In today's guitar lesson, I'm going to show you my method to learning and memorizing the notes of the guitar fretboard. As a quartet guitar player, learning where the notes are is extremely important because we play a lot of triads. Once you know where to quickly find the notes on the fretboard, your playing goes to another level. Spend a few minutes a day using this method and you'll be amazed at how easily you'll be able to find notes across the fretboard.
Let me know in the comment section below if you find this method helpful. Or post below how you learn all the notes on the fretboard.
Thanks so much!

This is a good lesson!!! For us newbies, the one correction is that the low E string is actually the 6th string. The high E is the 1st string. I share that because when we are starting to learn how to play guitar, knowing the 6,5,4,3,2,1 strings in the correct order is important. Mr. Wilson, you are so talented. Thank you for teaching!!!

Great lesson Doc Wilson! I also learned the primary notes (the birds) and it made it easy to know the sharps and flats. Thx

this is a great technique, but you'll need to work on this almost daily for quite some time to "really" burn it into your memory.

Lucky that many many decades ago I was a brass horn player (if it was treble clef and brass I played it) in Jr. High and HS so reading music is not that big of a deal but this guitar neck is destroying me. I know about 12 chords but ask me what are the notes that make up the chord, or ask me to grab the guitar and play G#. Both of those I would have to count up from the nut etc... as I know my strings, and the what is what note wise, but I have to count up to get it. After a year I have made no progress (not counting the 6-7 months I had to take off for an injury I had to my hand due to the guitar). What about we little folk out here who have so small of hands that we could grip the neck like a baseball bat and our thumb would still not be able to reach the A string? In a normal playing position even the low E string is out of the question? In other words muting is out of the question due to how small our hands are. IamMorrison on RU-vid has smaller hands than I do, and I have small hands (stand 3-4 inches less than I do too). Most guitar instructors, and others on RU-vid, treat all viewers/players as if they are 5-10 to 6 feet plus in height. For instance Morrison's hand his longest finger is not much longer than a AA battery. My hand is 6.5in wide and 6.5in from the tip of my longest finger to my wrist.

Would you please explain how you see the high E string as the 6th and the low E as the 1st string? I’m only asking because I am new at this. Thank you and I appreciate your work.

easy. The first string starts from the bottom then goes up

Hi Bro. Wilson, I forgot I had the ear buds stil in the pad! LOL! Thank you. I know how to read music and play piano but everyone in my house plays strings but me and don't have time to help me. I recently fell in love with the sounds of the steel guitar and havr been researching costs. But I guess I need to learn guitar first. I sent you a messsge from Jacque. Ok have a good one. Thanks.
