You are so correct; I learned from a textbook to say, "Quisiera... y, Le presento mi esposa..." Who really says, "May I present my wife..." in conversation? Thank you for pointing out not using "Quisiera" Muchas gracias for su ayuda!

A friend taught me years ago to say quisiera bailar conmigo. We were at a place where there was music and dancing. A lady came by selling pretty 🌹 red roses. So I bought one and gave it to a cute girl. Then I told my friend: “I sure wish I knew how to ask her to dance.” He knew Spanish well and told me to say: “¿Quisiera bailar conmigo? I wrote it on a napkin and kept saying it maybe 20 times. Then I took the napkin with me just in case. It was the first I really said anything in Spanish. Dang that was a great slow dance!

La maestra no dijo que no uses la palabra: QUISIERA. Ella dijo que tu evalues donde usarlo porque es muy formal. Tu libro te enseño bien, te puso ejemplos formales, solo eso. En México usamos quisiera con respeto pero con tus amigos practica algo diferente, con mas confianza. Saludos.

@@JuanMoreno-wo5yb In this context, we can use 'quisiera' because its formality gives it a more romantic tone. I'm so happy you gave it a try and managed to get a dance out of it. 😊

My girlfriend's parents are from Ecuador and speak almost zero English. She has to do all the translating when it comes to business related issues. I was fluent up until the age of about 6 or 7 then forgot about 90% of it. It's a long story. My mom still used phrases on occasion so some things were burned into my brain but I figured it would be nice to be able to understand her parents and also not always speak to her in English. Plus there are a lot of Spanish speakers from all over Latin America and Cuba where I work so that would be cool. Speaking to someone with multiple decades of vocabulary when I essentially have the vocabulary of a 8 or 9 year old is frustrating. I'll text simple sentences but often the responses will require looking up some words I don't know. Oddly, I tend to understand more what I read than what I hear. Spanish speakers may use +/-300 words but that's enough to limit a non-speaker from being able to communicate effectively. Not to mention the verb conjugations and proper use of pronouns. By communicating, I'm not referring to simple questions like asking for directions. I'm talking about being able to discuss day-to-day things. I often find myself saying sabes que no conozco todas las palabras que me dijiste no? We all have a good laugh about it. I'll sometimes watch soccer matches on the local Spanish channels. They speak about 100mph ans subtitles can't really keep up so I just listen. Some things I pick up most escape me. But it's entertaining because they get so excited as they call the game. Being able to recite what I just typed in Spanish would be nice 🤣🤣

Great advice in this video! One thing that helped me immensely was listening to Spanish language radio stations. I picked a couple of stations whose locale I knew from previous trips and started listening every day. Because I heard phone numbers, etc from the community call-in ads each day I was able to increase dramatically the speed with which I recognize number groups. The commercials, weather reports, public service announcements, and the talk radio programs also helped a lot. A bonus is now I am in to Latin American music!

Currently, I'm doing a secondary major with spanish language and can confirm that this is excellent advice. I'm not fully fluent yet, maybe a B1-B2, but this is the kind of thing that I've figured out in my journey of learning Spanish as a second language that has worked extremely well. This person would be an amazing college language professor if that's not what she already teaches. The way they teach foreign languages in American colleges is not always the most effective, so I think the Department of Education needs to start implementing this learning style into high school and college language courses.

Great advice! I love how you switch back and forth between English and Spanish. I learned Spanish "in the streets" (shopping, talking to friends, etc.) in Mexico. Now that I live in an anglophone country again, I practice by listening to music and podcasts, watching movies and series in Spanish, and practicing with language partners. After many years, I've noticed some gaps and am finally studying grammar. But I always advise people to do the other things as much as possible.

i just started learning spanish i am watching your video '7 bad habits " when you use the word , llegando/arriving, i understand that, also, from what you just taught, i understand now not to use a gerunds for the present, but to use the infinitives. the problem arises when you translate it into english as to how we english speakers would say it. i think that is a big mistake. i believe it would be more helpful if you wrote it in english the same way it is written in spanish. example, " llega a las 9"/ he arrives at 9. llega is not llegando and should not be translated that way just because thats the way we speak. i think that it would be more to our advantage if we learn to think in spanish the same way it is written. i realize that isn't possible in all cases, but some explainations can be given to clear up some impossiblities if there are any. when you say/ or write "te puedo pedir un vaso de agua? i am no so much interested in the translation as i am in how you are thinking and saying it. example, " you, i can order a glass of water." because it is contained in questions marks i know that it is a question. OR "te estoy hablando a ti." "you, i am talking to you. OR "no le quites eso a ella." "no it take away that to/from her." don't take that away from her. OR when i ask the question " can i help you?" in english that would be " puedo ayudar te?' but in spanish you say " you i can to help?" all i need to know is that it is a question therefore i need to reverse i can to can i. then i have " you can i help?" translates to " can i help you?" i hope i haven't been too ambiguous or long winded. cheers bert

He estado vs llevo vs andar .......... how about some tips on how to use those more naturally in Mexico... i had someone tell me "he estado estudiando español por un año" sounds unnatural and it is more common to use llevo..... your "llevo enferma..." sentence confirms that they most likely were correct (and they were a native spanish speaker also, but not from Mexico).

That's a great idea! We use 'llevar + gerundio' to express the amount of time we've done something and that person is right, it does sound more natural to say "llevo estudiando español por un año". Natives know many more words, of course. But many of these are seldom used. For example, even if you're not into horse racing or art, you probably know lots of words regarding them. But you might hardly ever use them. Mostly you'll just talk about the same things repeatedly with coworkers, family, etc.

@@laurierend We use more words than we think. Likely a range of 500-1000 words. We need a certain foundation to talk about topics in general. Think of the nouns, verbs, adjectives and conjugations.
