I found your channel via the Czech video, because I just started learning it myself … Realized you dropped the language quickly, but then stayed for the vibes. I’m actively learning five languages, with two on the back burner, one planned, and a few abandoned. Your polyglot aspirational energy is relatable and refreshing! ❤

I already speak French better than English. I learn Spanish, Italian over one month but I can understand a lot even of spoken. Also I learn German. I understand perfectly Polish and Belarusian, and learn Czech (is also easy). I know Russian so I can understand some written Bulgarian because it is based on Bulgarian. I speak Ukrainian as native.

I think early-level Korean is much harder than early-level Chinese for people who speak SVO languages. Chinese grammar is pretty easy to pick up and can seem intuitive for English speakers since there's no verb conjugations and things are generally in a similar order to English. Korean, on the other hand, can seem backwards in terms of sentence structures since the verbs come at the end, and verbs have a bunch of different endings for tense, formality, and a bunch of other things haha. Once you train your brain to "think backwards" in SOV order and process things in a more Korean style, it gets easier as you go. Reading-wise, though, Korean is much easier to me since there's an alphabet and you don't have to constantly learn new characters to advance your level. You can also sound things out and recognize them from having heard them before, whereas in Chinese, you might be familiar with what a word sounds like, but it's still a mystery on the page, which is very frustrating (at least for me) because it feels like I have to learn everything twice :) Also, whenever I take a break from studying Chinese for a while, I feel like I have to re-learn how to read half the characters I know, even though I remember what they sound like, and that doesn't really happen to me in Korean unless I've just completely forgotten the word altogether. As for the TOPIK, I think it's harder for people to study for the test since it's not like "the test covers these words and these structures", which from what I understand is what the HSK and JPLT are more like? (I haven't taken those so idk). It seems like the TOPIK is more of a way of evaluating your Korean level on a scale, rather than a specific set of skills to study for. That's also why there's just TOPIK I and TOPIK II, and 6 levels split between them, instead of individual tests for each level. I actually think this is a more natural way of testing things, but it can be frustrating if your primary goal is taking and passing the test haha. If you want to take the TOPIK in the future, I would just study Korean in general rather than trying to study TOPIK-specific things, and then in the month or two before the test take a few practice tests beforehand to understand the test structure. But it seems like your goal is more general now anyways, which I think is great :)

Okay comments like these remind me why I joined the language community in the first place! And I think you are absolutely right about how I should approach the topik exams. Thank you for explaining it, I really really appreciate it! And thank you for mentioning that you struggled as well in the beginning. I look forward to getting over that first hurdle. That does require me to stop comparing it to Chinese 😂 加油

Korean sentence structure don’t have to backwards, you can can learn it the same way as English. 😊😊😊 so what If others correct you? You can’t please everyone, SPEAK A LANGUAGE HOW YOU LOVE TO. ❤❤❤
@SomedayKorean
@SomedayKorean Год назад
@@kikithedisneyfan5607 I'm not sure exactly what you mean by learning Korean the same way as English, but all I was referring to is that English is SVO and Korean is SOV word order, which can feel "backwards" since they are literally a different order. I wasn't saying one is right and one is wrong, just that they are ordered differently, which can be confusing mentally. I'm not sure if you were implying that people should just speak Korean in an English style or word order? People can obviously do whatever they want, but if your goal is to understand what people are saying to you or have them understand you, that might not be the best strategy 🙂

A random stranger here. If you are trying to decide a major why not choose something that triggers your curiosity? just as you are curious about Chinese or Korean or Spanish? Why choose French now? Life is short, choose something that helps you enjoy the process. Sometimes I ask myself what are Koreans saying about this? What the French press wrote about X, Y, Z? That curiosity is what keeps me consuming their content and learning their languages. Maybe later in life your French spark might light up, however, if that’s not the case right now, why dedicate the major of your Bachelor to that language?
@BecomingaPolyglot
@BecomingaPolyglot Год назад
You know, that is very interesting. I was thinking about that exact same thing. What sparks that interest… is French as a hobby then enough for now? It’s definitely interesting. I am very much looking forward to the conversations I will have with my mentor at uni! Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it!

I can totally imagine! During my Spanish minor I got soooo intrigued by the Spanish language and culture, of course including latin America. It makes my decision very tough... But you are right, Spanish is helpfull! Maybe more so than French.

@@BecomingaPolyglot I meant it like for me it is way more helpful as I like those cultures and thus learning about those cultures in spanish is much more fruitful than with french. If you are much more interested in the francophone world spanish isnt gonna help you much either
@BecomingaPolyglot
@BecomingaPolyglot Год назад
Yes I can imagine! I honestly don’t know yet… I’m interested in both. But my biggest dream is working and living in France so… I have to know some French 😂 but the question is more, can I then do that on my own? Or should I choose it as a major and solely focus on it whilst I’m interested in sooo much more than that. Struggles. At least I like these kind of struggles hahah

French is only 2 hours away from you no? I am so jealous of people living in Europe, they can immerse in the language so easily... My tips for French as a C1 DALF holder is to get the phonetics right :) If not, the 'baguette oui oui how do I pronounce' this gang will come back and get you sooner or later :P

Yea well about 2,5/3 hours yes. I am lucky to live exactly in the middle of holland so within an hour I’m at the border with Belgium! And you are right, I honestly don’t really think about how ‘close’ everything is to me. You have a C1 French?! Wow that’s the dream! Hahaha thank you!
