I am so grateful for any support you choose to give, financial or emotional! 🙏 This time I chose to learn unicycling and set the milestone at 30 seconds of continuous riding. I recorded every second of learning and made this video. It took me 2 hours and 38 minutes to do it.

That is an incredible short time for learning to ride a unicycle. (I'm 1 of the trainers that teaches the unicycle at Don Bosco in the Netherlands) Most people/kids if they practice about an hour a week take anywhere between a couple of week to a few months with instruction, though there are exceptions with some people learning it in only minutes. If you really want to enjoy riding a unicycle you also need to learn how to idle (going back and forth in the same place) and how to get seated without using your hands. A few quick tips for anyone who wants to learn how to ride a unicycle: sit upstraight your posture on the bike is 1 of the most important things to get right. The other is the angle of the unicycle and where your balance is. A little bit forward but not too much and not too little. It is very important to NOT look at the ground (this will mess up your posture and your balance) and to keep moving at about a walking speed. To summarize: have good posture your body should be in 1 line with the unicycle so HIPS forward SHOULDERS back AND DON"T LOOK DOWN!!!! Oh and keep moving and keep practising. Good luck;)

ya i call bullshit on a lot of this guys' videos. don't get me wrong, they are entertaining, but when i learned to ride a unicycle (and i remember putting in FUCKIN work, i estimated it took me about 24 hours of total PRACTICE TIME over the course of a few days). . and that was just to get up and maybe peddle. . .i dunno, 5 feet or so. same w/ spinning a basketball on your finger. . .he claims it took him 4 hours if i remember right. again, total bullshit. at 24 minutes he has the ball spinning on his finger for a while. no. fuckin. way. at least not w/o some prior experience. anyhow, glad to see someone else calls out the bs.
@thomasweyermann5848
@thomasweyermann5848 4 года назад
I too am impressed. I remember putting in an strong hour a day for at least a week before I was any good at it. 2 1/2 hours is exceptional
@jugglejunk
@jugglejunk 4 года назад
@@thomasweyermann5848 That is actually still pretty fast, but yes 2 1/2 hours in total time is quite the exception in my opinion. This however just goes to show it is way more about how someone approaces learning and their strategy for learning than it is about talent or learning a new skill with fancy equipment. I usually make the following comparison in regards to talent: compare it with a track and field race, where the people with talent or a natural disposition get a favourable starting spot. Sure they are ahead of the competition at first but they don't run fast enough (learn fast enough or are able to develope a good learning system), they will get outrun eventually by the less talented/less favourable starting positions in the end. The lesson here is that it is not your talent that determines your potential, but your ability to learn and improve. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd agree with me here.

I have wanted a uni for a very long time and just never bucked up and got one. I finally got one for Christmas a couple weeks ago and it has sat in my bedroom, intimidating me and I'm sure it's been calling me a pussy. Today I decided to try a bit and only just sat on it while holding on to a wall. Not knowing what to do, I came to RU-vid and found this. Thank you! I could feel the joy you had that moment when you got your first revolution. I am excited and inspired to get out and do the same. Thanks again for video! It is fantastic!!!

1 hr is very fast to learn how to unicycle. In fact, he has some prior experience trick riding a bicycle. So, basically he's one of these super human talents. They say it takes 20 hrs to learn...seriously? I'm more in the 60-70 hrs camp and that's riding everyday sometimes 2 sessions. Finally got it and getting better. So, keep on. Two tips had I known it would have saved me a lot of time. 1.) Always fall forward, and push yourself to always feel like your falling forward. 2.) Learn on the smallest uni(20 inch). 3.) Set the seat on the low-side, because it allow's your leg muscles to be more actively involved. If you set it high then you must rely more upper body balance over seat, which is something you don't have yet. 4.) Use aggressive elbow/shoulder/hip action for balance. Hands to the side like a trapeze walker does nothing. You must aggressively/quickly throw your upper body weight around and twist it.

You really don't need a helmet when you're just learning how to ride a unicycle. When you lose balance the unicycle will either shoot forward or backward from underneath you. Either way it's almost impossible not to land on your feet.
@dingfeldersmurfalot4560
@dingfeldersmurfalot4560 5 лет назад
@@1951split Very wrong on both counts. If you fall backwards, it is easy to land on your butt, and hard. Worse though is that unicycles usually have pegs sticking out of the pedals, to help your shoes grip them ... and those pegs can tear pretty deep into your flesh if you fall backwards and have one of the pedals underneath you (which one easily can be). Happened to me, and I was out of action for a month while waiting for the wounds to heal. It was either that or a trip to go get stitches. So yes you can fall, and you can get hurt falling. Easily.

Great post, Mike! My story: I had been thinking about learning this for a few weeks and was browsing amazon and the likes in view of purchasing a uni. Then fate knocked on my door: I was visiting my brother in Brussels (last week of Oct 18), I parked the car and next to the parking spot was a trashcan with a ...uni in it! So, I took it, cleaned it, changed the tyre and tube and brought it back to Kenya (where I live). I'm starting training as from Saturday (17Nov18) and I'll let you know the progress. BTW, I'm 52 years old (this remark is directed to those who think the child in them should be forever silenced).

I never mastered the unicycle, though I did ride them back when I was a kid. One way I found to help learn at the very beginning was instead of going along a wall.. we had a old clothes line . If you go down the clothes line with your hands out on the two ropes/wires for stability.. it really lets you find that center balance . I would think that might be easier than leaning against a wall.

I just wanted to come back and say that this video has totally changed my life. Seeing someone learn a skill I used to think was basically magic in the span of a single long movie broken up over a few sessions changed how I looked at what it was possible for me to accomplish. In the past 5 years as a high school drop out I have applied this to learning how to learn while collecting my own set of skills. Now I sit here, a college graduate waiting to begin about the best case job for being fresh out of school with a clear career plan for my life, only one to two job changes away from being in the best spots in the industry. Thank you sir, any time I teach someone a skill I use you as an example of what can be done.

Great video! I haven't been on a uni in 25 years but always loved riding several kilometers at a time for 5 summers and winters on hard packed snow. Here are a few more tips to add to the ones already mentioned. - i learned in the summer at an outdoor ice hockey skating rink by holding onto the wooden rails until i got more confident - i never hurt myself and always landed flat on my feet and caught the uni or let it fall half the time to the ground - NORCO bike company had an unlimited FREE frame replacement plan so I had it replaced twice from falling - its fun to do 5kilometer fund raisers on a uni but make sure to wear a chicken costume I never learned how to idle back and forth which I wanted to do so I could juggle but that was never to be...yet. But now everyone seems to be unicycling so I'd say try to change it up a bit...at least learn how to juggle while riding or try a 6 footer or start a uni polo/frisbee league. cheers

Just discovered this channel whilst looking to also learn to kickflip and ride unicycle (separately of course) Mike, you are a legend! I am loving all this stuff, been making me smile all day :)

i got my unicycle for christmas similar to the comment by Brian McEntire, and spent every free second trying to ride it, and it was a very slow learn, because i had nowhere to practice except my cluttered house. it took me probably two months to learn but once i had a nice open space learning was almost instant. when i saw this video title i was super jealous, because i felt like i was super slow. then i saw the video about how learning is much faster than you actually think, and i thought the idea was really incredible. Mike Boyd, you're really incredible, and watching this makes me realise how insane it really is that people can adapt so quickly.

Hey, I love this video and when I was a beginner unicycle rider this video helped a lot, shortly after learning to ride I discovered mountain unicycling and I was very interested in it and started trying it, I think you should do a video learning how to mountain unicycle and take your unicycle riding to the next level, thanks mike😁.

Love the video Mike, you've earned yourself a subscriber. I would be interested in seeing you learn to clear a 3x3x3 Rubik's cube. There are specific moves that you make to get a square where you want it without upsetting the rest of the cube. Can be difficult, but certainly doable.

+Mike Boyd I don't think a rubiks cube would be a good one. Unlike riding a unicycle and learning to kick flip, it'd take an extremely long time to learn to complete it without any help.

I just got given a uni today. I had one as a child, but never learned how to ride it. I have begun exploring Clowning as an outlet for my intuitive creativity. I am inspired by your determination & perseverance. I am going to try swearing less as I learn, but may have to come up with a silly nonsense alternative to keep me going thru the initial frustrations of learning a new skill.
