Thanks for this awesome video, Andrea. A duolingual (or bilingual?) relationship sounds so romantic :) But I think it would be very difficult to change our relationship language. But maybe we should try!!

Yes, it's so hard to change once you are used to speaking in a certain language. Maybe you can set specific times when you do it with a clear start and end and then switch back to "normal" when "life happens".

I very much enjoy your content. My husband is from Morocco and as such his native language is Darija (Moroccan Arabic) and he is also fluent in French and English. I only knew English when we were married eleven years ago. Sadly our two kids are 8 &9 and only speak English as that is all we have every used. We want to learn Darija, and I continually ask my husband to do so, but he always ends up falling back to English since we don’t even have a good base. I do understand some of what he says, but I’m definitely still in the “silent stage.” My kids understand very little. Of course Darija is a dialect so there really are t any “language apps,” or programs specific to it which makes it hard to find a reliable resource for learning other than my husband. Any ideas on the best way for us to progress as quickly as possible? TIA

I would say (and Andrea probably would also say) one great way would be to travel with your family to Morocco and stay there for some time, maybe in the summer. Children become much more interested in a language when they hear other children speak it, and when they need to use it to communicate. If that is a possibility for your family it would be a great option!

Thank you! We actually just got back from three months there and the kids did progress but not enough to be meaningful. Honestly, they taught the kids there far more English than they picked up Darija. And, of course, as soon as we got home, we seemed to be right back where we started. At some point we plan to move there, but I’m hoping for us to at least be able to speak some of the language before we do.

You'll have to be patient and realistic. Not everything is possible with every language. Probably in your case, you'll have to pick it up then and there. Moving there would be the best chance to learn your husband's dialect. But don't give up. If your husband is patient enough to speak to you all sometimes in the minority language, that would be great way to start. :0)
