It's not actually the strumming pattern, he's pressing his left hand fingers down on certain parts of the beat, and lifting them slightly to deaden the strings, giving it that percussive sound you hear.

No matter how much I mute, mine sounds horrible. The mute won’t mute and I watched your “how to chuck” video and that’s only for downstrum, so how are you making the chuck sound on the upstrum?

Try muting with the fret hand by letting your fret hand rest gently across all four strings like you're doing a bar cord and when you strum up or down it should be muted. experiment with how much pressure to rest on the strings with the fret fingers
