In this tutorial, I propose beginners' first upside-down figure, the Seahorse Backflip, a figure that is based on the Tuck Position. There is a wide belief that beginners should start with the Front Pike Position (and usually followed by Helicopter and switches in Helicopter). The Front Pike Position is more demanding than the Tuck Position because in terms of hamstrings' flexibility and iliopsoas' (or hip flexors') strength. Oftentimes, the degree of flexibility and strenght required is hard to achieve in leisure sports athletes.
The Seahorse Backflip is also easy to learn in terms of sculling. Because it is very brief, it does not require support sculling. The Press Sculling suffices to do the Seahorse Backflip, one of the most intuitive sculling techniques of artistic swimming.
I invented the Seahorse Position as a simplified variation of the Bent Knee Vertical Position. The Seahorse Position is easier than the Bent Knee Vertical Position because the thigh of the bent leg does NOT need to be perpendicular to the surface and the toe of the bent leg does NOT need to be in contact with the inside of the extended leg. These two characteristics make the Seahorse Position adequate for the leisure sport context. In addition, the Seahorse Position can also be used in competitive artistic swimming to foster motivation on the learning way to the Bent Knee Vertical Position and as an effective contrast exercise!
*Correction in "Skills you need to master": You don't need to master the feet first sculling to learn this figure, but standard/stationary sculling.

Thank you for your comment! This dry land exercise is very demanding in terms of both hip flexor strength and hamstring flexibility. Try to do it while standing. Alternatively, you can put a cushion under your hips. Hope it helps!
