New Year Resolution videos are some of my favourite things to watch on RU-vid, but you usually only get to hear people talk about this stuff before and after the fact! This part-way-through update was amaaaaazing! I am looking forward to your halfway video too. I love this open discussion of goals, checking in, giving yourself a kick in the butt where needed, and making adjustments where you have to. This is how goals get accomplisheedddd!! (Also I am in love with your editing these daysss)
Thank you brønk!!1!!!!1 Agreed, it's always nice to see people making progress (or being honest about not making progress) about their goals. I see the polyglot community on YT moving towards a lot of clickbait videos and I wanna make sure we still make content that's being really honest about our processes to make it transparent and accessible for everyone. (ALSO THANKS I am enjoying exploring new editing styles!!)
I am Chinese and can speak fluent English and German. I am studying Japanese and Korean now... Really admire your enthusiasm in languages! Keep progressing together!
@@diogosouza575 There are so many sources out there to study German though... Right now I'm reading a book in German it's pretty hard but you learn all kinds of idioms and other stuff. I would recommend this site to you bs.to/ to learn german. This site has hundreds of series you can watch. They have shows dubbed in German or shows with German subtitles. They even have Anime with German subtitles which I also use. I'd recommend to watch a show you've already watched before but dubbed in German or with German subtitles because you're already familiar with the dialogue it will be easier to understand.
I love how honest, realistic thorough you are!! I think people forget that goals are there as motivation, and not something to feel bad about if you have to move or change them depending on your situation and time! You've been absolutely killing it, ADD OIL
People like you inspired me to start my own channel on language learning as well! I'm learning Korean, French, German and Yoruba rn but can I just say that, having watched so many of your videos, you're such a great role model for me! Like, your motivation, consistency and ability is actually one in a million. Keep doing what you're doing, I love your channel!
From your talk I understand that being passionate is the key to set and achieve language goal. Thank you so much for making such videos and keeping me motivated. ❤️
I have such a soft spot for goal setting and updating videos. I loved getting to hear what you've been working on! Also completely unrelated... but I absolutely adore your handwriting (in all the languages)
Since your 12 language goal video I am very happy to say my Japanese improved a lot. It’s really fulfilling to see how far you’ve come. Just a week ago I thought my progress was trash, but after going throw my Japanese notebook where I was learning the kana it started to hit me how much I’ve learnt. It might not seem much but at the time thinking of making my own sentence was such a dream! I’m really grateful and happy and it’s giving me so much motivation. Keep going guys you can do ittt💪🏻 and please don’t be hard on yourself, the journey is never or rarely perfect but always always beautiful
awesome update! I'm really looking foward to see your improvement in spanish, I'm from Mexico 🤘🏼 I believe that at least for the rest of the year things will get rough here(COVID), so I think its best to postpone your trip like you said. I started learning english since kindergarden and I'm really proud of the level I have achieved. Love your videos! keep up with the good content, and let's crush those 2020 goals!
Love this. I am currently at level B1 in Korean and I want to reach B2 by the end of the year. I joined a language school but we had to shut down last month. We are now moving to zoom after a month of not meeting so I have to refocus. I did join a weekend Korean meetup online. 🥰 For Spanish I am consistently studying on iTalki for 2 hours a week. I have a lot of vocabulary and grammar to learn. I have barely touched Bulgarian this year. It is such a beautiful language so I need to try again.
This video is very inspiring! You sound like you’re achieving a lot and happy for your progress. Since this is language goals I’ll type my goals too and come back here later. I’m around intermediate in Japanese and just finished my college semester so I have 4 months off. My goals for the summer is to raise my Arabic and French to B1 level. Right now I can have decent conversations in French but speaking not good so plan to call. My Arabic I can have short conversations but I want to explain myself and talk about life. So I’ll practice speaking with my arab friends online :) and make lots of calls. Thanks for the video and your methods are very effective
Awesome! that language-goal vid was the thing sparked my interest in language learning and motivated me to start learning Mandarin, so it's really cool to see the update on that! Good luck with your goals and life in general XD
I noticed that the goals that had a level attached to it (A1 B1) were not achieved. The same has happened to me. But, when you set something more specific, such as a conversation on a particular topic or talking to a particular person, those seemed to be more achievable
that Indonesian dude "but your skin is white" hahahahahhaha I'm dying, literally my life when I say my background is north african but I grew up in Brazil. I always get that "you're so pale though"
Declan, I don't have to imagine it :) I have seen it happen many times. "Where do you come from?" "Manchester" "But where do you come from originally?" In 2020 some people can't seem to understand that non-white people can have spent their whole life in a European country...
The fact that you can listen to language content while working on your design stuff... A goal I never thought of but maybe that's one little bonus I can think about as I try to transition from engineer to designer. ☺️
I love when you put all those language together When you learn them and show your progress and updates and how it going on, I like your honest when you tell ther is some of them maybe can't talk it of the end of this year, you really work hard to manage them, I hope i can do the same without losing my focus or feel I'm under pressure Thanks for sharing your experience it's inspired 💕
Hi Lindie, great to hear an update! What I'd like to know is how you do all this study whilst also working. Have you already done a video on that? I would just love to hear your daily routine and whatnot. Have a great day! xoxo
I really like what you said about the goals. At the beginning of the year I finally got my Genki books for beginner Japanese and I was craaazy excited about them. But because of numerous reasons I couldn't focus on it like I want too. I was feeling like a failure (dramatic much maybe?) and then the pandemic came and everything went south. And parallel to that, I'm doing a course trough the company I work with, working full time... But finally I realized, the goals I set myself could change, and that is ok! They are for myself and myself only, I am not being paid to learn that and I have my whole life to learn. I am really interested in languages in general, if I had more time I would study a lot more, it fascinates me! Cheers from a Brazilian living in New Zealand.
Aw don't give up on your Hungarian goal. It's not that hard! For me I'm in the middle of learning Korean. Still at a very modest level but Japanese is accomplished with N1.
You are doing amazing no matter what, a great inspiration for most of us :) also the video quality, colour and everything in this video is superb! The natural light and window :O tepak!
You represent the kind of person I wanna be! Although I have another set of languages I adore: Gaeilge (love at first sight), Deutsch, Suomi, Français, Español, Italiano, Yorùbá, Korean, Chinese, more of English I need to set my goals properly by your example, thank for the video!
Love the hair colour Lindie! Just started to learn tagalog 2 days ago after learning Japanese 6 years ago at Uni. Tagalog has few textbooks, no official proficientcy test etc (it has enough though). maybe a video of how to learn languages that are rare or with less resources may be useful :)
Thank you so much to show us that program that you use to refresh your Arabic. It is really useful and funny. Nagyon szépen köszönöm, hogy megmutattad nekünk a programot, amit arra használsz, hogy felfrissítsd az arab tudásod. Igazán hasznos és vicces! :)
love it! I am planning on taking n3 and also I am learning basic german alongside. It may be counter intuitive but I find that learning two languages is so effective. When I am done with one, I can take a rest from it and then go on learning the other one. Languages are awesome!
What a coincidence! I watched that video again last night and was wondering how you were progressing given the global situation. Happy you're doing well ☺️
You're such a big inspiration, Lindie. The only languages I would say I know to some extent are spanish (my mother tongue) and english (been learning it on and off since I was 6, and recently been given the C2 certificate). 1 and 1/2 month ago, I decided to pick up japanese and study it properly, and it is quite difficult if I'm honest, haha. I wouldn't be able to keep up with so much work as you do, learning 1 language from scratch is hard enough. じゃあ、がんばって。
Congrats on your progress Lindie! :) You mentioned in your video that you use Tinder to talk to other speakers, Im doing that too haha! I find that talking with native speakers also helps me in my language studies too. I've been using the Passport feature on Tinder (they made it free during the quarantine. yay) to swipe in Spanish countries :D
Thank you for sharing and your progress so far this year. I am sure you can achieve the goal of speaking Indonesian for 30 minutes without the use of English this year. My goal is to B1 to B2 level in Indonesian this year and A2 to B1 level in French Plus reach A1 levels of Japanese, Chinese, Russian and German. Plus to know some basic Korean and Spanish phrases as well.
I've never learned a language before and I just decided to start German. I gave myself 4 years to do it. I'm sure that sounds ridiculous, but I stay confident when I don't feel an exam is around the corner. I want to enjoy the learning process, and I recall material 5x better when I am having fun. Good luck with your language goals or adjustments: Du kannst es schaffen! 👍
Being a Filipino, I've been bilingual since English and Filipino (Tagalog) are our main languages. Because of this, I gained quite an interest in language-learning. My goal in life is to learn at least 10 languages. Currently, I'm learning Japanese and plan to take the JLPT N3 by December. I've learned the basics but I really struggle with pushing forward. I told myself to reach N5 by April but ultimately failed. So, I plan to push myself in May until December. Hopefully, I get to the level I want!
Thank you for making this video, it is encouraging me to keep working hard.I'm trying to improve my levels in 4 languages Korean, Japanese, Mandarin and French. I didn't know about the audio clip app so thank you for telling us about it. Now I have another resource for language learning and audio books etc. I'm rooting for you Lindie, you got this!!!
I don't know if this was mentioned, but I would LOVE to see a video on the podcasts you use to learn some languages! That's an interesting aspect, that I hadn't thought about utilizing before. I would love to know which ones you use
Don't care about people commenting about your goals, because they are just YOUR goals. People saying that you can't do something is just weird. And if you reading this was one of those people, please, stop wasting your time telling others what to or not to do with their goals. Just set your goals too! Just changing topic... I like learning English and Spanish and this year I am going to focus more on the Spanish language. I like watching your videos because you're like a inspiration to me.
Damn you've undertaken on quite the challenge with all those difficult and different languages, very impressive to even attempt it. I'm here thinking it's a bit crazy to start with French whilst I'm already doing Russian and there you are doing 12 at once!
Hi! I'm Filipino and I am really inspired by your videos. I am currently learning Japanese. I am interested in your progress in Tagalog. Prolly we'll know of it in future vids
My language goals have slightly changed as well I had 2 ones, but now I have a few more. Those are: 1) Complete my intensive Italian CD Course and practise my writing to get me to a solid B1 level 2) Complete my 'Talk Portuguese' CD book with exercises, and learn more connectives to help link my sentences (These were 2 goals that I had set myself initially at the start of the year, however, my Italian was starting to have an unwelcome influence on both my Spanish speaking and writing, so I need to be as careful as I can with that one.) 3) Get to A2 level in Polish (A1 will do though) and learn at least 4 cases well 4) Learn to read, write and say all the Kanji (Kunyomi and Onyomi) from the 'Basic Kanji Book' and all vocabulary from 'Minna No Nihongo' textbook.
You are such an inspiration, and you have my admiration for real. I love learning languages, and even though I'm not fluent on French or Japanese (yet) I can say you helped me to improve a lot during the last months. Also, it's wonderful to know you are learning my native language... Spanish. P.S: I'm glad you will come to Mexico! You are very welcome here :). If there is something I can help you with, feel free to ask!
Have flexible goals! I really needed to see this video. Ever since I started my new job, my language (German) studies have dropped to the wayside but now is a good time as ever to pick it up.
Another great video. Thank you. You have such a cute apartment. With the balcony. So sweet. You are doing so good with your languages and as you said, we all can have goals but nothing wrong with not achieving or changing them. We can change our mind every day if we feel like it. And you are great and for sure you don't need to proof anything to anybody. Keep going. I love your videos and find them very motivating. I would love to learn French next. But I am still very busy with Croatian and I am the person who like to concentrate 100% on just one language.
This is amazing and you're amazing! Im Filipino and I'm learning only Korean but its actually so nice to see people learning Tagalog 🥺 its a weird language and honestly I wouldn't know how to teach it. I definitely need to study harder!!!
omg who is this Filipino actor?? HAHAHAHAH is it James Reid? Daniel Padilla? Anyway, I am really happy to find your channel!! I have loved writing systems since I can remember. I remember learning Korean, Japanese (Hiragana only), Arabic and Baybayin when I was in elementary just because I am really interested and passionate about it. But, that was just basic stuff because all I had to do was learn the characters. It never occurred to me that language learning is actually a 'thing'.. I feel more motivated now to dig deeper into the language itself and culture. I want to learn more languages. I didn't even know there are levels in language learning.. I was so confused when you mentioned A1, B1, etc. I am planning to master Korean and Japanese (and maybe, Chinese). I am quite sad to have missed the opportunity of learning Arabic seriously when I studied in Saudi Arabia. But, it is never too late. I will definitely be looking more into this "new world" of language learning. Now that, classes are suspended, my brain has "space" for new knowledge (aside from medical terms 😢😢😢). I am really hoping I at least learn one more language. I just want to say thank you for inspiring me. I am ready to accept this new challenge. I appreciate your content and your videos are really well made. And!!!! you have a lovely personality 🥰 🥰 I recommend you to listen to OPM songs as well.. Maybe, some Ben&Ben, Arthur Nery, and Up Dharma Down. Stay safe ❤️
Hey Lindie, a few questions for you: 1. Do you have any language textbook recommendations geared toward Japanese speakers? Looking to learn either Korean or Chinese after improving my Japanese and just want to plan ahead haha. 2. What camera and microphone do you use for recording? 3. What recommendations for pens and stationery do you like? I like the grid notebook and pens you use a lot.
I can speak Tagalog and English fluently cause I’m from the Philippines now I’m learning Thai so good luck to me HAHAHA I’ll try to study Korean and Japanese after Thai💓💓 I want to become like Lindie hahaha She inspires me to learn
i started to learn russian About four months ago. how is it going for you? you should check out the podcast "comprehensible russian" ist available on spotifiy and it has over 80 episodes (20-30 minutes each) and it helps me a lot to understand russian better.
Astig! Ang galing mo. Kahangahanga. May mga gusto din akong matutunang mga lenggwahe, pero katulad mo, nababago din yung skedyul at saka mgs goals ko depende sa mga nangyayari sa buhay buhay.
This is such a kewl video. I love how relaxed you are within your ambitions. My fave sentence of this vid is probably "goals are only there to act as a motivator". Thank you for the reminder and for sharing your progress! ^_^ Oh and a question, could you share the URL for the Arabic learning program? Very curious to check that out! Veel liefs en zorg goed voor jezelf! x
Vietnamese grammar phrasing is pretty much like Chinese, you could refer to it for easier structuring! Hope this helps! From a Vietnamese girl trying to learn more of Chinese 😊
Hi Lindie! Found your channel last year this is my first time commenting on your video 😊😂 I'm allotting more time and effort to studying Korean, Japanese and Bahasa. I recommend these movies to help you with your tagalog. - four sisters and a wedding - One more chance - General Luna (if you're interested in history cause they used deeper tagalog here) - Hello, love goodbye 😊😊😊
You sound great. I was so happy to hear someone speaking my mother language. Keep going.''
I’ve very excited for ur content in Arabic! I decided today I want to add that language to my list to learn. Haha so I don’t mind if it takes you a year or two to post an Arabic video - it will give me time to catch up 😅
I think it's great to have goals as a motivator, but the whole learn 12 languages or whatever large number goal seems excessive by any standard and it points out to an issue that I have yet (personally speaking) to see be discussed about: the fetishization of quantity over quality in the language learning community. People are free to do whatever they feel is best for them, of course - but I feel like it would be more refreshing to see the language community focus more fewer languages, and get those up to an intermediate or higher level. Not only will it be more realistic to the average person (unless you live on another planet, all of us only have 24 hours in a day), it will also be a good example for hard core language learners to optimize their languages without feeling overloaded. After all, these are languages, not pokemon.
yes! this is the first time i see in this comment section someone talk about this whole quantity over quality thing. i, too, have a desire of learning (to different levels) several other languages, but i prefer focusing on working on increasing my ability of speaking a given language and try to broaden the possibilities of topics i feel comfortable speaking and understanding etc. take note i'm not talking about lindie in this aspect but i've seen videos of some polyglots talking to random strangers and, it sure works when you want to impress like wow give me a language and i'm going to speak to you in it but, it's not so practical in every other day in life lol, a true way of demonstrating ability of speaking a language is having longer-lasting conversations, for example.
Wow! I am following you since a hundred years I guess 😂 and I could see not just progress in your languages journey, but also in your personality. I wonder if you are still an introverted person (infj)? Love you🌸🌸❤❤
Thank you for this progress update!! It's very motivating to see you not idealise your goals and be so honest about them💕💕💕 By the way, how do you know when have you reacher a new level (A1 to A2 or stuff like that)??
I love the honesty. I bought a book for learning Burmese on a whim and despite working through 3 chapters, I only know mingalaba. One of the best language books I ever owned was a book in thai for learning Korean. Sadly I do not remember anything other than anyonghaseo.
Lindie, this video is incredibly motivating and came at the best time! I'm moving on from Spanish and onto starting Japanese, but have been finding it so tough to stay focused on improving every day, so your video is really keeping my accountable. I have a few quick questions - where do you find your language partners in Singapore and is it challenging to improve whilst not having a structured study schedule for each of your languages, since you're doing so many? I don't want to lose my Spanish progress after moving onto Jap, and def have to brush up on my Chinese haha. Thank you for everything! x
I was just sitting around in quarantine practicing my Spanish when I see Lindie posted! My goal was to get from an A2 to a B2 in Spanish this year and I can already see a huge improvement in my comprehension! My other goal is to get from an A0 to an A2 in French this year but I'm not sure if that is going to happen because I haven't been putting in very much time into French at all but who knows we have about 8 more months left of the year. Your videos are so inspiring we will reach our language goals together this year!
I hope someday you pass by Brazilian Portuguese. I really would like to know your thoughts about the language. As you're doing really good with your Spanish, it'll be easy-peasy, even more with such a nice French. ^-^ I love your videos, very inspiring. Keep up the good work. And oh, I'm liking the editing you're doing lately. It's not just your language learning skills that are getting better. :P
I find the audio in Vietnamese a bit awkward. It sounds more like Google Map speaking in our mother tongue. 😂 Besides that, I really love and enjoy your video on the progress update. 🤗 Cố lên chị Lindie!! Em tin chị có thể nói chuyện bằng tiếng Việt trong 30' 😙
