When you are someone that gets antsy when you’re not doing anything, cross stitching makes me very relaxed. I sort of feel accomplished when I’m watching a movie and cross stitching at the same time. 🤣

Perle cotton costs more. It is just tapestry stitch. You could do the same with floss using 4 threads. Doing at the grocery check-out. I don't think so.

I'm an experienced cross stitch and this would be ok for very simple projects. I wouldn't recommend it for very detailed or patterns that have half cross stitches. The technique used is the same for needlepoint and Beth, cross stitch is not complicated at all, rather very addicting. The size thread I used was #5 on 14 ct Aida and it does give a pretty sheen. In my opinion, I will stick with DMC floss for my cross stitch.

Joy Steven I totally agree with you, with small projects it can look nice, but once you go for tens of colours and complicated shadowing, it loses a lot. I love the quality of DMC threads, but this tutorial is pretty bad.

It looks easy enough, I also liked how the back was finished off. I once saw a design that the front and back looked identical. I have no idea how the crafter obtained it, but this looks very similar. Interesting video.

for those askign the difference between this and needlepoint, needlepoint isnt done in a straight line MOST of the time, its done on a diagonal in a basket stitch. sure you could "cheat" and do it this way BUT the whole point is they look different when done this way (straight vs diagonal).

I always enjoy watching crafter's and whilst this was very interesting it needed more info at the start. Ie. What Pearl is, what is it's direct opposite in usual floss (how many strands etc.)? Is there a chart available giving the Pearl/Floss size comparison? Loved the trick with cutting the Pearl to the right length, Is there any tricks cutting floss to the right length? Very useful.

How many strands do you use? Can I do this stitch to replace Cross Stitch? I have some intricate cross-stitching kits. Can I do half-stitch instead. If the kit requires 2-strands what do you recommend. Can I use the regular embroidery thread?

so are you saying that using the pearl cotton eliminates the need for the second stitch because it's thicker than regular cross stitch thread maybe? Thanks.
@BoudiccaPLG
@BoudiccaPLG 9 лет назад
Pamela Lee Yes. But it is still a little bit more complicated than that. Depending on how many squares per inch in your fabric. The higher the thread count per inch the less strands of thread you need. This video is a little misleading.

@tizianazedda384
@tizianazedda384 9 лет назад
StephGraceTheRU-vidr does it happen while you stitch? If yes, you can untangle them BEFORE the create knots and mess. When you notice your thread is getting "twisty" you have to release you needle and let the thread fall down vertical. You will see the needle rotates a bit, if you see the thread is still a bit twisted you can take the needle out and side with your fingers along the thread (for the fabric out). The twisting thing is caused by the movement of our hands while we stitch, we cannot avoid it and happens with all the threads.

If I were using 6 strand, would I just use all 6 strands? Would that be equal to Purl? Thank you
@BoudiccaPLG
@BoudiccaPLG 9 лет назад
Quilterbee Tarpley That would depend on the thread count of your fabric. Also when doing cross-stitch or tapestry (which is what this is) with floss you need to separate the threads. If it's 6 threads you're using all the threads need to be separated, not just peel say 3 threads from the rest of the skein. It releases the twist and you get much better coverage. Also helps stop the twisting you can get on the thread as you stitch.

isn't that just the tent stitch for needlepoint?
@Kuro_Tsuki
@Kuro_Tsuki 8 лет назад
+patricia chandler That's exactly what it is. Personally, I would never replace full cross stitches with half stitches ever. Most of my works tend to be gifts, so I go big or go home.

@patriciachandler340
@patriciachandler340 7 лет назад
She's using Perle cotton, instead of cotton floss. You do not separate the strands with perle. Perle cotton comes in various sizes the higher the number i.e perle cotton # 8 is finer than # 5. Love working with perle cotton in my needlepoint.. BTW. I'm not the Patricia Chandler that made the comment below.

One Pearl Cotton strand: 2 thinner threads of DMC Floss (originally 6 strands of floss/ skein).

@BoudiccaPLG

Beth Neild No but you will use twice the amount of thread. This is a video about saving thread and counting down the time it would take. But if it's say an alphabet sampler or an edge design this would not work well.

This is horrible. Her techniques are awful... You cannot simply replace all your stitches with half stitches. It's not the same at all.
@tizianazedda384
@tizianazedda384 9 лет назад
morningsdaughter I agree, she has pretty bad techniques. Half stitches work ok only with small and not much detailed patterns.
@moringsdaughter
@moringsdaughter 9 лет назад
They can also be used to add texture to certain areas. Like the pattern I'm working on now has a lot of white half stitches to make them popout and give them a texture that looks more like snow on a branch. (It's a Dimensions pattern with cardinals on a snowy branch.) But you can't call it cross stitching if you just just half stitches... This is the kind of lady that would use the cross stitch setting on an embroidery machine and call it a substitute. It is if you just want the design, but it's not the same or as nice as if you do it by hand.
@tizianazedda384
@tizianazedda384 9 лет назад
I totally agree with you. I used half stitches for some details in larger project. I once used an extra half stitches line (on top of the standard x stitches) to give a 3D effect and the result was really nice. But as you said, this is not cross stitching an entire project like that is not nice.

Notice how they tilt the work so the angle makes it look more filled in. Not once to we see that cupcake strait on. I think becasue there is LESS coverage, and therefore you can see the Aida underneath.
