I'm going to love this series. Thank you... I notice that you will often notice a strike then you wait a couple seconds before setting the hook. Are you just giving the fish time to get the bait down? Are you waiting to see if line moves or feel weight of the fish? Appreciate the tip Edwin

I’ve been trying to save for a good Megabass shakyhead rod. Not sure if I can now my son has been excepted to fish at a local JuCo. HS has about being one me with gas prices, tournaments and gear. But hoping one day to get the right set up. One rod I have is medium heavy, the other is a good St. Croix but it’s 7’ light/fast. I want either 6’11 to 7’2 medium. My medium heavy seems to break a lot on Smith lake spots on the hook set with 6 to 8lb test. Maybe one day I’ll afford that right one. I know what I want, I just have to find it.

What BRAND of worms do you prefer in Cali? I'm back in 'Bama now, but when I lived out there, I tried to force 'em to bite Zoom finesse and Utail worms, to no avail. I had to use either small grubs (pumpkinseed/blk/copper), roboworms, or hand pours.

Caught my PB, 8 pounder with a shakeyhead. Middle of the day, hot 100 degree August day. The Seadooers were starting to show up and I was getting ready to head home. Just sayin’ … shakeyhead works anytime anywhere. I appreciate what you said about setting it down when the wind gets up. I push my luck with that sometimes and it just doesn’t work. That’s when it’s time to pull out the football head.

I see all these guys doing all these crazy threadings and inu rigs. My opinion has always been this: if you put a worm near a bass and she's even slightly interested, she's gonna bite it regardless if it's crooked, upside down, inside out, backwards, or doing back FLIPS-she doesn't care. Mostly, it's the mere PRESENCE of it her domain, NEAR HER, that makes her bite. She FEELS IT with her lateral line as much as she SEES IT with her eyes.

If you're like me, flipping, pitching, and snatching 'em out with that 8' flipping stick with a 1oz tungsten will eventually wear on those hands, elbows, and shoulders as you age. That will definitely put that lightweight spinning rod in your hand! Don't worry; if you catch 25 or 30 on it, you're BOUND TO have a few good 'uns!!!

I prefer a 1/4 ounce shaky head. Heavy enough to cast far on windy days and good for a baitcaster. Also light enough that the worms stand up better.
@shadygraves
@shadygraves 2 года назад
THIS YEAR, try a different approach. Try NOT feeling it. Make yourself use that spinning rod. Go light. Real light. Try a Zoom Finesse worm (junebug, grn pumpkin, or smoke purple) on a ¹/¹⁶oz Charlie Brewer Spider Slider Classic head. Cast it near wood on rock in the prespawn. You WON'T feel bottom. You WON'T feel the worm. THAT'S OKAY! Concentrate on the FALL of the worm. Just cast it near cover and let it fall. The slow, diagonal dive of that little worm is irresistible to bass. After you cast and let it fall until it SHOULD be on bottom, pick up your slack line and just 'CHECK' your worm to see if it's in a bass' mouth. If not, let it fall again. This way, you're just casting it out and waiting until it's in his mouth. When you tighten up your line to 'check' it, it makes it do a little dance that resembles a swimming, diving, or dying bream, shad, or other baitfish PERFECTLY. If it's crawfish you're imitating (yes, a worm imitates ALL bass forage!), be SURE to let it go all the way to bottom and give it sharp hops, along with long, SLOW falls again. Again, it's not the bottom contact that you're used to, so it takes a little practice, but you're targeting DIFFERENT FISH in a DIFFERENT WAY. Try this: Hold any straight worm, by it's head, in your hand. Try to hold it perfectly still. You can't. It moves, regardless of what you do. Add wind, waves, and boat movement and that worm is in CONSTANT motion. Now, instead of only targeting fish on the bottom, fish the entire water column. Once you get used to NOT feeling bottom, you'll see that you're basically casting it right into his mouth. Cast. Fall. Check. Fall. Check. Fall. SET THE HOOK when it's in his mouth. You will be astonished what you can do with 6 or 7lb line, a medium light 6 to 7' rod, and a fast, 1000 to 2500 series reel. I've had innumerable spring days when I had close to 300 bites doing this, only to land 75-80 on a good day. 30-50 bass is easily done using this technique and tackle in the warming prespawn days of spring.
@seizedcarcass8440
@seizedcarcass8440 2 года назад
@@shadygraves I do fish a shaky in lighter sizes. Just quarter ounce is one of my favorites for bait casting. I do fish a spinning rod also for my Ned rigs and dropshots. As well as some very light finesse jigs. I haven’t tried a 1/16 ounce shaky head before but I’ll definitely look into it. My favorite for Ned rigs are 1/10 ounce zman finesse shroomz.

I really wanna see a video on where fish go on tx day once u put 150/175 boats on same lake on a single day event after you've had a good practice week before. Do I change areas, change baits, presentation??
@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 2 года назад
I've never caught a single fish dragging a shaky head or ned rig- I'm sure other ppl do but, I don't seem to be able to catch anything that way. On the other hand- if I hop it like 4-6 inches at a time- or if I just raise my tip and shake it as I continue to raise so that my bait is moving forward in like 1-2-inch hops- I kill with it. Especially when I use a bait that will stand up off bottom- I've caught countless spotted bass doing this. They seem to love that up right, foraging posture. When I drag I tend to either get snagged in the cracks or, dig into the bottom and get bogged down in the muck. It's probably because of the places I fish, most places around here either have a big chunky rock bottom or, it's super soft and covered in old rotting leaves and stuff.

@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 2 года назад
The thing you just pointed out about the rod being more sensitive when the line is at closer to a 90-degree angle- that's why I keep my rod tip high while pitching. Guys are always like "Lower your rod tip so you'll be in position to set it..." but if you do this, chances are you won't even know to set it because you won't feel the bite. With my tip held straight up- almost, I can feel how my baits is falling, if it's kicking or not, if something bit it, if it brushed against something on the way down, etc. And, the fish can't feel me and is less likely to spit the bait so quickly. Gives me plenty of time to reel down and jack'em.
