Let's learn to pronounce French R NOW! In this video, I'm sharing my technique of learning French r sound that worked with me and all my students.
Pronunciation of French r is not that hard with a detailed explanation of the tongue, jaw, and lips position. But sometimes it still doesn't help. For these cases, I have a secret trick that works all the time.

It's a pity people feel it's important to get a somewhat standard R sound because there's NOT a standard one. If you pronounce it like in Italian for example, you sound like many french did back in the last century, and that's cute. On the other hand, if you try to force it too much, chances are that you will make it too harsh and you will sound like you come from Maghreb.

I'm 72 years old and have been struggling for 50 years to pronounce the French "R" right. I was taught all sorts of things in high school and college... technical stuff about using the uvula, and the "R" being a velar sound. But I was never shown the right way to do it. Until now I had the sound placed in the back of my mouth and it never sounded right... it was passable but it sounded like I was gagging. But in just 10 minutes of watching this video I realized what I was doing wrong and was able to place the sound further down in my throat and then the "trilling" sound came naturally. The gargling exercise is genius! Thank you. 😊 Now I'm ready to sit down at the piano and sing "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" and "La Vie En Rose." 😎

We've just tried this water trick in my class and most students are now choking. Thanks! mdr Another way to work towards the R sound is to say kla kla kla and slowly move it to kra. It's hard to type about but it's worked in my experience.

Let me tell you, I found it easier to pronounce the R since I started snoring. It was easier to get that back throat vibration fairly well.

My problem with the French R was always that I was too good at trilling, or gargling as you called it. I had to figure out how to make it have the correct sound that the French R has, the kind that’s more harsh. I think I’ve got it, this video has helped me a lot.

Read so many posts and watched videos, especially that one with a pencil in my mouth (only succeeded in making a fool of myself) but your explanations and the way you show how to move your mouth and tongue...that's exactly what I needed! It's not great, but I finally managed to get a decent r sound come out for the first time. Now time to practice till I get it perfect, thank you!!

Hello! I have a question: although I can do the r, I get my throat extremely dry way too quickly and I cannot pronounce a lot of words with this r afterwards, since it will sound like an h. What would you recommend to do, in this case? Besides drinking water, please, I already water my throat after every word, but there are some instances where I am not able to do so (such as when I have to speak at my course with the professor).

relax your mouth, it's probably too tense. sometimes i have the same issue. i just give myself a few seconds of silence, a good gulp or two and continue

Most of time, when I try to teach the R sound to english people, I mean as a french man, it's not like they don't succeed, most of issues are really related to the fact they are forcing it, they really push it too hard. It is something really smooth at some point, it should not break you speaking flow. I think it is simply something to practice, don't be ashamed by sounding wrong, let it go, and with confidence, it will start to sound perfect. I can hear this forcing a little bit still in Anastasia's R, but it is pretty much there. What I am impressed about is her "U" though, perfect, with a tiny bit of voice colour in it. Reminds me a bit of the southern France accent :), the colours the Mediterranean coast, it so charming.

It's very Easy for Iranian, Pakistani and Arab speakers. Farsi, Urdu and Arabic have these sounds and alphabets. I believe the same is true for Hebrew speakers.

I came across your video today. With your tips on pushing the lower teeth with the tongue, I was able to finally make the r sound. The problem now is to do the same thing when the sound is in the middle of words. Like the word “propre” from your examples. A bit tricky to switch from p, which involves closing lips, to r.
