before i saw this videos i used to do a lot of jump smash which is not as powerful and always go flat letting the opponent place the return thus counter my smash, the people at our court always make fun of me that my jump smash is way weaker than the others doing regular smash , now those who made fun of me are so afraid to lift to me now they lose points playing out and week drives , thank you greg and jenny for this amazing videos

Thank you, Greg and Jenny for this video. Speaking of generating power, the best timing for the “Jump” smashes, is it when your body is on the way DOWN (still near to the top as the momentum shifting downward)? In my experience, you may add your weight (feel a little bit of pulling at the contact) to the smashing and you can also have a shorter "Falling" period to get ready for the next shot. How is your opinion?

That's exactly when they're hitting it. Watch the parts where they slow down the video. They start moving down and hit it right then.

Great work! It is worth to mention thou, that jump smash comes it some price. Except your are Goh V Shem, or just have super strong legs, jump smash can turn against you, when it is not a winner. Just keep in mind, that you lose time while dropping down after the jump/hit and even more, you legs/body have to recover longer, before you go for the next shot, if such is necessary. Not to mention the increased chance of ankle injuries when jump smash is executed in a rush, from an inconvenient position.

Yes definitely! That's why we said on our previous video there's actually no correlation between jump height and smash power! And for some people it might not be best to do it. Most women on the tour don't jump smash and even quite a few men!

Tips are good, in fact really really good for players like me. Not only this but all of the videos. Doing great job. Only problem is most of the players are right handed and you both are left hand players. And one suggestion, your videos are little too technical, which takes time to think practice learn. Some time it feels like not natural to the body, seems like an exercise. If we can use our natural body movement for advantages will be better and quick to learn. Came to know when one of my co-player told me that my style of playing is different, didn't understood what exactly he meant.😂 Later realized that I learned badminton from ground-up from RU-vid, never had any direct coach. You and other masters in RU-vid are my coach. So on you guys now who helped me where I am today, enjoying the sport now with lots of good players, which might never be possible without my masters.

anther excellent video, beautifully produced, simple and clear steepness is the main advantage of the jump smash. flatter smashes, unless they are perfectly placed into a large hole, are usually not very threatening because you have a long line along which to make an effective reply. a steep smash restricts the points from where you can make a return, and is therefore much more threatening so question: why dont girls jump smash? aside from a few exceptions, you dont see girls jump smash even at elite levels. a while back i watched girls from the korean national team playing. they were playing very aggressively with a strict ethos of getting and maintaining the attack at all times. in a long tough match i didnt see one clear, even though multiple attacks were repelled many times. also didnt see one jump smash. sometimes i ask strong professional girls, why dont you jump smash? i always get the same answer: i cant. these are super-fit athletes with incredible strength and physical reserves and massive quads, of course they can jump smash... they'd just have to practice it hard like they practice all the other amazing stuff they do. in women's doubles it would mean fewer of those rallies where they tire of attacking so they start clearing the shuttle like it's singles, something you often see in women's doubles even at the highest levels of play. you guys were kinda joking around but jen is right women's defensive skills are an area where they are close to on par with men. so you have this imbalance in women's doubles where attacking skills lag behind defensive skills. i'd like to see more jumping girls
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 3 года назад
Good question! We would also like to see it more and we are slowly but surely seeing more of it at the top level. As we said in our previous video, there's actually no correlation between smash power and jumping. Therefore due to the complex and physical nature of a jump smash many women may decide to focus on the power of the shot and not angle. Because women have such good defence but sometimes a less powerful smash it may also be a disadvantage performing a big jump smash as they could be left slightly out of position for the next shot!

Great video. You don't need a study at Loughborough to figure out that a shorter time means more force. That's basic physics. Seatbelts are made to increase the time taken for the energy to travel through you, decreasing the force on your body.

There is one thing that really frustrates me, i miss a lot of my smashes, and sometime i miss hit; but when i do have a good contact it ends up on the net. I would say only 20% of my smashes are successful, do you have any tips for me? Or can you make a tutorial showing how to reduce the number of bad smashes? Thank you.

Hey Greg and Jenny! First of all, thank you for all the work and effort you put in making these videos. I'm 20 years old and currently starting to play badminton at a higher level again, but I've struggled throughout the last two years because of an inflammed and irritated tibia right below my left knee (I'm right-handed). I've seen doctors and physiotherapists and they all recommend me to rest for a long period, after doing this however I play for a couple of months before the pain comes back. I've been having thoughts of quitting badminton because of this annoying pain below my knee. I wonder if you guys know effective exercices to build more muscles to protect my knee/tibia from becoming inflamed. Or any other way to effectively deal with this. Greetings, Hannes

Please say us some drills for jumping action. I getting nice time with normal smash but I'm not able hits the shuttle properly with jumping action. Some time I even miss the shuttle while jumping and I'm not getting the proper height while jumping.
