Are you tired of running material test grids and want to make something real with your laser but don't know what to make? Try creating puzzles to dial in your engravings and cut settings! These puzzles can be great coffee table conversation pieces or simple gifts for friends and family. We'll go over how to set up your artwork in Lightburn and use an online puzzle creator to create the custom puzzle artwork that's ready to be used as a vector file for cutting the puzzle pieces. We'll even create a tray that can be customized to hold the puzzle when it's complete.

You can probably save some material by also cutting out that tray lip the same time as the puzzle pieces. Also inserting the puzzle pieces by sliding them off the paper into the tray may help out as well. Great video, fantastic idea. My wife loves puzzles so this is definitely on my list!

Yep adding the outer frame to the original puzzle would save on some waste material. Have fun with making some puzzles for your wife!

@@Vintauri I feel like you've made a mistake, tiger was messed up since you've cut rather than engraving... It would've been better if you engrave the tiger and cut only the puzzle line... Great video 👍

@@adalemao2146 I'm not sure what you mean. The tiger was engraved, and then the puzzle pieces were cut.

When cutting the border and the puzzle at once you can spare some material. But I like the idea; compliments for putting so much information in a relatively short video. Question; is it possible to stick a photo on the wood? I expect you need air assist. Should it be beter to place the picture on the bottom, so the picture will have less burning? Or does the air assist doesn’t work any more? As you can see: Your video inspired me; I’m already thinking how to make a puzzle which is a lot bigger then the laser can cut in one go!
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 2 года назад
You are correct that you can save some material by cutting the border with the puzzle. It was an afterthought on my part to not do both at the same time. You can engrave a photo into wood. You’ll have to play with the image processing to get it to look decent. Air assist generally will make engravings look a bit smeared so I would leave it off during that but turn it on during the cutting operation. As for putting an actual photograph onto the wood and cutting, that would require some investigation to the photographic paper. It often contains silver and other chemicals that might not do well or could be hazardous to cut. A happy medium might be to printout the photo on regular paper, laminate that to the wood with some light glue and then cut it out. That could be an interesting experiment to see if you can cut the paper and wood without excessive charting. It might be something I have to try.

Why does my speed say.. Speed (mm/sec) and your says Speed (mm/min)? How do I change mine?
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Год назад
Lightburn defaults to mm/sec, which is the typical speed for Co2 lasers. You can change this by going to the edit menu and the settings option. You can choose mm/sec, mm/min, or even in/sec or in/min.

No, those gaps in your frame were generated by light burn. Double click on that layer and clear the Tabs / Bridges button. If you did a preview you would have seen the gaps. Why LightBurn defaults tabs on waisted many hours of mine . But other wise allot of good information that I'll be using. Thank you
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Год назад
Those were not tabs from lightburn as I only use those on if I'm creating a kit to sell and want them to stay in the sheet. They would also be more spread out around the entire cut. Tabs should not be turned on by default, I've always had to purposefully activate it on any of my installs.

@@Vintauri Check your version. Version 1.3.01 does do this it also allow me to adjust tab size amount and power.

Do you think lightburn software will support my laser??? Its CO2 6045
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 2 месяца назад
I would need more information on your specific laser to know if lightburn is compatible with it. I would need either a GRBL controller or a DSP/Ruida controller to use lightburn.

Did you add kerf to any of the layers of the puzzle pieces?
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Год назад
I did not add any kerf to the puzzle parts. To get them to fit more exactly, you would have to cut them all separately. As is with the diode laser they are a little loose but not so much that you cannot keep the pieces together.

Looking at buying a laser for the workshop what would you buy ? I am just a garage set up at home and looking at making a few things for the wife for the car boot sales here in Scotland UK just subscribed to your channel and will be watching more videos. looking not for the best price but the most reliable and repeatable Diode 20 watt laser what would you recommend, I have experience with CNC routing as we have one in the shop and also cnc lathe, just think this would add another dimension to the shop
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Год назад
True 20w output diode lasers are fairly new this year and I've only had my hands on a couple of them. The Atomstack A20 pro and the Xtool 20w upgrade module for the original D1. I've worked with more 10w lasers from more manufacturers. Based on that, when looing for reliability and repeatability, I'd look at any of the three from Xtool, Sculpfun or Atomstack. If Ortur comes out with a 20w that would quickly rise to the top of the list as well. Each of them will have their quirks. Some of them have safety sensors that can trip things up, others have hardware that needs to be checked for coming loose. Most of them have decent support, however the online communities on RU-vid, Facebook and others are where you will find the most support. Any one of them would be a great addition to a workshop and your experience using the CNC router will help in learning the laser.

@Vintauri

You sure can use a photo engraving instead of vector art. It takes more practice to get the photo engraving done well but once you have those settings you can engrave it on wood and then cut out the puzzle pattern.
