Fun fact the closest related languages to Hopi are the Aztec languages for example Nahuatl.

Hak’i = who is, you have a glottal stop after the hak, meaning stop before saying the I sound paas’i pàasa’a noova = food nonova = eating (pl). tuumoyta = eating (sg) Huvam nonova’a = Y’all eat Just as English, if you have a singular subject you must have a singular verb and if you have pluaral subjects you must have a plural verb. Example: Tiyòoya tuumoyta. The little boy is eating. Totimhòoyam noonova. The little boys are eating. Pay yàasa’a. Tsu’wisiwma

For "hak'i," does the apostrophe indicate a pause or a glottal stop there? I don't hear it when you say the word. Or is it a contraction? -- I hear the longer vowel in "haaki," though. It sound like either two separate vowels, or else a longer duration (held for two or three beats). -- I just don't hear the glottal stop in "hak'i." :) Thanks, JD!
@arvismyron1014
@arvismyron1014 Год назад
Yes.......the apostrophe mark is a glottal stop which indicates a short stop before saying the rest. In this case, the i is not attached to the k, but by itself when pronouncing the word. Hak.' i

Each village has their own dialect and their own Hopi words with several meanings. He says certain words with the wrong meaning from where I come from
@tsuwisiwmapolikwaptiwa21
@tsuwisiwmapolikwaptiwa21 5 лет назад
Dialects do not make that much difference when we are speaking to each, we still understand each other...."mutual intelligibility". He is a 3rd Mesa speaker, so saying words in 3rd Mesa. exp.: tumala'ta/tumala'yta. 2nd Mesa dialect does not have the "y" sound in the word, just a glottal stop. Pay yàasa'a.
