Learning about Silicone Prosthetics at Weta Workshop

Adam Savage’s Tested

At Weta Workshop, we stop by the mold and cast department, where artists make the prosthetic makeup applications that transform actors into elves, dwarves, and orcs. We meet Kim Docherty, senior prosthetics artist, who explains how a silicone prosthetic like a dwarf's nose is made from start to finish at the shop.

These WETA Workshop Videos are AMAZING! You can really tell how excited the people are to talk about doing what they love, like the passion is so real and I love it!

Same here! Plus I love learning about the behind the scenes incredible amounts of work that goes into these things that I would never think of, such as the recipe book for revisiting movies after moving on, I would have never thought that was a thing but it was really cool to see all the complex looking calculations in the book, the people at WETA seem to be some incredibly passionate people it's awesome!

I agree, they are awesome videos, one of my favourite from Tested in a while. P.S, the workshop is called Weta Workshop, 'Weta' not being an acronym, it's the Maori name for a giant New Zealand Insect. I'm from Tauranga in the bay of plenty, just thought you ought to know :)

Ditto. She's understandable because she articulates her words. Other Kiwis (I'm pointing at certain sporting people here) have the aksint but also mumble, making subtitles advisable.

Silicone is soooooo temperamental. You have to be consciously aware of everything that it comes into contact with. For example: Water based clays are typically a no no for your sculpts if you're using platinum silicone because they often contain sulfur which inhibits the silicone from curing. You can't run latex in a mold and then run silicone in the same mold, because the latex leaves behind residue that makes it so the silicone won't cure. Like she said you also have to be aware of temperature, humidity etc... It's not cheap stuff either, so if you're doing a large piece and it won't cure, well you've just thrown a couple hundred bucks in the garbage. It's a great product though. The results are totally worth the headache.

You do realize people from New Zealand ( kiwis ) have a very similar accent... given the fact they live in close proximity to the Australian continent ( ~900 miles ) I assumed that Kim Docherty ( said Kiwi in this video ) was a kiwi since she works at Weta Workshop wich is situated where ? You guessed it, New Zealand. But I could be wrong, she may an Australian wich moved South to NZ to pursue her career, who knows ?

campbell please listen to her voice when she says words like 'and' 'found' 'quite' 'mass' 'noses' 'lifelike' etc she's clearly lived in nz for a long time as some words are nz, but there's an aussie twang in many/most vowels. As a new zealander you're not very perceptive.

Super interesting to hear more about how this stuff is put together. To those saying she sounds nervous: Yes, but she still did a great job explaining the process and you could really see the passion in her work. If someone was hovering around me with a camera while I explained my job I don't think I'd be nearly as calm and eloquent. :-)

I actually got the feeling they totally fancied each other. Just listen to her voice and watch her eye movements. She's so into the job but as she mentioned later that people don't get what she does... NORMAN DOES :P I think he was loving the fact that she was so into her work, like a total geek, someone he can relate to and I mean that in the best possible way. two people who are obsessive about what they do. Jonathan Gibson The only really bad Tested interviews are the ones where Norm is interviewing a professional PR flack on a trade show floor and they're clearly not interested in answering the detailed questions Norm asks, so him asking makes up most of the video. I'm sure he asked the same kind of questions in this one but since the interviewee was so open and forthcoming they don't find the need to include Norm asking most of the questions.
