Keep in mind that Jo-Ann is a RETAIL store, so they are paid to CUT your fabric and ring you out. The employees hired there are there to make money and survive, not all of them sew for a living. Jo-Ann is also a fabric AND craft store, so some may be knitters, painters, or jewelry makers. If you REALLY want a one on one lesson, then you need to go to a mom and pop quilt shop where they are in the business because they love sewing. Granted, some employees love sewing, but don't expect them to explain how to do your whole project, they are NOT paid to do your project, know the exact amount of fabric for your dining room chairs you didn't measure, and look at you and instantly know how much fabric you need to make a dress.

mick I work here and I can’t tell you how accurate and truthful this is! I wish everyone who shopped there would understand this!

True to some extent however if clerk can't even measure and cut fabric and thats their job. Shame on joanns for not giving them proper trainng or placing them in wrong section of store. This a actually happened to me. I felt sorry for the young girl, and took the time to instruct her.

The Jo-Ann where I live is a big store. I love it because It has a huge quilting fabric area, because I guess a lot of People here are really into quilting. The apparel fabric is really expensive. If you shop at the less expensive clothing stores out of necessity, than you probably wouldn't save any money making your own clothes, like it used to be. You would be making something to wear, simply because you love sewing.

I am lucky that my local store seems to have quite a few knowledgeable employees, and they've helped me out quite a few times! I am a total newbie to sewing...this video was very helpful! I've definitely made some bad fabric decisions! :)

This would be fine if Joann ' had all the choices here. Our local one is about a quarter size with few fabric choices, and you can't fabric shop online

Vini Girl by "test" she means stretch it like she does in the video
@barbaramobley8845

Also besides deciding if it stretch or woven to look at the bolt info such as care instructions, width, etc to see if it meets your fabric requirements.

If only the Joann staff was trained in fabric types and uses. No one ever has a clue of what I am talking about.

So true. I've had same problem.
@barbaramobley8845
@barbaramobley8845 5 лет назад
Well I just think they shud have some training in the types of fabrics. Of course, I realize that are there to earn money and not all of them are sewists. But like I said a little training in types of fabrics wud go a long way.

I wish I had a Jo-Ann this huge near me! Curious, during the intro when Micah was standing beside the three dressforms, what is the pattern used for the grey jersey dress right beside her? It's perfect for some fabric I have.

I want to make a casual summer dress (peter pan collared style dress) and I bought some Prima Homespun fabric. But it isn't stretchy at all, and quite crisp. In this video, you said you intentionally chose not to pick the woven fabric because it wasn't stretchy. Did I make a bad choice? Please help, thank you!

You could use cotton but you have to make sure your pattern includes some kind of closure, like an invisible zipper for the back or a button-up front. The back of your pattern should include suggested fabric types and a section for notions, which would tell you whether or not a zipper is included.

Wish your employees knew more about sewing. It's so disappointing to ask a technical or fabric question and not have them know or be able to offer any help. So sad, because your store in Flagstaff, Arizona is the only fabric store near my town.

This vid is kinda repetitive But it's ok Also, what fabrics are best to use to make a skirt? (Circle and maxi skirts)
@BwooHuraca
@BwooHuraca 7 лет назад
That would depend on how you want it to drape and perform. You could use anything from a light to heavyweight, knit or woven. I would suggest looking for a pattern with a photo you like then look on the back for suggested fabric types. If you're a beginner sewer it's always best to start with something that doesn't stretch, slip or shift, so a cotton or cotton/poly blend would be the easiest.

I was recently shopping for a light weight denim or a chambray. Joann had some really attractive options but at $24/yd--NO WAY! Went to Hobby Lobby and found a beautiful chambray with white flowers, just what I had in mind. $8.99/yd plus 30% off!
