Recently I've read a book "Spitfire manual 1940" by Air Ministry. Book contains instructions and manuals for "pursuit-aircraft-pilots-to-be" regarding operating Spitfires and lots of notes written by an experienced pilot (I think one of the Aces). Manual and specification is pretty much self-explanatory. But these notes are brilliant: experienced pilot describes in great details every aspect of successful mission: bomber escort, dogfight, ground attack and lots of more. Really, really useful and thrilling. Especially after I realized it was written by actual pilots for someone, who is just about to learn how to operate aircraft, destroy an enemy and come back home. Amazing. Three things they couldn't express enough: flying pursuit aircraft IS ABOUT TEAMWORK AND TEAMWORK ONLY and that the only role and task of pursuit aircraft IS TO INTERCEPT AND DRIVE AWAY ENEMY BOMBERS. Every other tasks should be performed only to the extend to make main task possible to fulfill. Last thing is: ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SIX AND LOOK AROUND YOU. From the moment you are rotating to the moment you are taxing after successful landing. Another thing I recall from another book: "Hurricane - the last witnesses" is pilots telling that in many aspects hurricane was better then spitfire. They stressed that flying spitfire with it's very, very sensitive elevator and airlones was very, very hard to get used to (it was common to attache some makeshift weights to plane control surfaces just to make it easier to fly) to the extend, that "if you have flew spitfire you spend half of the time unconscious".

Another great and informative video. I found that the spit does has a nasty tendency to balloon up with the flaps down on finals.. if you over compensate with the control movements, you could easily make a hard landing. I guess trimming the plane properly on finals and small movements on the control stick ( especially vertical movements ) are key to landing this lovely plane. Thanks once again for the great work
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 6 лет назад
Thanks as always Renato! The ballooning tendency during power reduction in the flare is definitely something to look out for, it definitely caught me by surprise\on my first couple of landings in it. The trim is very important as you said, and as long as the power reduction with back pressure is smooth it ends up almost landing itself. "Greasing" a landing in the Spitfire becomes surprisingly easy with a little practice.

A great tutorial video (if you have not already done one), is on setting up the aiming distance and arc for rear gunners. Although primarily rear gunners, I have noticed one or two planes which require the main guns to be properly setup. I discovered on these planes the default distance and arc, is not the same as you may set for your convergence. (They may be different resulting in your shots falling far short of where you set your convergence. I should note the default settings 125/65) Thank you.

Also aforementioned pilots stated that huge disadvantage of spitfire toward BF-109 was engine size, therefore power. And it's "eagerness" to stall.

Yeah I like. Just came to remember where the fuel gauge was located. She does like to float on finals to touch down. Easy on stick and throttle does it. Packs a punch but with limited ammo so make short bursts count but those Hispano's noice. Holds her own even on the Kuban front where she was getting a little dated by the time she arrived. Your vids are greatly appreciated Requiem. Oh and Spit in decent VR - lovely and it helps also with ground looping for some reason. Easier to know what's going on.

Great video! I may be wrong, but in IL-2 BOS I have found the Spitfire to be one of the fastest and nimblest planes, a pleasure to fly for a rank amateur like me. On the flip side, its armament seems to be completely nerfed. In single player missions, I find it nearly impossible to shoot anything down or do serious damage to enemy (bot) planes while raking them.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
The MkV is a great airplane to fight in but the ammo count is what lets you down. You really need to be close and only fire when you're sure of hitting with the cannons to make it worthwhile.

@RequiemsACTL

Thanks Arthipex. Yep it's 95mph. I think it's once you start getting to about 85mph you begin nearing the stall with the flaps/gear out.

Little tidbit. I heard from some old spitfire pilots that just before they would touchdown they would quickly put thier flaps up. Making them go from floating just over the feild to gliding down. Eitherway good video. though you should add.some more detail and make it longer.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 5 лет назад
That's interesting Dillan. Personally I wouldn't be retracting the flaps just before touchdown in any airplane as I do it either during the roll after landing if I'm doing a touch and go or after being clear of the runway. That's in RL of course...in the sim however do whatever you want! Thanks for that tidbit though, I'm going to give it a try in IL-2 when I get home in a couple of days and see how it handles.
@KaiserHabsburg
@KaiserHabsburg 5 лет назад
If you do so how I preform It is rhe standard comming off left wing. pine up decend like normal. But just as your touching down. say 3-5 meters. Neutralize your vertical speed. Then do so. Bassically as your about to touch down and start to decend Raise flaps. I tend to do this in almost all of my aircraft unless shes unstable on landing.

Finding the Spitfire groundloops really easily and I rarely land without spinning and whacking a wing on the ground during braking. Around the 30-50mph part is where things get tricky. I've watched your landing errors video and also followed the advice here to pull back on the stick and use brakes in combination with the rudder pedals but find I still can't consistently judge the rudder correction. I either under correct and the first spin direction gets out of control or over-correct and find I go out of control the other way. Before ask yes I'm using rudder pedals (Simped) not a twist stick. Any tips? Also do you change the rudder trim? At takeoff you dial in full right trim, but wasn't clear if you kept it trimmed like that during the circuit and landing.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 6 лет назад
Just in case...A friend of mine had the same problem and found that he thought he was braking but was actually using the toe brake control. The Spitfire does not have toe brakes but has a brake lever, so if you're trying to use toe brakes they won't work. Use the same brake button that you use with the Russian planes. Don't worry about the rudder trim so much for landing, your feet should be what keeps you straight. I notice you mentioned a speed during the rollout...but once you land, keep your eyes outside to get a better feel of what the plane is doing. If you're using the brake correctly, then it's probably a issue where you need to be proactive with the rudder pedals or adjust your Yaw Curve so it's a little less sensitive in the initial range of motion. Your feet should always be dancing essentially to stay straight. I would have to see a track of your landings to know for sure.
@jonmoore176
@jonmoore176 6 лет назад
Thanks for the advice. My simped pedals don't have toe brakes so I just mapped a joystick button to the brakes. I tried a few things and raising the flaps as soon as the tailwheel was down helped a bit. My issue is always at the end of the braking run and I think I was using too much rudder when I was going slower and by making briefer, rudder inputs with less deflection as I slow and I managed my first landing without a spin. I also found watching the turn indicator towards the end of the braking run helped me judge things better than watching outside, as I could see clearly if I was turning and nip it in the bud better. I guess that is where a sim and real life are different as we don't have the feel and have to rely on visual cues and instruments more. Other thing I found out is the Spit is more controllable on taxing with RPM control fully back (low revs). Can makes things busy to adjust RPM on the braking run so I move it back once I'm under control and stopped or at taxi speed. If I keep having issues I'll post a replay on the forum and link here. So overall what Is helping at the moment is:- Stick fully back and flaps up once tail is down. Sharp (high deflection) short (brief) rudder inputs at start of landing roll when still moving fast and reducing the deflection of inputs as I slow. Reducing RPM can also help particularly when taxiing
@jonmoore176
@jonmoore176 6 лет назад
Kept experimenting and worked out what my issue was. Simply put, I was pumping the brakes as i was used to nose over under braking on other sims. Problem was I wasn't adapting rudder input between brakes applied and released. The differential braking makes the turn stronger so needs gentler rudder inputs. Now I just hold the brakes down all the time and make small rudder inputs to hold steady and works every time, suprisingly the Spit on Il2 never noses over under full brakes.

Great tutorial, I’m flying the mkV and IX but struggling to get a 2 point landing. I’ve watched your vid on wheel landings but do you have any handy tips specific to the spit that might help pls? I’ve been using power and pitch and making a point at rounding out at 85/90mph. I’m trying to keep the flare more of a gentle sink but it always seems to bounce or goes into a natural 3 point position. It doesn’t look like I’m flaring too high on the playbacks. Thanks!
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 8 месяцев назад
Suspension in Il-2 is a bit too hard so getting two pointers consistently is a little harder. You could try carrying some extra speed than what you're doing at touchdown though. Other than that don't have any huge tips other than practice.

@nealshave6085 8 месяцев назад
That’s cool, sounds like I’m on the right lines. Just practice! Nice one thank you 😊
@nealshave6085
@nealshave6085 8 месяцев назад
So I’ve been practicing and oh it’s coming together. I’ve found that on final at 100mph is good then slowly transition to the round out and hold off. Rather than letting the sink start you can manage it with the throttle and hold the right attitude while letting a small amount of speed peel off. You basically kiss the ground and man it’s peachy! It’s slightly easier on grass I think but that could be just me. I also think it’s easier in the mkV compared with the mkIX. The power adjustment is more acute in the mkIX so it’s more sensitive to power changes. Hope this might help others as well.

At that point I'm reducing power and the RPM to be at the "Max Rich Continuous" settings instead of "Combat Power" or higher so I could climb without putting unneeded stress on the engine. It lets you save the combat power for actual combat instead of the climb out.

Yep it's basically the planes and map, but unlike RoF if you don't own a map it doesn't restrict you from flying it in MP or shooting at the airplanes in a quick mission. It's just that you can't obviously fly the airplanes you haven't bought or use the map in single player. The MP is pretty active overall.

Usually you would expect to be flying with other Spitfires, but if you're flying with Russian airplanes then you'll need to convert between mph and km/hr / ft and m. Approximately... 1 mph = 1.6 km/hr, so 100mph is 160 km/hr 3.3 ft = 1m, so 3300ft is 1000m

@@RequiemsACTL You know i was gonna ask that but Jake beat me to it,just wanted to add,wouldn't leaving at at right rudder make the flying experience very weird? plane would be wanting to go sideways all the time or am i missing something? also i wanted to ask Req,why do WW2 airplanes require so much fiddling with the radiators versus a car that doesn't have any thing like that? dont get me wrong, i have always flown with engine management full blown even in the old IL2 days which was nothing like this but i still did, love adjusting things and so forth plus it makes thee experience that much more enjoyable and immersive,i was just curious. Also, the other day i was flying a mission on a BF109 with automatic rads and my plane still got hot and the engine conked out,how come? thanks for all your videos,they are the best.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
@@dntlss Well, if you didn't use some rudder trim at least then your foot would get tired by having to hold the rudder input for the entire flight. You use the trim to help take away that rudder pressure while keeping the airplane in coordinated flight, but the amount of rudder pressure needed will change depending on your power settings and airspeed. So if you trim correctly with them at a certain amount, if either of them change then the required rudder pressure would change and so would the amount of trim
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 года назад
@@dntlss the engine management side of things is related to your power settings and airspeed as well as the radiator(s) settings. To keep things simple and equivalent to Il-2...your regular car's engine won't be designed to have emergency power or combat power, but it will only have continuous power available so overheating and breaking wouldn't be an issue on a brand new engine really. In those airplanes you have the ability to exceed the design limits in the engine much easier than in a car, so you can overheat and break the engine even if your radiators are open fully. The solution is to stick to your max continuous settings when outside of combat, but once you're in combat all rules go out the window. Better to have a dead engine after shooting the guy down than restrict yourself trying to save the engine and get shot down yourself
@dntlss

Howdy Mr. Offensive, I follow the manuals for these airplanes as much as possible when making these videos, and this is what the original manual says to do referencing the canopy: 16. Approach and Landing "During the preliminary approach see that the cockpit hood is locked open, and the emergency exit door is set at the half-cock position. Take care to not get the arm out into the airflow." Practically speaking though if it's already open it would offer a faster egress from the airplane in the event something bad happens instead of scrambling to open it.
