Here are the Chord & Harmony DVDs mentioned in the video: www.joedocmusi...
This is part 2 of 3, don't miss part 3: • Learn Surf Lead Guitar...
In this part, I go over adjusting the typical chord changes used in a blues to find useful chord progressions for a surf tune. If you find these kind of tips helpful you will like our Chord & Harmony Guide DVDs. www.joedocmusi...
They are chock full of ideas along these lines, and the lessons are more "composed" than these informal youtube videos - that means more focused and informative lessons!

Thanks SO much for shooting the vid with that angle!! I can't tell you how helpful that is to me! I'm a total beginner and every video I've tried to watch shoots straight on and I have to look at it, pause it, figure out What fret and all that crap. With this its like I'm looking at my guitar playing it. I'm a surf maniac and have been wanting to learn how to play guitar forever! Thanks!

One thing I have noticed on You Tube is how easy it is to give misinformation about history, post it, and suddenly it becomes the new truth. Rock roots is no exception, however well meaning guys are. Thanks for "truth to the roots", Joe.

THank you so much for this lesson. I must say though. i've been playing guitar for 8-9 years now, and what you just said and taught people is what kept bugging my head as a guitar player (not just for surf music... these tricks are good for most of the genres) and you just taught me so much in 15 minutes. This is seriously the best guitar lesson i ever had. Thanks so much!

www.joedocmusic.com dude your a great teacher ive only been playing guitar a year and ive recently been getting my head around the hard stuff.i.e blues scales and now surf have to say its hard to learn but when you get it its so satifying what guitar and effect pedal you using ? im guessing a fender guitar ?
@joedocmusic
@joedocmusic 9 лет назад
Ryan Williams Hi Ryan, Yes, that's a Fender Strat. I think I had a fuzz pedal on, with the guitar volume rolled back a bit, for a classic tone, and then into an analog echo pedal. best, joe

Cool - with the Nighthawk you can split the humbuckers, so definitely do that for a single coil sound. Go for a Fender amp, or one in that vein, with a real spring reverb - modelling amps don't real cut it (IMHO) for real surf tone. I was using the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue in this video. For most surf tones, plugging straight into the amp is the way to go. Sometimes a compressor is cool for clean solos (I use an MXR Comp), as well as a fuzz or overdrive (Maxon OD808 is great) if needed.

Great little lesson again. I recognize the used scale for these doublestops: mixolydian. That's what's used often in country also. (together with both major and minor pentatonic and / or major and minor blues scales) Keep up the good work!

Hi Brian, I have my Strat set up for .11's I prefer thicker strings in general, although I wouldn't recommend you go up to .12's if you're used to .09's, for example. Go up 1 or two gauges for the sake of both fingers and the guitar! IMHO, tremolo picking on the lower strings (a surf staple) sounds better on thicker strings, as does a slightly higher action than is currently in style - this ensures that notes can ring clear when you play with a strong pick attack.

That first progression is tricky. You can play E minor pentatonic over it, which sounds typically surfy for the major chords but dorian when you play it over the A minor. It's really just changing key when it hits the A minor, though, so the most successful lead would probably reflect that. Did you have a melody for it when you made this? Update: It's in part 3! Cool song! You nailed it.
