Thank you GTN for still making videos 3 minutes when that's as long as they need to be! This was a great overview with no fluff, really appreciated when every other creator seems to make every video 10+ minutes for the sake of ad revenue
I am trying to learn butterfly all over again. It was much easier 50 years ago when I was younger and stronger. For the kick, they used to teach that the kick power came from the hips, but now, they teach that the entire body is used to generate the power. This is slightly different on the breathing stroke. You can not properly engage the abs because you are inhaling. For most, this results in a higher amplitude kick with the heels coming slightly out of the water.
I tend to watch a bunch of videos about any particular thing I want to learn before attempting it. One common thread in the fly videos is the concept of "pressing your chest down". This is all about getting the entire body into generating the kick power, not just from the waist/hips down. I do like to do an extended glide some times rather than just initiating the catch. This helps get the idea of the body wave into your motions.
Perfect timing, we started doing butterfly last night! Our teacher apologised as she's only taught kids before, so please excuse her for talking about thinking of being wriggly worms or mermaids 😂
I didn't quite get the movement as explained in the catch phase. I believe that some graphics, highlighting what you're talking about currently would help immensely. Good work nevertheless
I’m almost as fast doing butterfly over 25 yards/meters as I am doing freestyle. I can complete 50 meters long course. Maybe 100 yards short course taking advantage of turns and push offs. More than that? Not a chance. I can easily swim freestyle for miles but the 200m butterfly seems impossible.
For triathlon if you are going from the shore into an open water ocean swim with waves using butterfly right before a wave can let you swim under the wave. An extremely situational but very useful trick but not really worth learning in my opinion unless you have a specific target race. I mostly like it because it allows me to mix up my swim workouts. I treat butterfly like doing some drills. Same with breast stroke. I do actually practice backstroke though because that can actually be useful in triathlons. My priority is 90% freestyle, 8% backstroke, 1% breast and butterfly.
General swim skills and fitness. Very enjoyable when you reach a certain level. Ability to follow along in club sessions that might include some butterfly.
