhi) language of Northern India influenced heavily for the development of Sinhala language, later inclusion of Sanskrit words had shaped the modern sinhala language..further there are tamil ,Portugese,Dutch loan words are also ..nonetheless this helped to enrich the current sinhala language in to very mature level where we can express feelings very well
Wow , thanks for replying to my comment! Its true your an excellent teacher. I went to Sri Lanka last month, I used the phrase's that you teach and everyone understood and said my pronunciation was spot on. Im going back next month because I have a new friend there so I have been practicing some more. I think I need to buy your full package so I can impress my friend even more. His English is better than my Sinhalese that's for sure. Thank you very much and best wishes to you. :-) 😊
Can't thank you enough Dilshan for these videos We live in the UK & I am trying to teach my youngest daughter Sinhalese & it's becoming increasingly hard because the 3 siblings speak to each other in English. However, we have started watching your videos now Senya loves practicing the dialogs at the end with me. thankyou so much!
Hi Dilshan My mom, grandparents, aunt, and uncle are from Kandy in Sri Lanka and my mom always speaks to them in Sinhala so I wanted to learn how to speak Sinhala too so I been watch your video's for a year now and they been so helpful now I almost know how to speak fluent Sinhala. Now my aunt lives in Colombo an she is an actress in Sri Lanka
Relim Tech Hi! That's awesome that you found my videos helpful. There''s more material at my website, since you seem vert motivated. Oh, wow, an actress, huh? So now I know someone who knows a celebrity :)
I live in Canada and I have Sri Lankan classmates/coworkers. Have been curious about their language so I am here. I think it's awesome that you are spreading Sinhalese. :)
Bo ho ma stoothi. You are a diamond dude. I used what u taught me and everyone understood. I'm going back next month because now I have some Sri Lankan friends. I will buy your full course. Cheers Dilshan
Im a Maldivian.. I dont understand sinhalese but I see a trend with Dhivehi.. Dhivehi has four dialects.. The northernmost dialect is standard dhivehi and is most modern.. It is very different from sinhalese as it very much arabised.. But the southern dialects are similar to sinhalese slightly.. For example they use the word "mate".. Its interesting
Very interesting, Zeehan. I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing. BTW, how did you end up watching this clip? I assume you're not interested in learning Sinhala?
Im Sri Lankan but i live in britan my grandma and cousins and almost all of my family lives in Sri Lanka and its kinda weird that i dont speak sinhala.thanks now I'm really impressed with my progress and now can almost speak whole of the language little bit more!!
Excellent resource. Thank you Dilshan! I have been learning Sinhala for some time now and am a lazy student. Your resources and teaching style are first class and really help. Mike.
Thanks so much, Mike. Very kind and generous of you to say that. You'll find more resources at my site. Here's a good starting point: www.lazybutsmartsinhala.com/free-sinhala-online-course/
Thanks for your sharing. These videos have helped me a lot during the time I am here in Sri Lanka. Hope I can create some videos like this to introduce Vietnamese to Sri Lanka people here.
Tanwir Ahsan Hi Tanwir, when you find the time please send me an email (you can get it by going to my site) as I’d love to know more about these similarities. Thanks.
Many many thanks for your work, Dilshan! I went 3 times in Sri Lanka and I hope to return every year in this beautiful country. I have friends there, they are like my family and I would like to talk with them in sinhala. You do a great job! Greetings from France (Nice) :-)
I feel Sinhala sounds similar to Malayalam. Malayalam is the official language of the state of Kerala in India. As a native Spanish speaker who knows the basics of Sinhala, I can tell you that for some of us ( not native Sinhala speakers not Malayalam) both languages sound pretty similar.
Hey Kevin, yeah, do that and tell me how it goes. You might also want to check out the free copy of my phrasebook on my website. Thanks for the comment. Have an awesome trip.
your Videos are absolutely amazing! thank you very much! i'm trying to learn Sinhala, as my father is Tamil but my mum is Sinhala - so i use your Videos to improve my Sinhala, as i only knew Tamil before :) greetings from Germany!
Great attempt! Its easy to remember Badagini as it is represent a small town in Victoria. the name means "hungry" in the Sinhala language (bada is 'stomach' and ginnie is 'fire'), as the surveyor had spent some time in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and the survey team may have been without food when it arrived there. So cool
Thanks for the comment, and glad you like the way I've done it. I'm even happier to hear that you're using it to impress your boyfriend :) Let me know how it goes. All the best!
@@lazybutsmartuniverse will do sir :) really excited to say Bohoma isthooti a million times knowing how kind sri lankans will be! I have tons of SL friends here from Vietnam :)
Randy Hunsucker Thanks buddy and you’re welcome, glad you’re finding it helpful. Since you said you’re practicing hard, have you already tried the free email course on my site? www.lazybutsmartsinhala.com/free-sinhala-online-course/
Hi Dilshan.. Yours is one of the best language learning videos.. its very enjoyable and the learning process looks a lot easier with your videos , than I thought.. Thank you so much and I appreciate your efforts for making sinhala learning so enjoyable !!!
I've been trying all week to learn Tamil, but I can't even hear where the words start and end. Sinhala sounds much easier, I can follow what you are saying
Thanks, Nazmn. Glad you liked it and that you noticed the musical aspect of the sound of the language. More lessons here: www.lazybutsmartsinhala.com/free-sinhala-online-course/
Excellent job Dilshan .Do u hv a video on Sinhala numbers and amounts? It will b very helpful to do marketing and traveling in Srilanka. If you hv pls give me that number of the video. Thank you very much.
Hi Kala, sorry for the delay in replying. For some reason I stopped getting notifications of comments on my videos. To answer your question, no, unfortunately I don't have such a video yet but I'm working on it. Will let you know once it's released. Take care and thanks for the nice words.
Hi Dilshan Jayasinha, i downloaded your book and im half singhala and i can speak little bit but im learning. And i have learned some thing from your book and i just wanna say that it's amazing that you just take your time to do all of this to help any one from anywere to learn sri lanka
It is a pleasure to help people. Sometimes I'm helped a lot of people for no apparent reason .So as a result, I 've got it back. So I like to teach Sinhala in English. And I can learn English again too
nice video. great work. By the way, 'that' in Sinhala could also be 'ara' or 'araka'. When buying a bag/handbag, I imagine pointing to a bag/handbag at a slight distance and saying to the shop keeper, "araka keeyada" (how much is that). Pointing and saying "Eka keeyada" may well be just as easily understood, however, I get the feeling that it's used in the past tense. i.e. Shop keeper talks of a bag, then you ask 'eka keeyada' or shop keeper is holding the bag/handbag then you ask 'eka keeyada"
Dear Sir, I'm from Bangladesh. Capital city in Dhaka. I start learning Srilankan Language. If I learn from your tutorial can I communicate with Srilankan people. Pls write to me.
@@lazybutsmartuniverse already done... Could you make tutorial kind of set on Sinhala Grammer rules basic to advanced ,It will help both local and foriegn learners and also it will help our mother language popularity I guess. I don't about this lady is teaching Sinhala Hodiya ,but she's doing pretty good job , we should appreciate her too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8jm_xne2fks.html&feature=share I think we have to grow Sinhala Learning Community in youtube in more professional manner like you, also like others do for their own mother langs , such as English with Lucy, mmmEnglish and Learn English with Papa Teach Me youtube channels... wish you will be able to bring that initiative and change.
Could you please provide the words in the Sinhala script also alongwith the English transliteration? I have a bit doubt in respect of the pronunciations of the letters කෙ ,කැ and කෑ . Could you please explain the difference of the pronunciations of these letters with a voice clip including the sample words?
I came across your 1st five video tutorials by chance & have found them well crafted sequentially. I'm now able to speak simple Sinhala fluently. I'd value your free book of 100 phrases. Many thanks. Regards. Dr. Basil Jayatilaka, 59 Dorchester Avenue, Warwick, Perth, W. Australia 6024
the way you are teaching is bery useful to me to comminicate with sinhala guys. i thing that you have stopped teaching now bez i can not watch continousely all are here that i already watched. could you please update? thanks you very much god bless u.
I wish you sounded more natural in your speech, without being so sophisticated, because the native speakers are so natural, and speak with ease. ( except of course the kalu suddas who try to show they are different.)
Hi Dilshan and thanks for posting this video. I will soon be the M.C. at my nephews wedding. His soon to be partner is Sri Lankan and I thought it would be nice if I tried to say a few words in Sinhala for those attending on the bride's side. Is there any chance you can assist me with this? Thanks or bohoma isthoothi! :-)
If someone wants to learn Sinhala i would help for them. It is a pleasure to help people. Sometimes I'm helped a lot of people for no apparent reason .So as a result, I 've got it back. So I like to teach Sinhala in English. And I can learn English again too
