This townscape painting demonstrates how a complex scene can be painted using tonal washes, from light to dark, with details added at the end.
It is a complex image, and therefore a good challenge to get the cobwebs working.
Although my sketch is fast-forward, the painting is real time, and by watching my progress, you can paint along. Maybe hit the pause while you mix a colour or have a think… or scrub through quickly to see the final result.
Download the photo from my website, and use it as a guide if you'd like to paint along.

Your paintings always look so much more beautiful than the photos? btw it's been a pleasure to find your videos and try my hand at watercolors for the first time in my life other than a coloring book with my kids many years ago. I've always loved art but never pursued a degree in it other than elective classes in college here and there and did a speech once on Rubens work. One of my daughters has a masters degree in art and the other a BFA. My husband who is a physician has always liked my little projects and has asked me to pursue more education at my golden age of 55 as I'm always saying I wish I had formal training. He has a large capacity for art and a great deal of knowledge. I'm not up to going back to school for 4 years but I may take a class or two and certainly have enjoyed your videos. Very informative and enjoyable. The first night I tried a painting of a waterscape of yours I couldn't believe how relaxing and enjoyable it was as the thrill of going to the art store a few times for materials. What fun. I haven't set my tubes of paint yet so used children's watercolors to do my first painting and couldn't believe how well it turned out with cheap watercolors and can not even imagine what will happen with good paper and paint which I have but haven't used yet. I did use my new nice brushes which I think really helped with the lower level paint and multimedia paper I used for the first painting. I'd like to go get a nice variety of quality brushes but for now I just have two larger brushes you used in the first video I watched. If you take groups on trips to take photos of potential later work please contact me as my girls and I would love to join you in Europe or where ever you explore for new photos to work from. Sometimes group travel is more affordable than small bookings. Thanks so much. Babi, sounds like Bobbi girls are Brooke, Brittanie, Blair and son may join as well William. Wishing you and your family good health and long life.

Thankyou for your lovely comment. I’m glad you have found the ‘easy’ side of painting. As for age: 50’s is still young! And doing a course at your local technical college can be a great start to a new career.

You really love painting , these videos are great and really relaxing to watch. You seem excited when you work and that must be a great feeling. Thanks for mentioning the colours you use, not all tutorials do that. You talk through the process of painting in detail, you're work is beautiful . Thanks shirley.

You are extremely gifted and experienced. I watched 4 of your videos in a row and for one example, you seemed to decide to paint the brackets holding the lamps and instantly, in a blink of an eye, they were there. The people were better in your painting than in the original photograph. I have much to learn from you. Thank you!

Love the way you paint watercolour. How do you stop your paper from buckling
@shirleypeters
@shirleypeters 3 года назад
Thankyou. I use 300gsm paper. Sometimes it still buckles though. I use a hairdryer to dry it, and the buckles flatten out.

Just found your videos and FB page Shirley, lovely work. I for one would love you to make a video on your sketching process. It fascinates me a lot watching you build up the sketch. Its a shame that this part is always fast forwarded as I think it would help a lot of people to master that vital part of any watercolour painting.
@shirleypeters
@shirleypeters 4 года назад
Thank you Tony. Yes, I’m going to include sketching in each one in future. Not fast forwarding.
@tonygreen971

Thank you Shirley. Hopefully that would not make the video too long? If so I think that a separate video just highlighting your sketching process and way of getting from the reference image to the painting surface would still be a great video on its own.
