The consistency of a product makes a huge difference. I have used both Sarco putty and Abatron wood expoy and they are both a pleasure to work with. Seriously, other products have turned projects into a miserable experience.

For stained wood (or to prevent scratching the wood), be super careful if you use a putty knife to put the putty down. I personally will use my fingers and use the putty knife only to smoothe it and shape the corners.
No, the oils in primer react with the linseed in the putty. Linseed is a natural primer and best paint right over gently since it will be soft for months after. Latex is the best performer in the modern era - make sure the whiting aka Calcium Carbonate powder is blown off gently right after dusting or it can be a weak point for paint adhesion
