Learning Bone Growth 1 - Bone Formation -- Background Concepts was the first video created as we started our quest to demonstrate the growth and development of the human skeleton at a cellular level. Dr. Don Sweet, Dr. Lent Johnson and others at the now-decommissioned Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), had developed an educational approach for understanding the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal disorders through the correlation of clinical, radiological and pathological correlation. The videos share concepts described by Dr. Sweet in memorable lectures at the COA Basic Science Course prior to his passing in 2004, and photomicrographs from the AFIP collection. The Learning Bone Growth Series describes in detail the morphology and relevant cell biology of the 3 types of bone formation in the human skeleton, and introduces briefly the osteoblast (makes bone) and osteoclast (deletes bone).
