Your videos have been incredibly helpful, and I can't thank you enough for your excellent work. I passed my driving test today with no recorded faults at all. I honestly didn't believe that was possible until my examiner said, "We have now concluded the test, and I'm happy to tell you that you passed with no faults." To everyone here preparing for their driving test, keep learning and endeavour to put what you've learned into practice. Don't doubt yourself. I wish you all a successful outcome. For those of us who are now fully licensed, let's remain safe out there.
All the best for your advanced test. If everyone drove to the standard that you are learning (difference between progress and restraint, correct following distances, always being able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear etc...) we would have no need for the different speed limits.
I passed today!! 🎉🎉🎉 lots of minors, although two were questionable, me and my instructor sorta raised our eyebrows, but it doesn’t matter, I passed, and it’s without a doubt thanks to your videos Richard, instructor also highly encouraged students to watch them for further help
Why are we trusted to use our judgement on these roads but not on others that are arguably easier to drive on? I feel like constantly switching between 20, 30, 40mph limits is less safe since you are focused on constantly monitoring your speedo and looking for speed limit signs rather than on actually driving. Brilliant content, as usual.
Before the NSL was introduced, the sign used to mean 'unrestricted'. For these roads it just meant that nobody had come along and yet set a speed limit, so use your own judgement. This is still the same today, but there is now a blanket national speed limit.
I suppose the better way to phrase it isn't that you're trusted to use your judgement on these roads, rather it's that people can't be trusted with theirs on the other roads, and there are more hazards and greater risk. If you were sensible, you wouldn't drive 60 on those roads, but there are those who would unless there's a speed limit. It's a moot point when people these days have substituted speed limit with speed target. Also if speed limits make you drive less safely, I don't think I'd trust your judgement with none unless you're in Wales.
@@888SpinR I tend to think that people who don't drive safely will do so whether or not there are speed limits - what might them more likely to drive sensibly is draconian penalties if you cause an accident and were over the recommended maximum speed for the road. Nothing is 100% safe and everything is a tradeoff between safety and convenience and getting on with the business of living. Some speed limits are in my view definitely too low. It's time we started treating adults as adults - and let them face the consequences if they don't behave as such.

This is the type of road that scares me the most of driving in Britain as a Swedish tourist. I felt other drivers constantly thought I slowed down too much in the left turns (most stretches and right turns were fine), and I kept having traffic build up behind me because of that. Hate feeling like I'm in the way, but also did not honestly think I could drive faster in those turns and also stop for any pedestrians, bikes, overtaking cars or other things that could show up there. Not to mention doing that while figuring out where the wheels are sitting on the wrong side of the road.

Me again! I've been a PCV driving instructor for just over two months now. I use the jogging & walking method with my pupils in an 11 ton bus, and it's all thanks to you. You're method of teaching is very similar to mine. Even although I'm about 30 years older, You've taught an old dog, new tricks...thanks.
I have a theory that the reason why we have so many drivers who seemingly cannot drive is because they only ever drive at slow speed in residential & urban areas. The other week I drove home from RHS Bridgewater on a circular route via the west of Bolton (Leigh, Westhoughton, Tyldesley, Atherton)... it was depressing, and made me realise that this is driving "life" for many, many people. No fun, no enjoyment, just a daily grind of flat, slow speed pootling about. It was only when I got back around the Belmont area that I was back on proper pukka roads that one needs to "drive". Roads like Colliers Row Road, Scout Road, Belmont Road, Egerton Road, Stones Bank Road, and Greens Arms Road. Those are PROPER country roads that demand RESPECT to driver them properly.
My top tips on driving on country roads.... 1) respect the road you are on. 2) drive within your limits 3) drive to the conditions of the road 4) don't drive like a numpty (there will be enough numpties - usually locals - coming the other way). On narrow and single track roads if you cannot see round a corner SLOW DOWN. Yes, you might need to be doing just 10 miles per hour if the corner is blind in front of you. If you are turning right keep to the left as far as possible, even if that means making a V shape of the corner. If the going gets really narrow and you have to deal with oncoming traffic STOP - be stationary - you cannot hit anything if you are stationary, so if mirrors are clipped it is the other person's fault...!
Honestly mate I’m very proud of myself and of my achievements and of my accomplishments, before I only ever drove in my small local town and I only had 5 hours of driving lessons with a driving instructors in Loughborough, Syston and Leicester on dual carriageways, on Thursday I went on the motorway for the first time alone, I’ve never been on a motorway before with a driving instructor, not to come across as big headed or anything like that but I think that’s pretty good going and I’m extremely proud of myself.
I learnt to drive in a town, and have recently moved to the countryside. Still working on building my confidence on country roads. I wish I had had opportunities to learn this in my lessons, this video is incredibly helpful and much appreciated!
This is a great video, lots of very valuable tips and advice. Another tip, which I don't think came up in the drive, is to consider using the horn on very tight bends. For night driving, flashing the headlights on approach to corners can improve safety. Both the horn and headlights are ways to warn other traffic of your presence, and are perfectly legal.
Amazing demonstration video. However one point to make at the start is the speed limit is 60 because these roads pose no real problem. However statistically this type of road is the most dangerous for fatal crashes. I drive on these roads infrequently as a city dweller and whenever i do it is with clenched buttocks throughout!
'Go at a speed where you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear'. No - not on narrow country lanes! You have to take into account vehicles approaching too which could be hidden by bend or brow of a hill. Also have to account for the majority of drivers who are id!ots that do not take this into account and barrel through bends at way too fast a speed! You have to be able to stop in at least half the distance you see to be clear when approaching bends or brows of hills on single track or narrow lanes.

I still remember my driving lessons, and I can tell you that it's very difficult to drive when you keep talking without breaks. You increase cognitive load with constant information inflow. My driving instructor didn't say almost anything so I had to watch your videos to learn what are "best practices". The perfect is somewhere in the middle. P.S. Thank you for the best available explanations of every driving aspect!
Everyone is different when it comes to how much input to give. This is the job of the driving instructor to judge and make sure the pupil isn't overloaded by the road conditions or the verbal input.
Honestly, if people drove/rode at appropriate speeds for the road, visibility, weather, vehicle, visible and potential hazards, etc., then we wouldn't need speed limits. However, I think the practice of reducing speed limits has actually had the effect of making some (should that be many?) people believe that the posted limit is a safe speed for that road, regardless of anything else. So, for them, it becomes more of a target than a limit. There may be plenty of places on the road where higher speeds would be safe (but not legal) at times, but other places and times where a lower speed is required. I've seen/heard people complaining about a speed limit, saying something like, "It's not safe to go around that bend at half that speed, so why is the limit so high?", or, "I was going less than the limit but ...", as if they expect the limit to tell them how fast to go, instead of their judgement.
I understand what you're saying, this is why the national speed limit on a narrow road can seem peculiar. However, it's a generous limit and a level of freedom, not a target.
Exactly, it's a limit, not a target, but there seem to be a lot of people these days that don't understand that (not just for national speed limits but for other speed limits too - it's often not safe to do 30 in a built up area, for example, narrow roads, parked cars, pedestrians, children playing, ...), and I can't help wondering if the trend of lowering speed limits on so many roads has actually helped increase that attitude. Sort of, "if I needed to go slower, they'd have posted a lower limit". Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of drivers without the skills to assess potential hazards and make appropriate driving plans to adapt their driving to the conditions. Keep up the good work with the driving education.
It does depend on the road. The vast majority of the motorway network is comfortably traversable at 70, because that's what it was designed to accommodate. Some tighter bends might suggest a lower safe speed, and if conditions are particularly hazardous, then continuing to drive at 70 is moronic.
Lovely explanation of Speed Limits (not targets) and well done to your pupil too. I shall be sending this video to my mum to help her understand why you don't drive at 20mph nor 60mph on certain country (national speed limit) roads.
Thanks for this video, living out in the countryside most of my actual driving are on these roads but all my instruction has been on town driving. So helpful to see how much to speed up/slow down in these situations.
I have just passed the test in Iceland with just 2 minors (max is 11) obviously some traffic rules are slightly different but your videos helped a lot, thanks

Had my first ever driving test last Friday and failed with a major for driving too close to a parked car and almost hitting their mirror (worst part is I didn't even notice at the time) despite having an overall decent drive LOL Even more nervous for my second test now that I know just how easy it is to fail on one mistake !
Many people do see it as a target though sadly and this causes issues like mentioned about idiots causing a slower speed limit enforcement. I think there’s a massive geriatric population on the road though who are the complete opposite. They are people who should be watching these videos, but that’s another problem! Great videos as always. I passed in 2005. I watch these videos still because it’s important to give a sh-- on the road. I’m not 17 anymore, I know fully well I’m mortal and seeing the consequences of RTAs is shielded from everyone except from emergency services except those who have to pick up the pieces.
The reason for the full road-width give way line is simply that it would be too short (minimum length per Traffic Signs Manual, ch. 3, s. 3.2.3 is 2.75m) if it only ran up to the midpoint. The rationale may involve the dangers of the narrow junction mouth, but also the shorter line is much easier to miss, and wears down much quicker.
A brilliant video again, Richard!👏🏻 I thought your tip "if youre not breaking for the bends, you're not making the most of the speed on the straights" was particularly helpful 👍🏻 I was just wondering, what's your view on using a short beep of the horn in situations like 38:27 where the visibility is particularly poor, to help "warn other road users of your presence" (HC rule 112), in addition to going SUPER slow?
I prefer not to use the horn as it would be a nuisance to anyone living in the area for a horn to go off everytime someone gets to the junction or blind bend. But if you feel you need someone to hear you then you can use it.
Started my lessons Wednesday just there stalled a few times but did good and bad on gettin tje csr moving but once the csr was moving i was fine with changing gears mayne pressing the gas bit to early but i can improve on these things
Thank you for your videos. I passed the test yesterday with 1 minor fault. I did the test in Kendal, missed a few turns and ended up leading the examiner to very narrow countryside road as I am not local. I couldn’t get to 60 mph on those road but I just did what I thought was right. No way we can drive at 60 mph on those narrow road.

Hi Richard, i have a question. I went out driving yesterday with my dad- i'm currently learning, we came across a newly paved road in which the max speed was 20 due to the risk of debris hitting us (chipped stones), on the test would I need to go 20 or go the normal speed limit which was 30 at the time?
It depends if there are still many loose chippings and if you think the advisory speed limit is still relevant. Going above the advisory speed limit in itself is not illegal and would only be marked on test if the examiner felt your speed was too high.

21:30 - A good tip I find in this situation if is to open both front windows and listen to hear if any traffic is approaching. Mindful though of quieter vehicles such as electric cars (which still make a lot of noise due to their enormous weigh grinding into the road surface) and push bikes. Just gives an added reduction in risk before starting to nudge out. Don't try this though if you are deaf 🤣
27:30 I feel like this was a slightly confusing way of explaining the concept. Perhaps starting with idea of maximum available grip and working downwards from there would make it easier to understand. (With a brief mention about the effects of weight transfer as well.)

Another to add is blip the gas pedal just when start to steering the wheel getting in the bend "I said blip" no accelerate. and check the limit point is static, is it approaching or moving away. I saw so many drivers braking inside of the bend. all is about balance the car in bends. "It is about safe driving we are not talking about racing that is another topic". Good Video

There are many factors that influence the sound of an engine - for example the number of cylinders and if it's turbo charged. But identical cars sound the same to me.
It's a limit, not a target. You should be traveling at an appropriate speed for the road and hazards, not at 60, except where that is appropriate. Stay safe. 👍
@@blumperjoe8920 60 isn't insane, and it's often perfectly safe on straight(ish) sections where there aren't junctions/driveways (or there's good visibility of the road leading to the junction and there's nothing there) and you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear, or in half the distance if it isn't wide enough for 2 vehicles. Maintain good observations and slow to appropriate speeds and select an appropriate gear for hazards (bends, vehicles/people/animals/objects, poor road surface, water, etc.), then pick the speed up again when the conditions allow. Sure, sometimes you need to be going slower than 60, sometimes significantly so (I had to slow to 10 for a very tight left-hander with very little visibility the other day), and sometimes you'll need to come to a stop, but you can also travel at up to 60mph to make progress when conditions allow.
Update about my country road journey in Hampshire: I went 45-ish mph (max) on the 60 mph sections. Went back home in one piece. It makes absolute sense of not thinking 60 mph is the target. There were several occasions when passing cars on opposite lanes, speed was like 30 mph only. So yeah, just do whatever is sensible and safe. Slowing down when approaching tight bends is essential.
Occasionally I get a pupil who finds it easier to do it the way Sarah is doing it. If they do it this way and they can control the car well then I let them get on with it.
I would love to go for a drive with you on country roads. I'm confident in terms of speed and turning and I think I'm safe, but I'd like some feedback anyway.
@Conquer Driving - Hi, is it bad to watch you now considering I haven't had an instructor yet so I have an idea of how you teach and now have that preference but other instructors don't have that structured way of teaching and do complex roundabouts on lesson two.
could you tell me whether it is taught to put right hand Indicator on ( always) when going round roundabout ... people do this upon the road here , even when taking the 1ST exit
@@ConquerDriving well from this it would appear MOST people are not driving properly , ie They are just stuff the right indicator on regardless they do not even signal to turn off the roundabout I was just curious what was taught these days . ( passed , 3rd attempt haha - 1987 ish )
The rules are extremely clear on (normal) roundabouts. People are just idiots. People still indicating right as they leave is annoying, but not especially unsafe. Better than the ones indicating left but remaining on the roundabout - that causes accidents.
Question at 0:07. Question: Do you know what the speed limit is on roads without sign and no street lamps? The answer is NOT 60 mph as was incorrectly stated. It is NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT.
Maybe I am mistaken. National speed limit on single carriage way is indeed 60 mph. So I guess it would be the same (or even lower) on these single lane roads
@@iamjimfan it depends. There were some assumptions in that Q&A at the start (they were assuming car and single carriageway). For cars and motorcycles, national speed limit on a single carriageway is 60mph, however, if you are towing a caravan or trailer, or driving a motorhome exceeding 3.05 tonnes, driving a bus, coach, lorry, etc., then it's 50mph. For dual carriageways and motorways, it's 70mph or 60mph depending on the vehicle. If you are in Scotland and drivinga goods vehicle exceeding 7.5 tones maximum laden weight, then the limits are 40, 50 and 60mph for single, dual and motorway respectively.
I didn't feel it was necessary at this stage to go through all the speed limits for the different vehicle classes and dual carriageways which we will get to later. Usually I bring up the different speed limits for the different vehicle types when I'm explaining the difference between dual carriageways and motorways.

Do you reckon if you drove these roads like you were on an advanced driving test (being a bit more extreme with your position and acceleration etc) on your L test it might actually fail you?

02:45 - well that was an utterly pointless manoeuvre when you factor in A. they were in your view the whole time, and B. they turned off about 30 seconds up the road. Some people...
Note they also indicated to come back across, which would be bad enough, as it's unnecessary after completing an overtaking manoeuvre (what else would anyone expect you to do? Stay on the wrong side of the road?), but they also did so on approach to a left-hand junction. Dreadful driving all-round.
