These aren’t consonant clusters. They are called digraphs/trigraphs. Digraphs / trigraphs are 2 or 3 letters that represent a single sound, while consonant clusters actually are multiple consonant sounds. Ch/th/ng etc still are single consonants sounds so they aren’t clusters. In Vietnamese only the consonant /w/ can form clusters with other letters like in Hoa, Khoe, or Thuê
I notice that you pronounce the cluster gi as zi. I thought that this cluster was pronounced yi ( using the English sound for y) in the South and zi in the North. Is the cluster gi pronounced zi in both the north and south of Vietnam. I like you simple and concise lessons. Please continuing offering them.
3:09 how come "gi" is pronounced as "zuh"? Isnt it supposed to be "gee" with G sound and not J? G (Guh)+ i (e) = Gee Also I thought southern pronounce it as "yuh" or vietnamese "d"
Xin chào ! I've a question. 2:13 You explain that "qu" is like "w" in english and we don't have to prononce the "q". But I've ever heard (because sometimes, I look at vietnames videos) the inverse. (They prononced the "q") Is it because the southern accent ? Or are they some exceptions ? Thank's for your time ! I follow your channel (sorry if my english is not correct, I don't speak this language correctly)
Hi, I’m Vietnamese. If ‘q’ appears in a word, it always have ‘u’ followed, never ‘q’ alone. ‘Q’ can be used in acronym though. ‘qu’ is definitely pronounced as ‘w’. The pronounciation of ‘q’ is not important because it it never used. But in general, it also gives the impression of the ‘w’ sound.
Cam on chi nhieu. Could you suggest us podcasts in easy vietnamese to listen to or youtube channels with very easy movies in vietnamese ? Or something like that ? Cam on chi nhieu. Toi la nguoi Phap.
Alice, many Vietnamese movies are on Netflix now with English subtitles that you could watch and practice listening from there. I haven’t looked much into podcasts so I don’t know any source to recommend for now.
